Broilerikulttuuri : lihateollisuuden kanat suomenkielisessä proosassa ja sarjakuvassa vuosina 1969–2019
2023
Caitrìona O’Reilly : From ecopoetry to ontopoetics
2022
Caitrìona O'Reilly's poetry is remarkable for its attention to the natural world, to fauna, flora, the four elements and landscapes; for its keen sense of nature's superior and mysterious beauty ("Atlantic", "Octopus", "Six Landscapes", "Bee on Agastache") but also fragility ("Polar", "Iceland"). Without question, it can be described as "ecopoetry". I will explore the fundamentals of O’Reilly’s "eco-conscious" and scholarly work, and show how, in her work, "ecopoetry" amounts to "ontopoetics", which is to be understood as "poetics of being". The natural world captured poetically by Caitrìona O'Reilly is a "perceived" world, i.e. a world seen, observed, felt, touched, heard by a subject. The…
Mega Events and Urban Conflicts in Valencia, Spain: Contesting the New Urban Modernity
2011
The local and regional administrations of Valencia, Spain, have been working to position the city, which is the country's third largest in terms of population, as an international destination for luxury tourism through sports mega-events. Valencia's new image as a “mega-events city” has been criticized by citizens and urban-based movements on social and environmental grounds, resulting in various urban conflicts. The aim of this paper is to examine the causes and dynamics of these conflicts in order to understand the discourse and rationales behind the criticism. This will also include an examination of the ways in which these conflicts were managed by the local administration, especially i…
”Mies kaatuu sinänsä kunniakkaasti” – psykoanalyyttinen luenta miesten terveysoppaista
2018
Reflections of Hope and Anxiety in Audience Responses to Three Environmental Films
2023
This article discusses the results of a reception study of three environmental films with a focus on emotional reactions and the films’ influence on the respondents’ environmental awareness. The short experimental film Valtakunnat/Realms (Finland, 2018) envisions post-human life, and the potential destruction that the planet is being driven towards. To Teach a Bird to Fly (Finland, 2020), a short documentary fiction film about a woman raising critically endangered birds, imagines a future where the effects of climate change have been reversed. The documentary film The Biggest Little Farm (USA, 2018) follows a couple who buy a barren farm with the aim of restoring its biodiversity. Through t…

Professional identity among student teachers of physical education : the role of physicality
2019
In this study, we investigate the role of physicality in the professional identities of physical education (PE) student teachers. Twenty PE student teachers participated in semi-structured interviews during their final teaching practice. Data were analysed using qualitative thematic analysis (Braun and Clarke 2006) and typologies (Patton 2002). The results showed substantial diversity in the student teachers’ conceptions of physicality and the ways these conceptions were embedded in their developing professional identities. The results also brought to light criticism directed at traditional notions of the body and physicality in PE and PE teacher education (PETE). We suggest that conception…
Genetica testuale e traduzione interpretativa: i manoscritti laboratorio virtuale
2012
The tools offered by genetic criticism, which retracing the dynamic process in order to characterize the genesis of texts, are useful tools in the translation process and, particularly, in the stage of understanding the original text. The preliminary documents and manuscripts may offer some alternatives in the investigation of what Nida called "The closest possible equivalent" as shown in the comparison of Raymond Queneau’s manuscripts of Blue Flowers and Italo Calvino’s translation. The contribution of genetics to textual translation, however, does not limit the translator’s freedom. Thanks to genetic analysis, on the contrary, the translator can find the necessary tools to overcome the ob…
A ‘Fortuitous’ Imagination. Josef Frank. Thirteen Fantasy Houses for Dagmar Grill
2017
Between 22 July and 15 August 1947 Josef Frank wrote thirteen letters to Dagmar Grill, cousin of his wife, met in 1914 in Stockholm. The letters contain several hypothesis for an ideal house to be built in Skargarden, an archipelago to the east of Stockholm, where Dagmar Grill lived. Every letter contains sketches and schemes for an imaginary house. The thirteen projects refer to identical functional needs, but differ each other in shape and size. Although they are “fantasy” houses, the sketches refer to a real imaginative exercise rather than to a simple figurative/compositional exercise.
