Exploring or exporting? Qualitative methods in times of globalisation

Europeanism, westernism and methodological imperialism all refer to the classic criticism of Western research in non-Western contexts. Though I welcome the debate, I find arguments based on simple binary oppositions and descriptions problematic. This debate is better positioned as one about the quality of qualitative research. With reference to the criticism I ask if contemporary qualitative research is stuck in old problems. Based on my ethnographic data from East Africa I show that the pitfalls of Western research that are pointed to in classic criticisms are the outcome of old models and poor analytic work. Shortly after giving his talk in autumn 1934 at the International Conference on Physics in London, Huckel sought to introduce the results of his research on unsaturated and aromatic compounds elsewhere in Europe. On April 30, 1935 Huckel delivered a talk in French before the Societe de Physique in Paris. The title he chose was: “Aromatic and unsaturated compounds. Theoretical inquiry into their constitution and properties.”Describing his own efforts as clearly as he could, he also discussed his points of criticism against Pauling’s theoretical and mathematical approach. Aim: The aim of the reserch is to explore the possibility of integrating Sciences and Humanities in the Faculty of Education using Ecocriticism books and literary workshops with didactic activities of interdisciplinary nature.
 Methods: The experience was carried out with 100 students of the Faculty of Education of the University of Valencia from the subjects “Natural Sciences for teachers” and “Literary training for teachers”, where different didactic activities around two literary works, a novel and a short story, were proposed.
