Wetland Restoration with Hydrophytes: A Review
2021
Restoration cases with hydrophytes (those which develop all their vital functions inside the water or very close to the water surface, e.g., flowering) are less abundant compared to those using emergent plants. Here, I synthesize the latest knowledge in wetland restoration based on revegetation with hydrophytes and stress common challenges and potential solutions. The review mainly focusses on natural wetlands but also includes information about naturalized constructed wetlands, which nowadays are being used not only to improve water quality but also to increase biodiversity. Available publications, peer-reviewed and any public domain, from the last 20 years, were reviewed. Several countrie…
The Brand-Land Identity of Etna Volcano Valley Wines: A Policy Delphi Study
2022
This is the first study on the brand–land link for quality wines with a strong identity produced in extreme territories using the Policy Delphi methodology. The objective of this study is to assess the existence of a relationship between the wine brand and the territory of origin for wines produced in the Etna valley in Sicily (southern Italy). Awareness among producers and stakeholders of the recognizability of local wines by the market was investigated. Moreover, the forecasts/reliability, issues/importance, options/feasibility, and goals/desirability of development factors for wines with a brand–land link in the Etna valley were analyzed. The results were used to design a mod…
Freeze dried pomegranate juices of Moroccan fruits: main representative phenolic compounds.
2022
The pomegranate (Punica granatum) is an ancient perennial plant species of the Punicaceae family. Its seeds are consumed as food or as juice. Previous studies have noted that pomegranate juice encompasses many active compounds with beneficial effects. The main goals of this work were to study the phenolic components of freeze-dried and reconstituted pomegranate juices obtained from 13 pomegranate genotypes growing in Morocco. We analyzed several pomegranate juices using high-performance liquid chromatography and high-resolution mass spectrometry to determine phenolic compounds. Twenty-seven bio-phenols, belonging to four different classes (phenolic acids, hydrolyzable tannins, anthocyanins, …
Inside Cover: Hydrogen-Bonded Open-Framework with Pyridyl-Decorated Channels: Straightforward Preparation and Insight into Its Affinity for Acidic Mo…
2017
International audience; A hydrogen-bonded open framework with pores decorated by pyridyl groups was constructed by off-charge-stoichiometry assembly of protonated tetrakis(4-pyridyloxymethyl)methane and [Al(oxalate)(3)](3-), which are the H-bond donor and acceptor of ionic H-bond interactions, respectively. This supramolecular porous architecture (SPA-2) has 1nm-large pores interconnected in 3D with large solvent-accessible void (53%). It demonstrated remarkable affinity for acidic organic molecules in solution, which was investigated by means of various carboxylic acids including larger drug molecules. Competing sorption between acetic acid and its halogenated homologues evidenced good sel…
Effect of Hot Dip Galvanized Steel Surface Chemistry and Morphology on Titanium Hexafluoride Pretreatment
2017
Titanium hexafluoride pretreatments are known to improve paint adhesion and function as a barrier between the coating and the hot dip galvanized (HDG) steel surface. Interactions at the zinc/pretreatment interface are of utmost importance for the formation of pretreatment layers and the corrosion resistance of color coated hot dip galvanized steels. Removal rate of inert aluminum oxide from HDG steel samples by chemical dissolution was studied. XPS measurements showed that the surface Al2O3 layer thickness decreased rapidly already at mild alkaline cleaning, while complete removal of Al required severe etching. Low reactivity of an Al2O3-rich surface was confirmed by impaired formation of a…
Energy crops: the link between education and science
2018
Włączenie do bilansu energetycznego przemysłu rolno - spożywczego paliw biologicznych jako odnawialnych zasobów gromadzenia energii słonecznej jest obecnie jednym z najważniejszych zadań rozwojowych. Jednak korzystanie z energii biomasy jest ograniczone technologicznie, brakiem odpowiedniego sprzętu i specjalistów. W ciągu 10 lat pracy badawczej prowadzono badania teoretyczno - praktyczne poświęcone możliwościom upraw roślin energetycznych. Podstawą badań teoretycznych był znaczący przegląd literatury i materiałów z publikacji naukowych krajowych i zagranicznych, technik przetwarzania i odpowiedniego doradztwa naukowego. Do przeglądu analitycznego literatury wykorzystaliśmy ogólne naukowe m…
Peut-on concilier un faible usage de pesticides, une bonne performance économique et environnementale ? Analyse d’un réseau national de fermes de dém…
2017
Feeding an increasing world population with a sustainable agriculture is one of the greatest challenges of this century. The reduction of the reliance on pesticides is a critical aspect in this quest for sustainability. Whether cropping systems with reduced reliance on pesticides would be able to reconcile the various components of sustainability remains however a matter of debate. Are they as productive and profitable than current mainstream cropping systems? Here the objective is to study the feasibility of a reduced reliance on pesticides in France. We used a unique dataset from a national network of more than thousand arable commercial farms between 2009 and 2011. Launched in the framew…
Analysing the relationship between yields and farmers' incomes to help the design of more sustainable cropping systems
2022
Farmers often grow only the few high-yielding crops in the area, and target maximum yields through high levels of inputs. These practices are based on the assumption of a positive relationship between productivity and profitability over a wide range of cropping systems (Woo et al., 2020; Erythrina et al., 2021). Part of the correlation between productivity and profitability could be related to differences in production situation and therefore yield potential, i.e. characteristics that do not depend on farmers’ decisions. For a given production situation, the systems with the highest profitability and the best environmental sustainability could be systems with moderate yields. The objective …
