GDP Density Disparities in Old Europe: Theil Decomposition in Cross-Country Historical Perspective
2011
The political, social and economic aspects of Old Europe have experienced profound changes over the last century. The levels and variations of GDP provide a good, though partial, representation of these changes with specific reference to the economic development. According to historical data, GDP shows strong increases in Europe; among these countries also Italy. But, what can we say about the cross-country income inequality? In this paper, we analyze cross-country disparities of GDP density from 1870 to 2008 in fourteen western European countries. In particular, we use a Duro-Esteban decomposition of the Theil index to identify the separate contribution of GDP per capita and population den…
A new testing device for the role of the trunk in force production and in balance control in disabled sitting athletes
2017
In cross-country sit-skiing all athletes compete in a sitting position, but some of them have the ability to control their trunk more than others. The trunk plays an essential role in two performance determinants: propulsion generation and balance maintenance. The aim of the study is to design a new testing device assessing athletes’ responses to these propulsion determinants. The new device was composed of a seat surrounded by a sensorized aluminum frame. To assess propulsion generation, two force sensors were mounted in the anterior and posterior side of the frame, while two force sensors were embedded in two ropes elongated from the top of the frame. To measure trunk control, the device …
Fascicle-tendon interaction in v2 skate cross-country skiing : a case study
2015
Venymis-lyhenemis –sykli (SSC) on laajalti tutkittu liha-jänne -kompleksin (MTU) toimintamalli ihmisen liikkumisessa. Jotta SSC toiminta voidaan ymmärtää, lihaksen toiminta tulee mitata ultraäänen (US) avulla. Aiemmin yksi tutkimus on käsitellyt MTU:n toimintaa hiihdon aikana perinteisellä hiihtotavalla (Ishikawa, Sano et al. 2010). Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena on tarjota ainutlaatuinen kokeellinen tulos MTU:n toiminnasta vapaan hiihdon V2- tekniikan aikana, sekä tarjota suosituksia tulevaa tutkimusta varten. Tutkimuksessa yksi kokenut hiihtäjä suoritti protokolla Vuokatin hiihtotunnelissa. Protokolla koostui kahdesta eri mittauskerrasta, joiden välissä suoritettiin 20 km mittainen hiihtok…
Physical performance, heart rate variability and hormone concentrations in cross-country skiers throughout the season
2016
Cross-country skiing is an extremely demanding and versatile competitive sport. Fairly little is known about changes in basal hormonal concentrations and function of the autonomic nervous system throughout the season. Better understanding about these changes as well as their relationship to changes in physical performance and training could be useful for designing better training practices and periodization. This study followed 22 national level cross-country skiers (12 men, 10 women) throughout one competitive season. They were tested at the beginning of the season, during the general preparation season, during the specific preparation season and after the competition season for physical p…
Spatial Localization in Manufacturing: A Cross-Country Analysis
2009
This paper employs a homogenous firms' database to investigate industry localiza- tion in European countries. More specifically, we compare, across industries and countries, the predictions of two of the most popular localization indices, i.e., the Ellison and Glaeser index (Ellison and Glaeser, 1997) and the Duranton and Over- man index (Duranton and Overman, 2005). We find that, independently from the index used, localization is a pervasive phenomenon in all countries studied, but the degree of localization is very uneven across industries in each country. Furthermore, we find that the two indices significantly diverge in predicting the intensity of the forces generating localization with…
Integrated capital shares
2019
In empirical macroeconomics, inter-dependencies between countries are often analysed using cross-country correlations or graphical investigation of time series. This study shows that applying an alternative methodological approach - identification of common unobservable factors and using them as explanatory variables for country-specific time series - indicates a stronger cross-country integration of functional income distributions than the standard methods. The results vary only little between different samples, where both the country and year coverage change. Moreover, the main findings are not sensitive to the way capital depreciation is taken into account. The primary driving factor see…
RENT CREATION AND RENT SHARING: NEW MEASURES AND IMPACTS ON TOTAL FACTOR PRODUCTIVITY
2019
International audience; This analysis proposes new measures of rent creation and rent sharing and assesses their impact on productivity on cross-country-industry panel data. We find first that: (1) anticompetitive product market regulations positively affect rent creation and (2) employment protection legislation boosts hourly wages, particularly for low-skill workers. However, we find no significant impact of this employment legislation on rent sharing, as the hourly wage increases are offset by a negative impact on hours worked. Second, using regulation indicators as instruments, we find that rent creation and rent sharing both have a substantial negative impact on total factor productivi…
Job Satisfaction Determinants of Tertiary Graduates in Europe
2015
Abstract Factors affecting the job satisfaction of tertiary graduates are studied using recent data on 13 European countries from 2010–11. Special attention is given to differences between bachelors and masters. It is found that in many countries, master's degree decreases job satisfaction. Moreover, it never increases the job satisfaction of female employees. Masters are more sensitive than bachelors to career opportunities, variety in work and whether learning is required in the job; while bachelors are more sensitive to the risk of moving to a less interesting job and monetary compensation. Overeducation generally does not affect the job satisfaction of bachelors, but strongly decreases …
Higher education for a better life: Canada in international context
2015
International audience; This study examines the impact of higher education on the wellbeing of Canadians in international context using single- and multi-level models examined separately for women and men. The results indicate that the relationship between higher education and wellbeing differs substantially between countries, with Canada standing out as an unusual case.
A cross-country examination of emotional eating, restrained eating and intuitive eating: Measurement Invariance across eight countries
2020
This study examined the measurement invariance of three scales that assessed emotional eating, restrained eating, and intuitive eating across eight countries (Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Italy, Japan, Spain and the United States) in order to determine their suitability for cross-country body image research. A total of 6272 young adults took part in this study. Participants completed an online survey including the Emotional Eating subscale of the Three Factor Eating Questionnaire-Revised 21, the Restraint subscale of the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire, and the Reliance on Hunger and Satiety Cues subscale of The Intuitive Eating Scale-2. Multi-group confirmatory factor analy…
