eWOM in reward-based crowdfunding platforms: a behavioral approach

2020

[EN] Electronic word of mouth (eWOM) plays a crucial role in influencing purchasing decisions of consumers in situations governed by asymmetric information. In this context, investors in reward-based crowdfunding platforms might modify their purchasing intentions according to recommendations of peers and/or experts. The goal of this paper is to analyze the power of eWOM to shape consumers’ purchasing decisions. We do so by conducting an experiment through Amazon Mechanical Turk (AMT). This online experimental tool allows for an instant access to a large and culturally diverse subject pool, facilitating behavioral research requiring large amounts of subjects. By recreating a reward-based cro…

Fostering university-industry collaborations through university teaching

2019

Unversity-industry links and their impact on innovation processes have been widely acknowledged. However, previous studies have mainly examined university-industry knowledge transfer activities from the perspective of the research and third stream missions. This paper goes a step further, analysing such processes from the perspective of the university’s teaching mission. More specifically, it explores how educational crowdsourcing platforms help bring universities and industry together to develop joint activities in undergraduate and graduate programmes. Nine platforms with different business models were examined. A qualitative exploratory approach was adopted to manually collect and analys…

The Need of Co-utility for Successful Crowdsourcing

2017

Technological development has promoted the rise and use of the collective intelligence through Internet. To efficiently handle this collective intelligence, several processes have naturally emerged. Crowdsourcing is one of them. By using crowdsourcing, the undertaking of a task can be proposed by a person or organization to the crowd that composes Internet. Although these proposed tasks could vary in their requirements for successful accomplishment, any crowdsourcing initiative always includes different benefits for the promoters of the initiatives and one or more rewards for each person of the crowd. These rewards play a key role because their evaluation by the crowd will condition the num…

Governance Considerations for Seeker–Solver Relationships: A Knowledge-Based Perspective in Crowdsourcing for Innovation Contests

2019

The need to solve innovation problems and insource knowledge has led to an increasing number of organizations engaging in crowdsourcing activities and subsequently establishing working relationships with winning solution providers. Using a knowledge‐based view and the problem‐solving perspective, we develop a theoretical framework suggesting how specific innovation problem attributes (i.e. the decomposability, formulation and search space of the problem) influence the governance decision (unilateral vs. bilateral) of seekers to manage the relationship with winning solvers. We empirically analyse the framework using 582 challenges broadcast on the NineSigma crowdsourcing platform. Our result…

Motivation to engage in crowdsourcing: Towards the synthetic psychological–sociological model

2021

Abstract This article is aimed at analysis of user participation in web-based crowdsourcing projects in the digital humanities (DH) field, with a focus on what motivates these volunteers.1 The first aim of the article is a critical analysis of models of motivators for involvement offered to date. The analysis is based on a review of DH crowdsourcing literature, as a result of which there is an indication of shortcomings of the psychological data-driven approach that has dominated thus far. The second aim of the article is to offer a new model that synthesizes the psychological-motivation approach with a sociological one. Applying Pierre Bourdieu’s Theory of Capital, the motivation model cre…

Crowdsourcing: An Application of Promotional Marketing

2015

Groups are more creative than individuals; therefore, they also contain more knowledge, and this assumption represents the central principle of crowdsourcing. The term “crowdsourcing” is a contraction of the words crowd (a large number of people) and outsourcing (the use of external assistance or help). The crowdsourcing concept was popularized and clearly defined in a Wired Magazine article published by the American journalist Jeff Howe in 2006, and since then, it has been implemented in a wide range of industries. Nowadays, with the proliferation of the crowdsourcing practices, it has become necessary to clearly define what crowdsourcing really is and what its specific limits are. So, whi…

Treating the crowd fairly: increasing the solvers’ self-selection in idea innovation contests

2020

Abstract The success of idea crowdsourcing contests depends on the wideness of the number of solvers that voluntarily self-select to solve the problem broadcast by the seeker and previous research has started to highlight the role of fairness in the self-selection process of solvers. This study aims at deepening the understanding concerning how fairness can influence the solvers’ self-selection. By applying a netnographic research design, we identify possible unexplored facets of fairness in the crowdsourcing context, i.e., prize award, award guaranteed, and non-blind contest. Theoretically, we drew from the organizational justice and fairness literature to develop hypotheses about how the …

Enhanced query processing for NoSQL crowdsourcing systems

2014

In this paper, we provide a novel approach for effectively and efficiently support query processing tasks in novel NoSQL crowdsourcing systems. The idea of our method is to exploit the social knowledge available from reviews about products of any kind, freely provided by customers through specialized web sites. We thus define a NoSQL database system for large collections of product reviews, where queries can be expressed in terms of natural language sentences whose answers are modeled as lists of products ranked based on the relevance of reviews w.r.t. the natural language sentences. The best ranked products in the result list can be seen as the best hints for the user based on crowd opinio…
