OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility, reproducibility, and distribution of placental volume measurements according to the crown-rump length between 11 weeks and 13 weeks 6 days. METHODS Images were acquired in 128 pregnancies followed in Burgundy during first-trimester screening sonography using an abdominal 3-dimensional transducer. The placental volume was then calculated by the virtual organ computer-aided analysis method with a rotation angle of 30° by a single operator. The conductance behavior of potassium nitrate in water with and without 1,7,10,16-tetraoxa-4,13-diazacyclooctandecane[2.2] and 4,7,13,16,21,24-hexaoxa-1,10-diazabicyclo-8.8.8-exacosane[2.2.2] macrocyclic ligands have been studied in order to analyze the complexation behavior of potassium cations in water. The absence of the complexation found in the [2.2] system is discussed in terms of the ligand structural features (presence of hydrogen bond donor and acceptor sites). The ion pair association constant of potassium cryptate as obtained from conductance measurements is also reported and discussed.

An investigation of the detection of water stress in non-homogeneous crop canopies such as orchards using high-spatial resolution remote sensing thermal imagery is presented. An airborne campaign was conducted with the Airborne Hyperspectral Scanner (AHS) acquiring imagery in 38 spectral bands in the 0.43–12.5 mm spectral range at 2.5 m spatial resolution. The AHS sensor was flown at 7:30, 9:30 and 12:30 GMT in 25 July 2004 over an olive orchard with three different water-deficit irrigation treatments to study the spatial and diurnal variability of temperature as a function of water stress. Abstract Three new electroactive ligands, 3a, 3b and 3c, that contain the biphenyl frameworks in their structure were prepared. These new ligands presented three interesting characteristics: 1) they exhibited a reversible oxidation, 2) the oxidation induced a conformational change in the crown moiety and 3) they had two different coordination centers, the crown ether and the dimethylamino groups. Electrochemical and spectroscopic studies using alkali, alkali-earth and mercury salts were carried out.
