The relationship between animal cruelty in children and adolescent and interpersonal violence: A systematic review

2019

Abstract The following study is a systematic review of the relationship between animal cruelty and interpersonal violence. The systematic literature review following PRISMA guidelines and combined with the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria, enabled us to locate 32 studies published between 1995 and July 2017. Overall, the results show that episodes of animal cruelty during childhood and adolescence tend to co-occur alongside other forms of violent and antisocial behaviors. Cruelty to animals was associated with bullying, behavioral problems, experiences of abuse (emotional, physical and sexual), and juvenile delinquency. Furthermore, recurrent animal cruelty during childhood a…

Structural Analogies in Annelid Erythrocruorins

1986

Erythrocruorins from many annelid species have been studied by many authors. In spite of the great similarity of most physicochemical properties and of the electron-micrographs of these proteins, some debated experimental data divide the scientific community, e.g. the Mr of the whole molecule (ranging from 2,500 to 4,1000 kDa) and, in consequence, the Mr of the 1/12 molecules, the Mr and number of the smallest covalently bound subunits and the Mr and number of the globin-like monomers (1).

Burrowing behaviour affects Paraergasilus rylovi abundance in Anodonta piscinalis.

2006

Burrowing depth may affect predation rate, feeding ability and reproduction in bivalve clams. We studied the effect of burrowing depth on the abundance of the ergasilid Paraergasilus rylovi in the freshwater bivalve clam Anodonta piscinalis. We transplanted uninfected clams to a lake where they were allowed to choose their preferred burrowing depth, and were exposed naturally to copepodids of the parasite. There was a significant positive correlation between proportionate burrowing depth (PBD) and the abundance of P. rylovi at the end of the 17-day experiment, the deeper-burrowed clams harbouring more P. rylovi. Original PBD (0%, 50%, 100%) did not influence the final PBD or parasite abunda…

Fractional order hereditariness of knee human ligament and tendon

2017

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is one of the four major ligaments in the knee, playing a critical role in stabilizing the joint. ACL is highly susceptible to injury, overall during sport activities, often precipitating catastrophic long-term joint outcomes. The ideal replacement graft for a torn ACL would restore native anatomy and function to the knee. Most commonly used autograft and allograft, including patellar tendon (P) and hamstring tendon (H) graft, or bioengineered synthetic grafts, may substantially alter the biomechanics of the knee, permitting a return to only moderate physical activities [1]. Main issues are the sub-optimal graft properties [2] and a still incomplete biomecha…

2021

Abstract Purpose Consensus about a pre-implant preparation protocol adaptable to any graft used in Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstruction is still lacking. In fact, there is not agreement on reliable metrics that consider both specific graft dimensional characteristics, such as its diameter, and the inherent properties of its constitutive material, i.e. ligaments or tendons. Aim of the present study was to investigate and propose the applied engineering stress as a possible metrics. Methods Preconditioning and pretensioning protocol involved groups of grafts with different section (10 or 32 mm2) and materials (i.e. human patellar and hamstring tendons, and synthetic grafts). A 140 N load…

DNA fluorescence induced by polymethine cation pyrvinium binding

1991

Pyrvinium is a polymethine cation which shows interesting fluorescence emission and DNA binding properties. In diluted aqueous solution, pyrvinium pamoate induced a bright yellow fluorescence in kinetoplast DNA from Trypanosoma cruzi epimastigotes as well as in chicken erythrocyte nuclei under a wide range of excitations. No fading was observed after mounting in suitable media. Spectroscopic studies on pyrvinium solutions revealed bathochromic and hypochromic shifts in the absorption spectrum of its complex with DNA. A striking enhancement of pyrvinium fluorescence was found in solvents of high viscosity or after binding to DNA. Experimental results and the chemical structure of pyrvinium a…

CO2 capture from biogas: Absorbent selection

2013

The development of proper biogas upgrading technology offers a viable means to utilize biogas in conventional power systems. In this paper, various molecular and ionic solvent systems were evaluated for CO2 removal from biogas in a loop reactor system. The performance of amine solutions, ionic liquids and their mixtures, amino acid salts and solutions blended with piperazine was compared in terms of their CO2 loading capacity. The experimental results revealed that addition of small amounts of piperazine can increase on average by 30 vol% the efficiency of above-mentioned solutions. The CO2 capturing capacity achieved for the most promising solvents was in the range of 50–60 L CO2/L absorbe…

Herbicidal potential of aqueous extracts from Melia azedarach L., Artemisia arborescens L., Rhus coriaria L. and Lantana camara L.

2017

In the search for new strategies for weed management in agricultural systems, a great interest is to use the plant extracts to replace or integrate, chemical weed control. Two experiments were done to test the effects of plant water extracts from Chinaberry (Melia azedarach L.), Tree Wormwood (Artemisia arborescens (Vaill.) L.), Sicilian Sumac (Rhus coriaria L.) and Lantana (Lantana camara L.) on seed germination of Rocket (Eruca sativa Mill.), Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.), Bladderflower (Araujia sericifera Brot.) and Psyllium (Plantago psyllium L). The water extracts (pure and 50% mixtures) from the donor species were applied on seeds of recipient plants. In second experiment in pots, thes…

L’incompletezza del patrimonio architettonico: testimonianze in terra cruda a Solunto

2015
