Efficient Power Allocation for Multi-Cell Uplink NOMA Network

2019

Digital technologies are rapidly shaping the modern concepts of urbanization. It is a key element of developing practical smart cities of the future. In fact, they are the catalyst for the increasing networking of all areas of life in a smart city. Recent development in the domain of communication technologies has opened new avenues to realize the concept of smart cities. One of such communication technology is non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) for future cellular communications. This article, therefore, focuses on the interference management of uplink cellular NOMA systems. Specifically, we propose a power optimization technique for NOMA to improve the sum-rate in a multi-cell environm…

Exploiting Data Analytics and Deep Learning Systems to Support Pavement Maintenance Decisions

2021

Road networks are critical infrastructures within any region and it is imperative to maintain their conditions for safe and effective movement of goods and services. Road Management, therefore, plays a key role to ensure consistent efficient operation. However, significant resources are required to perform necessary maintenance activities to achieve and maintain high levels of service. Pavement maintenance can typically be very expensive and decisions are needed concerning planning and prioritizing interventions. Data are key towards enabling adequate maintenance planning but in many instances, there is limited available information especially in small or under-resourced urban road authorit…

Involvement of Lipoxygenase-dependent Production of Fatty Acid Hydroperoxides in the Development of the Hypersensitive Cell Death induced by Cryptoge…

1999

Lipid peroxidation was investigated in relation with the hypersensitive reaction in cryptogein-elicited tobacco leaves. A massive production of free polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) hydroperoxides dependent on a 9-lipoxygenase (LOX) activity was characterized during the development of leaf necrosis. The process occurred after a lag phase of 12 h, was accompanied by the concomitant increase of 9-LOX activity, and preceded by a transient accumulation of LOX transcripts. Free radical-mediated lipid peroxidation represented 10% of the process. Inhibition and activation of the LOX pathway was shown to inhibit or to activate cell death, and evidence was provided that fatty acid hydroperoxides ar…

The fine structure of colleterial glands in two cockroaches and three termites, including a detailed study of Cryptocercus punctulatus (Blattaria, Cr…

2007

1873-5495 (Electronic) Journal Article Research Support, U.S. Gov't, Non-P.H.S.; The colleterial glands of insects are organs associated with the female genital apparatus. In cockroaches, these glands produce secretions that cover two parallel rows of eggs during oviposition, and in oviparous species, these secretions become the tanned, sculpted, rigid outer casing of the ootheca. The goal of this study was to compare the gross anatomy of the colleterial glands and the ultrastructure of their component tubules in the phylogenetically significant genera Cryptocercus (Blattaria) and Mastotermes (Isoptera). Recent studies indicate that cockroaches in the genus Cryptocercus are the sister group…

Effect on Orange Juice of Batch Pasteurization in an Improved Pilot-Scale Microwave Oven

2010

The effects on orange juice batch pasteurization in an improved pilot-scale microwave (MW) oven was evaluated by monitoring pectin methyl-esterase (PME) activity, color, carotenoid compounds and vitamin C content. Trials were performed on stirred orange juice heated at different temperatures (60, 70, 75, and 85 degrees C) during batch process. MW pilot plant allowed real-time temperature control of samples using proportional integrative derivative (PID) techniques based on the infrared thermography temperature read-out. The inactivation of heat sensitive fraction of PME, that verifies orange juice pasteurization, showed a z-value of 22.1 degrees C. Carotenoid content, responsible for sensor…

Data from: The importance of phytoplankton biomolecule availability for secondary production

2018

The growth and reproduction of animals is affected by their access to resources. In aquatic ecosystems, the availability of essential biomolecules for filter-feeding zooplankton depends greatly on phytoplankton. Here, we analyzed the biochemical composition, i.e., the fatty acid, sterol and amino acid profiles and concentrations as well as protein, carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus content of 17 phytoplankton monocultures representing the seven most abundant phytoplankton classes in boreal and sub-arctic lakes. To examine how the differences in the biochemical composition between phytoplankton classes affect their nutritional quality for consumers, we assessed the performance of Daphnia, on …

Eutrophication reduces the nutritional value of phytoplankton in boreal lakes

2019

Eutrophication (as an increase in total phosphorus [TP]) increases harmful algal blooms and reduces the proportion of high-quality phytoplankton in seston and the content of ω-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA] and docosahexaenoic acid [DHA]) in fish. However, it is not well-known how eutrophication affects the overall nutritional value of phytoplankton. Therefore, we studied the impact of eutrophication on the production (as concentration; μg L−1) and content (μg mg C−1) of amino acids, EPA, DHA, and sterols, i.e., the nutritional value of phytoplankton in 107 boreal lakes. The lakes were categorized in seven TP concentration categories ranging from ultra…

Systematics and phylogeography of the genus Tigriopus (Copepoda, Harpacticoida, Harpacticidae) in the basin of the Mediterranean Sea

2020

2005

This paper reports the investigation carried out on the occurrence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia (oo)cysts in water samples of two municipal treatment plants, and in surface water and ground water wells of the province of Palermo. The wastewater samples taken before and after treatment process were assayed over the course of one year Giardia cysts were detected in all samples throught the year at higher concentration levels than Cryptosporidium oocysts, with a peak observed in spring. The overall removal efficiency of (oo)cysts in the treatment plants was about of 90%. Their presence were also searched in surface waters (three artificial lakes and one river); (oo)cysts were detected in one…

The emergence and development of the cryptocurrency as a sign of global financial markets financialisation

2022

The article presents one of the most important, in the author's opinion, manifestations of further intensification of the processes of financialisation of global financial markets, which was the emergence of decentralized digital currencies (so-called cryptocurrencies) based on blockchain technology. Their creation and existence on the global financial market have been widely considered as one of significant effect of the global financial crisis, which symbolic beginning is September 15, 2008, when one of the largest US investment banks Lehman Brothers collapsed. The worldwide COVID-19 pandemic has only highlighted the importance of this effect of financialization. The purpose of the articl…
