Development of non-equilibrium Green's functions for use with full interaction in complex systems

We present an ongoing development of an existing code for calculating groundstate, steady-state, and transient properties of many-particle systems. The development involves the addition of the full four-index two electron integrals, which allows for the calculation of transport systems, as well as the extension to multi-level electronic systems, such as atomic and molecular systems and other applications. The necessary derivations are shown, along with some preliminary results and a summary of future plans for the code. peerReviewed

Cryptosporidium parvum is a protozoan parasite (Apicomplexa) that causes gastrointestinal disease in animals and humans. Whereas immunocompetent hosts can limit the infection within 1 or 2 weeks, immunocompromised individuals develop a chronic, life-threatening disease. The importance of the adaptive cellular immune response, with CD4+ T-lymphocytes being the major players, has been clearly demonstrated. Calcium signatures and signaling in cytosol and organelles of tobacco cells induced by plant defense elicitors

Calcium signatures induced by two elicitors of plant defense reactions, namely cryptogein and oligogalacturonides, were monitored at the subcellular level, using apoaequorin-transformed Nicotiana tabacum var Xanthi cells, in which the apoaequorin calcium sensor was targeted either to cytosol, mitochondria or chloroplasts. Our study showed that both elicitors induced specific Ca2+ signatures in each compartment, with the most striking difference relying on duration. First report of root and crown rot of sage caused by Phytophthora cryptogea in Italy

Sages are cultivated as aromatic and ornamental plants in Italy and represent the common name of certain species of Salvia and Phlomis (family Lamiaceae). In Sicily (southern Italy) during the summer of 2001, ≈40% of 1,400 2-year-old landscape plants of S. leucantha Cav. (Mexican bush sage or velvet sage) showed symptoms of stunting, chlorosis, and gradual dieback or sudden wilt, which are associated with root and crown rot. Plants were supplied by a commercial nursery, transplanted from pots in the spring, and irrigated using a trickle system.
