Carbon photoassimilation by sharply stratified phototrophic communities at the chemocline of Lake Arcas (Spain)

Three populations of phototrophic microorganisms were found closely stratified in the chemocline of the holomictic Lake Arcas. Cryptomonas spp. reached a maximum population density in microaerobic waters above dense plates of Oscillatoria cf. ornata and Chromatium weissei, whose maxima were found in the deeper sulfide-rich waters. High photoassimilation rates were found during the stratification period at the chemocline (up to 197.63 mg C m−3 h−1), especially at depths at which maximal densities of prokaryotic phototrophs were located, whereas much lower values were observed in the mixed zone of the lake. A Note on Keys and Keystreams of Chacha20 for Multi-key Channels

In this paper we analyze the keystreams generated by the Chacha20 stream cipher. We also compare these to the ones generated by its predecessor, the RC4 stream cipher. Due to the proposed multi-key channels in the upcoming TLS 1.3 standard we analyze the behavior of the keystream in the boundary case where there is a single bit difference between two keys used for the initiation of the stream cipher algorithms. The goal is to check whether a single bit change in the key has any predictable influence on the bits of the keystream output.

Intracellular replication of Cryptosporidium parvum (Apicomplexa) involves the generation of several asexual and sexual forms of the parasite. During the stage conversions, complex mechanisms lead to differential structural and functional properties of the parasite. These require a well tuned gene transcription machinery. For the first time the gene expression of four surface proteins of C. parvum sporozoites, CP15, CP17, P23, and GP900 were analysed in parallel by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. A cDNA library was constructed using total RNA extracted from oocysts and sporozoites of the protozoan parasite Cryptosporidium parvum. The expression library was screened with an anti-C. parvum antiserum and a clone, Cp3.4, with a 2043 bp insert, was extracted. Southern blot analysis demonstrated a single copy gene that was located on a 1.6 Mb chromosome. The gene was found to be C. parvum specific as Cp3.4 did not cross-hybridise with chromosomal DNA from three other apicomplexan parasites. The microstratification of the microbial community at the chemocline of Lake Cadagno and the associated inorganic carbon fixation activity was studied by fine layer sampling. A deep chlorophyll maximum caused by diatoms overlying Cryptomonas was found at the upper edge of the chemocline. A high population density of phototrophic sulphur bacteria, mainly Amoebobacter cf. purpureus, occurred closely below the oxic-anoxic boundary.
