Face-selective adhesion of calcium oxalate dihydrate crystals to renal epithelial cells
1996
The interaction between the most common urinary crystal, calcium oxalate dihydrate (COD) and the surface of monkey renal epithelial cells of the BSC-1 line was investigated. The [100] face of exogenous COD crystals bound selectively and rapidly to the kidney cell surface. Cellular processes extended preferentially over the [100] face initially, and then progressively covered the crystal so that by 24 hours some crystals were observed beneath the plasma membrane. When nucleated from solution onto the surface of the cell monolayer, COD crystals oriented preferentially so that their [100] faces were in direct contact with the cell surface. In contrast, when siliconized glass was used as a subs…
Application of a fuzzy algorithm for pH control in a struvite crystallisation reactor
2006
A struvite crystallisation process is highly dependent on pH. To achieve a high phosphorus recovery as struvite it is important to have an accurate control of pH in the reactor. The high non-linear response of pH value makes manual pH control difficult. Therefore, a software based on fuzzy logic control (FLC) has been developed to maintain the pH at a set value in a stirred reactor to crystallise struvite. The FLC developed has been based on Larsen's inference. In order to confirm the improvement of the pH stability using FLC software, different experiments have been carried out with manual control of the pH value, and with the FLC software. It has been demonstrated that using FLC software …
A phenomenological model for the quantitative interpretation of partial suspension conditions in stirred vessels
2000
Publisher Summary Many important chemical engineering operations involve the suspension of solid particles in a liquid phase inside stirred tanks. Relevant examples include adsorption, crystallization, dissolution, leaching, precipitation, ion exchange and catalytic multiphase processes. This chapter describes a phenomenological model for the quantitative determination of the suspended solids mass fraction in stirred tanks operated at partial suspension conditions. Experimental data on fractional suspension, obtained by the “Pressure Gauge Technique” in vessels stirred by a downward-pumping pitched-blade-turbine, are presented. Furthermore, model predicted trends are compared with experimen…
A pilot-scale study of struvite precipitation in a stirred tank reactor: Conditions influencing the process
2008
Currently, the two most developed techniques for recovering phosphorus from wastewater consist of the formation of calcium phosphates and struvite (MgNH(4)PO(4).6H(2)O). In this work the influence of the operational conditions on the struvite precipitation process (pH in the reactor, hydraulic retention time, and magnesium:phosphorus, nitrogen:phosphorus, and calcium:magnesium molar ratios) have been studied. Twenty-three experiments with artificial wastewater were performed in a stirred reactor. In order to obtain the pH value maintenance during the crystallization process, a fuzzy logic control has been developed. High phosphorus removal efficiencies were reliably achieved precipitating t…
Sludge management modeling to enhance P-recovery as struvite in wastewater treatment plants
2017
[EN] Interest in phosphorus (P) recovery and reuse has increased in recent years as supplies of P are declining. After use, most of the P remains in wastewater, making Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) a vital part of P recycling. In this work, a new sludge management operation was studied by modeling in order to recover Pin the form of struvite and minimize operating problems due to uncontrolled P precipitation in WWTPs. During the study, intensive analytical campaigns were carried out on the water and sludge lines. The results identified the anaerobic digester as a "hot spot" of uncontrolled P precipitation (9.5 gP/kg sludge) and highlighted possible operating problems due to the accumu…
Sewage sludge management for phosphorus recovery as struvite in EBPR wastewater treatment plants
2008
The influence of separate and mixed thickening of primary and secondary sludge on struvite recovery was studied. Phosphorus precipitation in the digester was reduced from 13.7 g of phosphorus per kg of treated sludge in the separate thickening experiment to 5.9 in the mixed thickening experiment. This lessening of the uncontrolled precipitation means a reduction of the operational problems and enhances the phosphorus availability for its later crystallization. High phosphorus precipitation and recovery efficiencies were achieved in both crystallization experiments. However, mixed thickening configuration showed a lower percentage of phosphorus precipitated as struvite due to the presence of…
Hemoglobin dynamics in rat erythrocytes investigated by Mssbauer spectroscopy
1991
Rats have been enriched in 57Fe and erythrocytes were isolated from the blood. Mössbauer absorption spectroscopy on the hemoglobin of these erythrocytes has shown rather similar dynamics as found earlier in crystals of myoglobin, in frozen solutions of human hemoglobin and in a number of other proteins. The results strongly indicate that the motion of the heme and presumably some part of the F-helix is mainly influenced by the average viscosity of the sample determined by a network of hydrogen bridges and other weak interactions. Extrapolations of Mössbauer results from protein crystals to proteins in their physiological surroundings seem to be suitable for heme proteins.
Competition between α and γ phases in isotactic polypropylene: effects of ethylene content and nucleating agents at different cooling rates
2001
Abstract The influence of ethylene content, nucleating agents and cooling rate upon the formation of γ phase in isotactic polypropylene is investigated. Detailed analysis of wide angle X-ray diffraction shows that some γ phase can appear even in copolymers of very low ethylene content (0.5 mol.%). Differential scanning calorimetry shows a double melting peak. Nucleating agents of different types are found to enhance γ phase crystallization, even in high molecular weight homopolymers. In any of the materials studied the amount of γ phase decreases with increasing cooling rate, going to zero at a cooling rate of about 10°C s−1. We interpret the observations in terms of the kinetics of growth …
Synthesis and structural characterization of ethylene copolymers containing double-decker silsesquioxane as pendant groups and cross-linkage sites by…
2018
Abstract The copolymers of ethylene with the double-decker silsesquioxane (DDSQ) were synthesized by copolymerization with the use of metallocene and bis(phenoxy-imine) catalysts. The influence of the kind of the catalyst and polyreaction conditions on the performance of copolymerization as well as on the properties of the copolymers was studied. Depending on polyreaction parameters, the DDSQ contents in the copolymer varied in the range of 0.93–11.53 wt% which determined the compositions and the structural properties of copolymers. DDSQ incorporated into the polymer chain could constitute pendant groups in the main chain or it could act as a cross-linking agent. The ethylene/DDSQ copolymer…
Hydrate Networks under Mechanical Stress – A Case Study for Co 3 (PO 4 ) 2 ·8H 2 O
2016
The nature of the bound water in solids with hydrogen-bonded networks depends not only on temperature and pressure but also on the nature of the constituents. The collapse and reorientation of these network structures determines the stability of hydrated solids and transitions to other crystalline or amorphous phases. Here, we study the mechanochemically induced loss of bound water in Co₃(PO₄)₂·8H₂O and compare this process to the behavior under hydrostatic pressure. The associated phase transition and its kinetics were monitored by X-ray powder diffraction with Synchrotron radiation and quantitative IR spectroscopy. High shearing forces are responsible for the degradation of the hydrogen-b…
