The Intersections of Sexuality and Religion in the Anti-Interculturalist Rhetoric in Finnish Internet Discussion on Muslim Homosexuals in Amsterdam
2014
In recent decades, Europe has faced the rise of nationalist populist movements objecting to increased immigration, cultural pluralisation, and interculturalism in European societies. Public discussion on interculturalism have often focused on the encounters of – and the wrangles with – migrants and local people and their diverse values. The members of anti-immigrant movements commonly object to cultural pluralism and intercultural practices and foster ‘traditional’, ‘Western’, and ‘national’ values. The discourse influenced by conservative ideologies also often embraces traces of xenophobia, homophobia, and misogyny. In this paper, we ask how and why interculturalism is opposed in populist …
Basic structure and tax havens
2012
In this paper I argue that Rawlsian Law of People (LP) is much more useful to the debate on international distributive justice than it is commonly assumed by many leading political philosophers (Pogge, Nussbaum, Sen, Beitz, Singer). I will show: 1) that these criticisms are misleading, insofar as they do not take the concept of basic structure seriously, and they reduce LP to an instance of ethical statism or of acritical acceptance of cultural pluralism; 2) that the basic domestic structures, and the principles that govern them, depend on the law of peoples and its principles as well. Therefore it is not true that each basic structure is independent of what occurs in the international fiel…
Reflections on Interculturality in Relation to Education and Work
2005
Internationalization and intercultural education may be contradictory concepts as the former supports globalization of the economy and the latter explains mutual learning and intercultural understanding. Higher education is preparing planners, leaders, managers, administrators, policy-makers and teachers to societies. Are pedagogical approaches of higher education inspiring students to become aware of social processes such as multiculturalism and interculturalism? Higher education includes beliefs and explanations that reveal how far diversity is being valued. A choice of critical pedagogy, that is considering the entire society, world order and different groups of societies, is discussed. …
Diversification of diversity: Migrations, cultural pluralism and urban transformations in Palermo (Italy): a case study
2021
Italy experienced the transition from a country of emigration to a country of immigration only in the last decade of the 20th century. The extreme heterogeneity of the Italian scene – from the distribution and variety of productive sectors and local economic dimensions, to the geographical, cultural and linguistic varieties – results in an incredibly differentiated background on which the phenomenon of migrations fits as multiplier of diversity. But there are some particular fields in Italy where the challenges of superdiversity appear to be more prominent: the impact on the school system, in terms of linguistic-cultural pluralism; the change in religious belonging and identities; the dynam…

Maternal parenting styles, homework help, and children’s literacy development in language minority and Finnish-speaking families
2017
The aim of this study was to examine the role of mothers’ (language minority mothers, LM, n = 49, and Finnish-speaking mothers, MP, n = 368) parenting styles and maternal help with their children’s homework in the children’s (mean age 11.43 years) literacy skills at fourth grade in Finland. In addition, the moderating effect of a child’s gender on this relationship was investigated. The results showed that the LM mothers used psychological control more than MP mothers. Furthermore, the more LM mothers used warmth and psychological styles of parenting, the more they helped their daughters, not sons, with homework. MP mothers’ parenting styles did not relate to their children’s reading and sp…
