Active Audiences
2019
The concept of the active audience has been one of the most fruitful and provocative ones in the field of media literacy as it has brought media educators to seriously question the traditional ways of defining both their students’ involvement with the media and the effects they supposedly produce on them.
There's A Ghost In Every Mirror: The Identity of the Ghost In Hamlet
2009
Coming up Roses
2022
Discussing two short stories by contemporary Scottish author Ali Smith, my article recommends a close reading of short prose narratives as potential examples of ungendered character-narration. I combine queer and unnatural narrative theory to consider how forms of telling contribute to gender ambiguity. Further, I advocate interpretative strategies that resist naturalization and causal explanations. Instead, a queer reading of Smith’s “erosive” (2003) and “The beholder” (2015) delights in their ambiguity, waywardness, and narrative inventiveness. The texts can be approached as exercises in unknowing.
Keywords: queer narratology, unnatural narratology, ungendering, narrative voice, cau…
Values that Underlie and Undermine Well–Being: Variability across Countries
2017
We examined relations of 10 personal values to life satisfaction (LS) and depressive affect (DEP) in representative samples from 32/25 countries ( N = 121 495). We tested hypotheses both for direct relations and cross–level moderation of relations by Cultural Egalitarianism. We based hypotheses on the growth versus self–protection orientation and person–focus versus social–focus motivations that underlie values. As predicted, openness to change values (growth/person) correlated positively with subjective well–being (SWB: higher LS, lower DEP) and conservation values (self–protection/social) correlated negatively with SWB. The combination of underlying motivations also explained more comple…

The Five-star Movement inside the institutions in Sicily: from ‘swimming the Strait’ to institutionalisation in local politics
2019
This article considers the institutionalisation of the Five-star Movement (M5s) in regional and local councils. It discusses the process of the Movement’s institutionalisation, analysing the development of its internal organisation; its local platforms and political performance; its institutional repertoire of action, and the several internal and external conflicts between its own rules and the ‘others’. In particular, the article investigates the changes affecting the M5s after its engagement with the Sicilian regional assembly and Sicilian municipal councils, and the ways in which the specific institutionalisation process it underwent was influenced by the complexities of the political an…
Cross-Cultural Comparison of Student Perceptions and Performance in a Multicultural, Interdisciplinary and Bilingual Online Educational Project
2011
Exchange agreements between universities and new technologies are influencing the education-learning process during the past few years. E-learning has become an educational tool with several applications and the main aim of facilitating student learning process and adapting it to the social and professional reality. In this study, the authors present an online project based on a multicultural, interdisciplinary, and bilingual collaboration developed between two European universities: the University of Valencia (Spain) and the London School of Economics and Political Science (United Kingdom) through the free access academic platform, Moodle. Additionally, the chapter examines the significant…
