The Concept of Culture in Media Studies: A Critical Review of Academic Literature

This study examines the way culture has been researched in media studies and suggests how critical intercultural communication could contribute to the field. A literature review was conducted and articles (N=114) published in peer-reviewed journals between 2003 and 2013 were collected. Results show that studies dealing with media and culture do not systematically define the concept of culture. Findings also indicate that culture is oftentimes taken for granted instead of being problematized and addressed as a source of struggle. Advantages of using a critical intercultural communication framework to examine culture are discussed.

Jacques Rivette’s Paris nous appartient (1961) is about a literature student, Anne Goupil, who becomes involved with a group of bohemians centering around the absent figure of Spanish musician, Juan. The film incorporates the attempt by theatre director Gérard Lenz – in many ways a simulacrum of Rivette himself – to stage Pericles, even though this is a play that he himself defines as “incoherent” and “unplayable.” This essay explores the significance of this incorporation, and shows how the reiterated, fragmentary rehearsals of this “unplayable” play are essential to an understanding of the (disjointed) logic of the film as well as the atmosphere of conspiracy it continually evokes. This paper presents a Glaserian grounded theory study of adult students’ holistic professional growth in a two-year tailored, work-related, teacher qualification program in physical education. The data consisted of reflective learning diaries, interviews and the written texts of 20 adult students. The data analysis followed the stages of Glaserian grounded theory analysis with substantive and theoretical coding processes carried out using the constant comparative method. Las huellas de los lectores: de vuelta a los libros de caballerías anotados

Este trabajo tiene el doble objetivo de enriquecer el censo de los libros de caballerías anotados y revitalizar el estudio de los marginalia en cuanto fuente primaria para diferentes acercamientos críticos al género. Del cuadro esbozado emergen resultados que refuerzan las conclusiones de la bibliografía que se ha ocupado del tema, añadiendo un marcado acento sobre el alcance internacional del género, cuyos lectores-anotadores eran, en una relevante medida, extranjeros.

Lähtökohtana oli selvittää miten heitä representoidaan, eli kuvataan, edustetaan, millaisen vaikutelman ateisteista saa näiden sarjojen perusteella ja kohdellaanko uskonnollisia ja ateisti hahmoja samalla tavalla. El objetivo de este trabajo es explorar la relación entre las prácticas utilizadas por los docentes para enseñar a leer y a escribir en el inicio de la escolaridad y las oportunidades de aprendizaje. Se realiza un análisis cualitativo de una serie de tareas !levadas a cabo en aulas donde desarrollan tres tipos de prácticas diferentes -instruccionales, multidimensionales y sítuacionales-. Artikkelissa tutkitaan suomalaisen maiseman ja identiteetin kuvauksia suomenkielisessä rocklyriikassa vuosina 1980–1999. Aineisto muodostuu kahdestakymmenestä laulusta yhdeltätoista eri artistilta ja yhtyeeltä. Tutkimusmetodina käytetään temaattista sisällönanalyysiä. Kappaleiden ja niiden lyriikoiden tutkimus tuo lisätietoa Suomi-kuvan tutkimukseen ja nostaa esiin suomalaisen rockmusiikin äänen, joka on mukana ihmisten arjessa. Suomalainen rockmusiikki on osa suomalaista populaarikulttuuria ja kulttuurihistoriaa. Sillä on kyky uusintaa ja representoida Suomea ja suomalaisuutta.
