‘Human rights and democracy are not self-evident’ : Finnish student teachers’ perceptions on democracy and human rights education

This article discusses democracy and human rights education (DHRE) in Finnish teacher education, drawing on existing literature, curricula and a survey of student teachers’ perceptions. Earlier studies suggested that DHRE in Finnish teacher education is unsystematic, implicit, and dependent on the teacher’s individual interests. These studies highlight a sense of national exceptionalism, where DHRE is assumed to be self-evident. In 2019, we conducted a survey of student teachers (n=300) in one university. The curriculum is seen as a key steering document for teaching and learning. In Finland, its latest reform from 2014 highlights the importance of pupil’s learning rather than teaching. This article describes the learner-centered approach of the Finnish National Core Curriculum for Basic Education. The article aims to answer two questions: how the language instruction framework was inscribed into the 2017/2018 Polish language curriculum and what image of the linguistic and communicative competence results from this document. The research method is based on the assumption that these two questions can be answered by analysing the cognitive operators used in the description of specific requirements. Jau kopš 2014. gada autore izmanto starppriekšmetu saikni informātikas stundās, apvienojot informātikas un fizikas mācību priekšmetus, vidusskolēnu, it īpaši 10. klases skolēnu, motivēšanai. Skolotāju maģistra pieredzes darba ietvaros tika veikts pētījums 2018. gada pavasarī. Pētījumā izmantotā metode ir darbības pētījums. Pētījuma mērķis bija noskaidrot, vai starppriekšmetu saiknes izmantošana fizikā un informātikā uzlabos 10. klases skolēnu pamata kompetences (digitālo, saziņas, sadarb ̄ıbas un dabaszinātņu).
