Vertical Representation of C∞-words

2015

International audience; We present a new framework for dealing with C∞-words, based on their left and right frontiers. Thisallows us to give a compact representation of them, and to describe the set of C∞-words throughan infinite directed acyclic graph G. This graph is defined by a map acting on the frontiers ofC∞-words. We show that this map can be defined recursively and with no explicit reference toC∞-words. We then show that some important conjectures on C∞-words follow from analogousstatements on the structure of the graph G.

Whose business is it anyway? Distributing responsibilities between family members and formal carers

2015

This study reports on a discourse analysis of how responsibilities for the care of older people are defined and distributed in the interview talk of working caregivers in Finland. The analysis focuses on how the interviewees depict their encounters with professionals (e.g. social and health care workers) and the responsibilities attached to the position of a family member versus professional. The theme is examined against the backdrop of broader Finnish and European discussions about the development of welfare society, the relations between the state and individual citizens as well as discussions about older people’s care needs. Data were obtained by face-to-face interviews. In the intervie…

Language ideological landscapes for students in university language policies: inclusion, exclusion, or hierarchy

2022

Many universities in non-English speaking countries have been adopting English as a medium of instruction to internationalize their education. We set out to compare the language policies of a Finnish and a Japanese university using the lens of language ideology – a set of normative beliefs about the social dimension of language. Data were collected from selected documents of the two universities, and analyzed utilizing critical discursive psychology. This social constructionist approach allows mapping out language ideological landscapes – interrelationships among different co-occurring language ideologies – from which students may draw ideas about how they orient themselves towards their pe…

Les éditorialistes : auteurs scientifiques ou acteurs sociaux

2007

Discovery-learning in grammar education:a study on anaphoric pronouns

2022

Explicit Recursive and Adaptive Filtering in Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces

2014

This brief presents a methodology to develop recursive filters in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. Unlike previous approaches that exploit the kernel trick on filtered and then mapped samples, we explicitly define the model recursivity in the Hilbert space. For that, we exploit some properties of functional analysis and recursive computation of dot products without the need of preimaging or a training dataset. We illustrate the feasibility of the methodology in the particular case of the $\gamma$ -filter, which is an infinite impulse response filter with controlled stability and memory depth. Different algorithmic formulations emerge from the signal model. Experiments in chaotic and elect…

A fast recursive algorithm for the computation of axial moments

2002

This paper describes a fast algorithm to compute local axial moments used for the detection of objects of interest in images. The basic idea is grounded on the elimination of redundant operations while computing axial moments for two neighboring angles of orientation. The main result is that the complexity of recursive computation of axial moments becomes independent of the total number of computed moments in a given point, i.e. it is of the order O(N) where N is the data size. This result is of great importance in computer vision since many feature extraction methods are based on the computation of axial moments. The experimental results confirm the time complexity and accuracy predicted b…

Explicit recursivity into reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces

2011

This paper presents a methodology to develop recursive filters in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (RKHS). Unlike previous approaches that exploit the kernel trick on filtered and then mapped samples, we explicitly define model recursivity in the Hilbert space. The method exploits some properties of functional analysis and recursive computation of dot products without the need of pre-imaging. We illustrate the feasibility of the methodology in the particular case of the gamma-filter, an infinite impulse response (IIR) filter with controlled stability and memory depth. Different algorithmic formulations emerge from the signal model. Experiments in chaotic and electroencephalographic time se…
