Mid- and Longer-term Follow up of Chimney and/or Periscope Grafts and Risk Factors for Failure

2016

Objective The aim was to report on chimney and periscope grafts (CPGs) and their mid- and longer-term outcomes when they are used to preserve reno-visceral artery (RVA) perfusion in endovascular repair of pararenal (PRAAs) or thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAAs). In addition, factors associated with CPG failure are presented. Limited data exist on the outcomes of CPGs, and mid- and long-term results are generally not reported. Methods This was a prospective study in a cohort of 100 patients with PRAA (69) or TAAA (31). A total of 224 (mean 2.24 per patient) RVAs were preserved with 136 (61%) chimney and 88 (39%) periscope grafts. CPGs were constructed mainly using self expandable stent…

IPOD Study: Management of Acute Left Colonic Diverticulitis in Italian Surgical Departments.

2017

Background: In recent years, the emergency management of acute left colonic diverticulitis (ALCD) has evolved dramatically despite lack of strong evidence. As a consequence, management strategies are frequently guided by surgeon’s personal preference, rather than by scientific evidence. The primary aim of IPOD study (Italian Prospective Observational Diverticulitis study) is to describe both the diagnostic and treatment profiles of patients with ALCD in the Italian surgical departments. Methods: IPOD study is a prospective observational study performed during a 6-month period (from April 1 2015 to September 1 2015) and including 89 Italian surgical departments. All consecutive patients with…

Noradrenaline depleting and blood pressure lowering activity of threo-corbadrine

1968

Abstract Threo-corbadrine caused a long-lasting depletion of noradrenaline in the heart and in mesenteric vessels and lowered the blood pressure of normal and renal hypertensive rats. It is suggested that threo-cobadrine decreases vascular tone by acting peripherally as a substitute adrenergic transmitter.

Off-pump versus on-pump myocardial revascularization in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction: A randomized trial

2009

Objective Conventional cardioplegic arrest coronary artery bypass grafting after ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction is associated with high mortality and morbidity. The benefits of off-pump surgery have been suggested. This study randomly evaluated the impact of the off-pump technique on clinical results. Methods Between February 2002 and October 2007, 128 patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction who underwent myocardial revascularization within 48 hours from the onset of symptoms were randomly assigned to 2 groups: on-pump group (66 patients/51.5%) and off-pump group (63 patients/48.5%). The primary end point was the incidence of in-hospital death and outcomes (low …

Coronary artery bypass grafting in adult coronary artery disease due to suspected Kawasaki disease in childhood

2000

Development of coronary artery aneurysms is one typical complication of Kawasaki disease and can cause coronary artery disease even in early childhood. Information about course and outcome in adults is rare. Here, we present a 49-year-old man with serious three-vessel coronary artery disease and giant coronary artery aneurysms following suspected Kawasaki disease.

Reconstruction with a pectoralis major myocutaneous flap after left first rib and clavicular chest wall resection for a metastasis from laryngeal can…

2016

We presented a case of recurrent metastasis from epidermoid cancer that occurred in the left clavicle of a patient with a history of laryngeal cancer treated on April 2005 with extended hemilaryngectomy, neck dissection and chemoradiation therapy. On September 2008, he developed a left clavicular metastasis. The disease was initially well controlled by chemoradiotherapy but it recurred 17 months later. The optimal treatment plan was established by several multidisciplinary meetings and the patient subsequently underwent an en bloc resection of the left clavicle, first rib and all the other involved structures. Coverage of the thoracic defect was achieved using pectoralis major myocutaneous …

Randomized controlled comparison of optimal medical therapy with percutaneous recanalization of chronic total occlusion (COMET-CTO)

2021

The aim of this randomized prospective study was to evaluate the quality of life (QoL) using the “Seattle Angina Questionnaire” (SAQ) in patients with chronic total occlusion (CTO) in coronary arteries treated with either percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or optimal medical therapy (OMT), or only with OMT. The potential benefits of recanalization of CTO by PCI have been controversial because of the scarcity of randomized controlled trials. A total of 100 patients with CTO were randomized (1:1) prospectively into the PCI CTO or the OMT group (50 patients in each group). There were no baseline differences in the SAQ scores between the groups, except for physical limitation scores (P = …

The Italian Euromelanoma Day: evaluation of results and implications for future prevention campaigns.

2012

Background Melanoma incidence/mortality is increasing worldwide. “Euromelanoma Day” is a pan-European campaign for skin cancer prevention. Results of the 2010 Euromelanoma Day in Italy are reported herein. Materials and methods A questionnaire was used to collect data on participants' characteristics and suspected skin cancers. Result A total of 1085 participants was screened (64.1% females, median age 44 years). Suspicion rate, detection rate, and positive predictive values for melanoma were 1.3, 0.28 and 21.4%, respectively. Poorly educated, ≥35 years old, pale-skinned males were at higher risk for skin cancer than highly educated, <35 years old, darker-skinned females, although the latte…

The density and type of MECA-79-positive high endothelial venules correlate with lymphocytic infiltration and tumour regression in primary cutaneous …

2013

Aims Tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes have prognostic value in malignant melanoma. High endothelial venules (HEVs) are specialized vessels present in lymph nodes and tertiary lymphoid organs. CCL19, CCL21 and CCR7 regulate lymphocyte migration through HEVs. The aim of our study was to correlate HEV density in cutaneous primary and metastatic malignant melanomas with clinicopathological parameters, and with CCL19, CCL21 and CCR7 mRNA expression. Methods and results High endothelial venule density was evaluated by immunohistochemistry with a specific antibody, MECA-79, and chemokine expression was evaluated by real-time PCR. MECA-79-positive vessels, covered by cuboidal (C-HEV) or flat (F-HEV)…
