Immediate effects of wearing knee length socks differing in compression level on postural regulation in community-dwelling, healthy, elderly men and …
2018
Background Stimulation of lower limbs’ cutaneous receptors and mechanoreceptors through compression garments could potentially increase somatosensory system efficiency and aid postural regulation in elderly individuals. Research question This study examined immediate effects of wearing knee length socks (KLS) of various compression levels on somatosensory function in community-dwelling healthy elderly men and women during a double-limb standing, balancing task. Methods A total of forty-six elderly participants (Male = 23), aged between 65 and 84 years old, randomly selected from the Singapore community-dwelling, healthy population. Three treatment interventions (wearing clinical compression…
Metformin and contrast-induced acte kidney injury in diabetic patients treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention for ST segment elevati…
2016
IF 4.638; International audience; AIM : To analyze the association between chronic metformin treatment and the development of contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) after primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).METHODS: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) treated with PCI 27μmol/l (0.3mg/dl) or >50% over baseline after PCI. Since PCI was urgent, metformin could not be withheld prior to PCI but was usually stopped after PCI.RESULTS:Among the 372 patients included, 147 (40%) were using metformin, which had older diabetes, but had risk factors similar to patients without metformin. Baseline eGFR was better in pati…
Efficacy of systemic administration of riboflavin on a rabbit model of corneal alkali burn
2020
AbstractChanges in the barrier mechanisms in the eye should determine the rational route for the administration and dosage of each drug in the treatment of traumatic injuries and other pathologies. The aim of this study was to examine the efficacy of intra-arterial delivery of 14C-riboflavin (as an “indicator”) and compare it with intravenous and intramuscular administration in an animal model of chemical eye burn. 14C-riboflavin (14C-I) was administered by intra-arterial (carotid artery), intravenous (femoral vein) and intramuscular (femoral muscle) routes. The total radioactivity was determined over 2 h in the plasma and structures of the rabbit’s eyes using a scintillation counter. The r…
Laparoscopic drainage of liver abscess: case report and literature review.
2013
Aim To evaluate the safety and efficacy of the minimally invasive surgical approach (laparoscopic drainage) of liver abscesses in selected cases. Case report Male, 58 years old, from a rural area, presented with epigastric abdominal pain, fever, weight loss, loss of appetite, a palpable mass in the epigastrium and neutrophilic leukocytosis. CT revealed a complex multiloculated liver abscess in segments 2-3. Systemic antibiotic therapy alone was ineffective; percutaneous drainage was excluded due to the characteristics of the lesion. Result Given the complexity of the lesion, a laparoscopic approach was chosen involving complete drainage of the abscess, debridement and irrigation; the cavity…
Role of PCSK9 in the course of ejection fraction change after ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction: a pilot study
2020
Altres ajuts: Conselleria d'Educació, Investigació, Cultura i Esport GV/2018/116 Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) has emerged as a therapeutic target for reducing plasma low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Beyond lipid control, recent findings suggest a deleterious effect of this protein in the pathogenesis of postmyocardial infarction left ventricle remodelling and heart failure-related complications. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between circulating PCSK9 and 6 month cardiac magnetic resonance imaging-derived left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) after a first ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). We prospectively evaluated 40…
Risk factors for contrast induced nephropathy: A study among Italian patients
2012
This study aimed to make a profile of patients at highest risk of developing contrast induced nephropathy (CIN) in order to take appropriate prevention measures. 591 patients undergoing coronary procedures were divided into two groups: patients with (CIN-group) and without (no-CIN) an increase in creatinine level equal or more than 25% from baseline values within 24-48 h after the coronary procedure. All patients underwent an accurate anamnesis, objective exam, hematochemical measurements, and diagnostic exams. The results of this study while confirming that, average age (p = 0.01), diabetes mellitus (p < 0.0001), base line renal insufficiency (p = 0.0001), diuretic therapy (p = 0.002), hig…
Biased postural vertical in humans with hemispheric cerebral lesions.
1998
International audience; This study was aimed at demonstrating the existence of a biased postural vertical in humans with a recent cerebral lesion. The postural vertical of patients and controls was analysed comparatively using a self-regulated balancing task, performed in sitting posture. Patients displayed a quite constant (19/22) contralesional tilt of the postural vertical (mean -2.6 degrees), varying with the severity of their spatial neglect and hemianaethesia. Eight of them showed a pathological contralesional bias (mean -5.5 degrees) as compared to normals. This result indicates an asymmetric process of somatic graviceptive information due to some cerebral lesions. When patients were…
Oral dabigatran versus enoxaparin for thromboprophylaxis after primary total hip arthroplasty (RE-NOVATE II)
2010
SummaryThis trial compared the efficacy and safety of oral dabigatran, a direct thrombin inhibitor, versus subcutaneous enoxaparin for extended thromboprophylaxis in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty. A total of 2,055 patients were randomised to 28–35 days treatment with oral dabigatran, 220 mg once-daily, starting with a half-dose 1–4 hours after surgery, or subcutaneous enoxaparin 40 mg once-daily, starting the evening before surgery. The primary efficacy outcome was a composite of total venous thromboembolism [VTE] (venographic or symptomatic) and death from all-causes. The main secondary composite outcome was major VTE (proximal deep-vein thrombosis or non-fatal pulmonary embol…
N-Terminal Fragment of Pro B-type Natriuretic Peptide as a Marker of Contrast-Induced Nephropathy After Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention fo…
2015
Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is frequent and associated with long-term renal impairment and mortality. Early markers of CIN are needed to improve risk stratification. We aimed to assess whether N-terminal fragment of pro B-type natriuretic peptide (Nt-proBNP) could be associated with CIN. From the French regional RICO survey, all the consecutive patients who underwent primary PCI for STEMI, from January 1, 2001, to December 3, 2013, were included. Nt-proBNP circulating levels were assessed on admission. CIN was defined as an increase in serum creatinine26.5 μmol/L or50% within 48 to 7…
Prognostic Value of New-Generation Troponins in ST-Segment-Elevation Myocardial Infarction in the Modern Era: The RUTI-STEMI Study.
2017
Background In ST ‐segment–elevation myocardial infarction ( STEMI ), troponins are not needed for diagnosis: symptoms and ECG data are sufficient to activate percutaneous coronary intervention. This study explored the prognostic value of new‐generation troponins in a real‐life cohort contemporarily treated for STEMI . Methods and Results We studied 1260 consecutive patients with primary STEMI treated with percutaneous coronary intervention between February 22, 2011, and August 31, 2015. We collected data on clinical characteristics and major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events ( MACCEs ) at 30 days and 1 year. Peak high‐sensitivity troponin T and sensitive‐contemporary tropon…
