ULTRASOUND (US) GUIDED DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES AND MALIGNANT PLEURAL EFFUSIONS

2022

Introduction: Malignant pleural effusion (PE) is a rather frequent complication of several intrathoracic and extrathoracic tumors and has an incidence of about 660 patients per million inhabitants per year. Materials and methods: We retrospectively studied (2000 to 2018) the utility of US guided percutaneous puncture (PP) of PE, in the diagnosis/therapy of 121 patients (67 women and 54 men) with PE and suspected malignant neoplasm, mean age 52 years (39-78 years), Results: The diagnostic accuracy of the US guided PP fluid examination, (diagnoses of malignant PE), was 91.7% (111/121), with sensitivity of 89.5% (86/96) and specificity of 100%. (25/25). 10 patients did not have confirmation of…

Sumatriptan Succinate Transdermal Delivery Systems for The Treatment of Migraine

2007

We have successfully obtained sumatriptan transdermal systems with different polymer compositions: methyl cellulose (MC), polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and a polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP)-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) mixture. The systems contained 1,2-propylenglycol (MC) or sorbitol as a plasticizer (PVP and PVP-PVA), methacrylate copolymer as an adhesive agent, and an occlusive liner. Azone (5%, w/w) was incorporated into all the systems as a percutaneous enhancer. Transdermal systems are thin, transparent and non-adhesive when in a dry state. The permeation of sumatriptan succinate across pig ear skin was studied using the systems prepared. The formulation with MC polymer produced a statistically …

Granulocytenfunktionsdefekte bei granulomatser muco-cutaner candidiasis

1975

Comparative enhancer effects of Span20 with Tween20 and Azone on the in vitro percutaneous penetration of compounds with different lipophilicities.

2000

Sorbitan monolaurate (Span20) was used in this study to analyze the influence of the polar functional group on the effects that non-ionic surfactants have on skin permeability. Its ethoxylate derivative polysorbate 20 (Tween20) and Azone, both with the same C12 alkyl chain as Span20, were used for comparative purposes. We evaluated the relative potency of the three molecules as enhancers in the permeability of a series of compounds with lipophilicities ranging from log Poct=-0.95 to log Poct=2.33. The influence of the enhancer concentration was also studied. For this purpose the epidermis of Wistar rat was pretreated with ethanolic solutions (1 and 5%, w/v) of each enhancer. Our results ind…

Spanish Menopause Society position statement: Use of denosumab in postmenopausal women

2014

Denosumab is a new drug developed for the treatment of osteoporosis. Moreover, increasing evidences link denosumab with benefits in cancer, an area of interest for those in charge of the postmenopausal health. Denosumab has shown efficacy in the control of bone loss associated with hypogonadic states created by chemotherapy in breast and other cancers. Moreover, some studies reveal efficacy in reducing the progression of metastases. A panel of experts from the Spanish Menopause Society has met to develop usage recommendations based on the best available evidence.

Percutaneous nephrostomy in the treatment of hydronephrosis during pregnancy: Our experience

1998

Hydronephrosis during pregnancy is commonly considered physiological due to compression of the ureters by the gravid uterus and by dilated ovarian veins. Only in symptomatic cases or secondary to obstruction is a urinary diversion required. Six cases of symptomatic hydronephrosis treated with percutaneous nephrostomy are reported. Tocolytic therapy was practised in order to avoid the risk of abortion.

The appropriate and justified use of medical radiation in cardiovascular imaging: a position document of the ESC Associations of Cardiovascular Imagi…

2014

The benefits of cardiac imaging are immense, and modern medicine requires the extensive and versatile use of a variety of cardiac imaging techniques. Cardiologists are responsible for a large part of the radiation exposures every person gets per year from all medical sources. Therefore, they have a particular responsibility to avoid unjustified and non-optimized use of radiation, but sometimes are imperfectly aware of the radiological dose of the examination they prescribe or practice. This position paper aims to summarize the current knowledge on radiation effective doses (and risks) related to cardiac imaging procedures. We have reviewed the literature on radiation doses, which can range …

The abrogation of the HOXB7/PBX2 complex induces apoptosis in melanoma through the miR-221&222-c-FOS pathway.

2013

Cutaneous melanoma is the fastest increasing cancer worldwide. Although several molecular abnormalities have been associated with melanoma progression, the underlying mechanisms are still largely unknown and few targeted therapies are under evaluation. Here we show that the HOXB7/PBX2 dimer acts as a positive transcriptional regulator of the oncogenic microRNA-221 and -222. In addition, demonstrating c-FOS as a direct target of miR-221&222, we identify a HOXB7/PBX2→miR-221&222 →c-FOS regulatory link, whereby the abrogation of functional HOXB7/PBX2 dimers leads to reduced miR-221&222 transcription and elevated c-FOS expression with consequent cell death. Taking advantage of the treatment wit…

Combined inhibition of Bcl-2 and NFκB synergistically induces cell death in cutaneous T-cell lymphoma.

2019

Abstract Therapeutic options for cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) are limited and curative treatment regimens are not available. Thus, new targeted and well-tolerated therapeutic approaches are urgently needed. In this respect, we have recently shown that dimethyl fumerate (DMF) inhibits NF-κB acting as a survival factor in CTCL. Similarly, inhibition of the antiapoptotic protein B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) has been shown to induce cell death in CTCL especially when combined with histone deacetylase inhibitors. Therefore, we hypothesized that inhibition of Bcl-2 should potentiate NF-κB inhibition in a novel combination treatment of CTCL. We show that, in vitro, the Bcl-2 inhibitors ABT-199 an…
