Science and Healthy Meals in the World: Nutritional Epigenomics and Nutrigenetics of the Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean Diet (MD), UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, has become a scientific topic of high interest due to its health benefits. The aim of this review is to pick up selected studies that report nutrigenomic or nutrigenetic data and recapitulate some of the biochemical/genomic/genetic aspects involved in the positive health effects of the MD. Abstract Fumonisins (FBs) are bioactive compounds produced by several strains of Fusarium spp. which contain a polyketide structure similar to sphinganine. These mycotoxins contain a free amino group that could work as an electron donor and react with the electrophile carbon present within the isothiocyanate (ITC) group. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of ITCs (allyl, benzyl and phenyl) on the stability of FB 1 , FB 2 and FB 3 . Firstly, PBS solutions at three pH levels (4, 7 and 9) were prepared and added with pairs of one FB (1 mg/L) plus one ITC (1 mg/L). Abstract Work examines the origin of bactericidal activity in mustard flour and explores the relative contribution from starter cultures, E. coli O157:H7 itself and other sources. Bacteria can degrade naturally occurring glucosinolates in mustard and form isothiocyanates with antimicrobial activity. In the present work, 24 starter cultures (mostly from commercial mixtures) were screened for their capacity to decompose the glucosinolate, sinalbin. Novel mixed-valence Cu compounds formed by Cu(II) dimers with double oximato bridges: in situ formation of anionic layer [Cu2(SCN)3]n(n-).

Two new N3O donor ketoxime Schiff bases (HL(1) and HL(2)) have been synthesized by condensing N,N-dimethylethylenediamine with diacetylmonoxime and benzilmonoxime, respectively in a 1:1 ratio. Reaction of Cu(ClO4)2·6H2O with HL(1) resulted in a discrete oximato-bridged dinuclear Cu(II) complex [Cu2(L(1))2(H2O)2](ClO4)2 (1). The same reaction in presence of NaSCN affords the complex {[Cu(II)2(L(1))2][Cu(I)4(μ(1,3)-SCN)4(μ(1,1,3)-SCN)2]}n (2), where partial Cu(II)→Cu(I) reduction is observed. Reversible Colorimetric Probes for Mercury Sensing

The selectivity and sensitivity of two colorimetric sensors based on the ruthenium complexes N719 [bis(2,2'-bipyridyl-4,4'-dicarboxylate)ruthenium(II) bis(tetrabutylammonium) bis(thiocyanate)] and N749 [(2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine-4,4',4' '-tricarboxylate)ruthenium(II) tris(tetrabutylammonium) tris(isothiocyanate)] are described. It was found that mercury ions coordinate reversibly to the sulfur atom of the dyes' NCS groups. This interaction induces a color change in the dyes at submicromolar concentrations of mercury. Furthermore, the color change of these dyes is selective for mercury(II) when compared with other ions such as lead(II), cadmium(II), zinc(II), or iron(II). The detection limit…

Permanent stenting in “unextractable” common bile duct stones in high risk patients. A prospective randomized study comparing two different stents

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic sphincterotomy (ES) and stone extraction is the treatment of choice for bile duct stones. Therefore, if ES and conventional stone extraction fail, further treatment is mandatory. Insertion of a biliary endoprosthesis is an effective option. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We treated 30 high-risk patients (17 women and 13 men, mean age 82 years) affected by difficult common bile duct stones. A Versatile Synthesis of Fluorinated Uracils in Solution and on Solid-Phase.

[reaction: see text] An efficient and convenient two-step synthesis of new fluorinated uracils is described. The first step involves the condensation of an ester enolate with a fluorinated nitrile to furnish fluorinated beta-enamino esters. In turn, these compounds react with organic isocyanates or isothiocyanates to give C-6 fluorinated uracils or thiouracils, respectively, in excellent yields. This synthesis has been successfully adapted to solid-phase conditions with high diversity, thereby facilitating the creation of small (thio)uracil libraries.

Pyrrolo[2,1-d][1,2,3,5]tetrazinones 10a-o, compounds that hold the deaza skeleton of the antitumor drug temozolomide, were prepared by reaction of 2-diazopyrroles 9 and isocyanates. Such a synthetic route represents, among those leading to azolotetrazinones reported so far, the only possible one since attempts to cyclize to the title ring system 2-amino-1-carbamoylpyrroles 11 or the mono substituted 2-triazenopyrrole 12 failed.
