Sensor Fusion Localization and Navigation for Visually Impaired People
2018
In this paper, we present an innovative cyber physical system for indoor and outdoor localization and navigation, based on the joint utilization of dead-reckoning and computer vision techniques on a smartphone-centric tracking system. The system is explicitly designed for visually impaired people, but it can be easily generalized to other users, and it is built under the assumption that special reference signals, such as colored tapes, painted lines, or tactile paving, are deployed in the environment for guiding visually impaired users along pre-defined paths. Differently from previous works on localization, which are focused only on the utilization of inertial sensors integrated into the s…
Co-simulation of bio-inspired multi-agent algorithms
2020
This paper reports on the co-simulation of a team of robots deployed in an exploration task, coordinated by a bio-inspired exploration algorithm. The co-simulation integrates the high-level exploration algorithm with detailed implementations of the robot controllers and kinematic models. Co-simulation results are used to find and correct mismatches between submodels.
Semantic interoperability between BIM and GIS – review of existing standards and depiction of a novel approach
2019
International audience; When it comes to Big Data ecosystems, main technical challenges pertain to defining links between data, information and knowledge, thus reaching interoperability. Interoperability issues are addressed in the context of data curation related tasks. Interoperability is a major prerequisite for achieving data automation, validation, thus fighting counter-productiveness (notably through data incentivisation). The demand for interoperable, reusable and open data is more and more present, thus pushing forward the research for innovation data curation approaches. This article gives a high level description of our approach for bridging the interoperability gap among GIS (Geo…

A Review of Recent Reference Architectures for Cyber-Physical Systems, in the Industry 4.0 Era
2018
Abstract With the uptake of the IoT in the industrial domain, a whole new range of cyber-physical systems has emerged; Industry 4.0 is the title given to this technological domain of highly interconnected, data-rich systems. To aid the development of such systems, a range of reference architectures has been developed throughout the years. This paper reviews a number of recent reference architectures, detailing their essential traits as well as identifying aspects that need to be further explored in order to obtain reference architectures better tuned to generating cyber-physical social systems.
Human-centred Assembly: A Case Study for an Anthropocentric Cyber-physical System
2014
Abstract To engineer the factory of the future the paper argues for an anthropocentric cyber-physical reference model that assimilate in an integrated, dynamic, structural and functional way all the required components (i.e. physical, computational and human) of a synthetic hybrid system. This is due to the real need to design large-scale complex systems that accommodate the latest achievements in factory automation where the human is not merely playing a simple and clear role inside the control-loop, but is becoming a composite factor in a highly automated system (“man-in-the-mesh”). The concept is demonstrated by instantiating our anthropocentric cyber-physical reference model in a concre…
Towards a cyber-physical era: soft computing framework based multi-sensor array for water quality monitoring
2018
Abstract. New concepts and techniques are replacing traditional methods of water quality parameter measurement systems. This paper introduces a cyber-physical system (CPS) approach for water quality assessment in a distribution network. Cyber-physical systems with embedded sensors, processors and actuators can be designed to sense and interact with the water environment. The proposed CPS is comprised of sensing framework integrated with five different water quality parameter sensor nodes and soft computing framework for computational modelling. Soft computing framework utilizes the applications of Python for user interface and fuzzy sciences for decision making. Introduction of multiple sen…
Do Not Cancel My Race with Cyber-Physical Systems
2014
Abstract To engineer the factory of the future the paper argues for a reference model that is not necessary restricted to the control component, but integrates the physical and human components as well. This is due to the real need to accommodate the latest achievements in factory automation where the human is not merely playing a simple and clear role inside the control-loop, but is becoming a composite factor in a highly automated system (“man in the mesh”). The concept is demonstrated by instantiating the anthropocentric cyber-physical reference architecture for smart factories (ACPA4SF) in a concrete case study that needs to accommodate the ongoing researches from the SmartFactory KL fa…
Main Requirements of a Cyber Physical Production System Demonstrator
2019
Abstract The paper is focused on identifying the main requirements for developing a CPPS demonstrator prototype. This research aims to categorize the main components and interactions within a new manufacturing system which are required to accommodate a CPPS. The proposed CPPS demonstrator also includes the preliminary requirements identified from the discussions with the regional industry, so that the prototype of the production system could be easily understood and also be the basis for further collaborations. The identified requirements were structured according to the top-down principle focusing on accomplishing the major objectives to be achieved through the prototype of the production …
