Metamodel-Based Analysis of Cross-Flow-Induced Vibrations

2018

This work presents the study of numerical modelling of the fluid flow and circular cylinder interaction to investigate the cross-flow induced vibrations in the rod bundle. It is assumed that failure due to flow-induced vibrations of the rod can be described by the reduction of the rod mass, the rod support stiffness or damping coefficient. The metamodel-based approach is applied to investigate the main trends of the system’s characteristic behaviour related to the variations of the chosen parameters. The two-dimensional Finite Volume models have been developed using open-source software to get a mapping of input and output variables for the metamodel. The impact of assumed failure parameter…

LES of the flow around two cylinders in tandem

2008

The flow around an arrangement of two-in-tandem cylinders exhibits a remarkably\ud complex behaviour that is of interest for many engineering problems, such as environmental\ud flows or structural design. In the present paper, a Large Eddy Simulation using a staggered\ud Cartesian grid has been performed for the flow around two-in-tandem cylinders of diameter\ud D=20mm and height H=50mm submerged in an open channel with height h=60 mm. The two\ud axes have a streamwise spacing of 2D. The Reynolds number is 1500, based on the cylinder\ud diameter and the free-stream velocity u. The results obtained show that no vortex shedding\ud occurs in the gap between the two cylinders where the separat…

Thermally unstable throughflow of a power–law fluid in a vertical porous cylinder with arbitrary cross–section

2021

Abstract The present paper investigates how the cross–sectional shape of a vertical porous cylinder affects the onset of thermoconvective instability of the Rayleigh–Benard type. The fluid saturating the porous medium is assumed to be a non–Newtonian power–law fluid. A linear stability analysis of the vertical thorughflow is carried out. Three special shapes of the cylinder cross–section are analysed: square, circular and elliptical. The effect of changing the power–law index is investigated. The stability of a steady base state with vertical throughflow is analysed. The resulting stability problem is a differential eigenvalue problem that is solved numerically through the shooting method. …

Existence and uniqueness for a degenerate parabolic equation with 𝐿¹-data

1999

In this paper we study existence and uniqueness of solutions for the boundary-value problem, with initial datum in L 1 ( Ω ) L^{1}(\Omega ) , u t = d i v a ( x , D u ) in  ( 0 , ∞ ) × Ω , \begin{equation*}u_{t} = \mathrm {div} \mathbf {a} (x,Du) \quad \text {in } (0, \infty ) \times \Omega , \end{equation*} − ∂ u ∂ η a ∈ β ( u ) on  ( 0 , ∞ ) × ∂ Ω , \begin{equation*}-{\frac {{\partial u} }{{\partial \eta _{a}}}} \in \beta (u) \quad \text {on } (0, \infty ) \times \partial \Omega ,\end{equation*} u ( x , 0 ) = u 0 ( x ) in  Ω , \begin{equation*}u(x, 0) = u_{0}(x) \quad \text {in }\Omega ,\end{equation*} where a is a Carathéodory function satisfying the classical Leray-Lions hypothesis, ∂ / …

New special function recurrences giving new indefinite integrals

2018

ABSTRACTSequences of new recurrence relations are presented for Bessel functions, parabolic cylinder functions and associated Legendre functions. The sequences correspond to values of an integer variable r and are generalizations of each conventional recurrence relation, which correspond to r=1. The sequences can be extended indefinitely, though the relations become progressively more intricate as r increases. These relations all have the form of a first-order linear inhomogeneous differential equation, which can be solved by an integrating factor. This gives a very general indefinite integral for each recurrence. The method can be applied to other special functions which have conventional …

A Self-Contained Cylinder Drive with Indirectly Controlled Hydraulic Lock

2020

This paper presents a self-contained pump-controlled hydraulic linear drive including an innovative load holding sub-circuit. For safety critical applications such as crane manipulators, locking valves or load holding valves are enforced by legislation, but the load holding functionality may also be used actively to decrease the energy consumption for applications where the load is kept stationary for longer periods of time. The system proposed in this paper is based on a simple hydraulic architecture using two variablespeed electric motors each connected to a fixed-displacement pump. This architecture is well-known inacademic literature, but in this paper a novel load holding sub-circuit h…

BFRP grid confined clay brick masonry cylinders under axial compression: Experimental results

2018

The use of composite materials for retrofitting of masonry structures has received great attention during the last two decades. For masonry buildings there are several advantages in using composite materials. Traditional techniques that were largely used and investigated in the past, may be inadequate in seismic areas where the added mass could increase seismic actions. Moreover, for historical and architectural heritage structures, the compatibility, sustainability and reversibility of the intervention is a key factor for the selection of the most appropriate strengthening system. Many investigations have shown that fibre reinforced polymers (FRP) can be effectively used to induce a passiv…

Further Experiments on the Effect of Bulk In-Cylinder Temperature in the Pressurized Motoring Setup Using Argon Mixtures

2020

Mechanical friction and heat transfer in internal combustion engines have long been studied through both experimental and numerical simulation. This publication presents a continuation study on a Pressurized Motoring setup, which was presented in SAE paper 2018-01-0121 and found to offer robust measurements at relatively low investment and running cost. Apart from the limitation that the peak in-cylinder pressure occurs around 1 DegCA BTDC, the pressurized motoring method is often criticized on the fact that the gas temperatures in motoring are much lower than that in fired engines, hence might reflect in a different FMEP measurement. In the work presented in SAE paper 2019-01-0930, Argon w…
