Disulfide bridge formation between C1q and IgG in vitro.
1990
The globular heads of C1q are known to possess free-SH groups. Here we show that these groups, which are concealed in the native molecule, are exposed by interaction of C1q with dialysis membrane. During iodination, I+ and I2 oxidize these sulfhydryls to produce disulfide-linked C1q aggregates. Approximately 15% of C1q bound to immunoglobulin aggregates is resistant to high conductivity elution and reducing agent is required to release it. These data show that dialysis, adsorption to Ig and iodination of C1q result in structural and functional changes in the molecule, and suggest a mechanism by which these changes occur. Disulfide bridging between C1q and IgG in vitro suggests that this may…
No evidence for an association of plasma homocysteine levels and refractive error – Results from the population-based Gutenberg Health Study (GHS)
2020
Purpose There is a strong association between severe hyperhomocysteinemia and myopia. Thus we studied the hypothesis that even moderately increased levels of homocysteine (Hcy) might be a potentially treatable risk factor for myopia. Methods The Gutenberg Health Study (GHS) is a population-based, prospective, observational cohort study in Germany, including 15,010 participants aged between 35 and 74 at recruitment. The baseline examination was conducted from 2007–2012. Refraction was measured using autorefraction (HARK 599, Carl Zeiss AG, Jena, Germany). Hcy was measured by an immunoassay. We included only phakic participants without a history of corneal surgery or corneal laser treatment. …
Long-Term Follow-Up of Repeat Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy in Obstructive Hydrocephalus.
2017
Endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) is a safe and less-invasive treatment strategy for patients with obstructive hydrocephalus and provides excellent outcome. Nevertheless, repeat ETV in cases of ETV failure is a controversial issue.Between 1993 and 1999, 113 patients underwent a total of 126 ETVs at the Department of Neurosurgery, Mainz University Hospital. Obstructive hydrocephalus was the causative pathology in all cases. A very long-term follow-up of up to 16 years could be achieved. All medical reports of patients who received ETV were reviewed and analyzed with focus on ETV failure with following repeat ETV and its initial as well as very long-term success.Thirty-one events of ETV …
Epidermal inclusion cyst of the penis after urethroplasty causing an urethro-cutaneous fistula: a first case report
2014
Penile epidermal cysts are uncommon. We report a pediatric case of epidermal inclusion cyst of the penis after urethroplasty, responsible of the appearance of an urethro-cutaneous fistula. In our opinion, surgical excision of epidermal inclusion cyst after urethroplasty must be performed as quickly as possible to avoid occurrence of postoperative complications.
ICUD-EAU International Consultation on Bladder Cancer 2012: Urinary diversion.
2012
Context: A summary of the 2nd International Consultation on Bladder Cancer recommendations on the reconstructive options after radical cystectomy (RC), their outcomes, and their complications. Objective: To review the literature regarding indications, surgical details, postoperative care, complications, functional outcomes, as well as quality-of-life measures of patients with different forms of urinary diversion (UD). Evidence acquisition: An English-language literature review of data published between 1970 and 2012 on patients with UD following RC for bladder cancer was undertaken. No randomized controlled studies comparing conduit diversion with neobladder or continent cutaneous diversion…
[Cystic dysplasia of rete testis associated with ipsilateral renal agenesis. Case report].
2003
Cystic dysplasia of the rete testis is a rare abnormality often associated with the ipsilateral agenesis of kidney. This malformation is due to a development defect of the mesonephric duct which is the cause of both the dilation of the testicular rete testis and renal agenesis. A case of this rare malformation, showing all the peculiarities described in the medical literature, is presented. A 3 years-4 months boy was examined for an asymptomatic left scrotal mass; thus, he underwent ultrasonography, which showed a multiple tubular and cystic dilatation of left rete testis, associated with the absence of left kidney, afterward confirmed by MAG3-radionuclide scan. Diagnosis was also validated…
Mutation ofPOC1Bin a Severe Syndromic Retinal Ciliopathy
2014
We describe a consanguineous Iraqi family with Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA), Joubert syndrome (JBTS), and polycystic kidney disease (PKD). Targeted next-generation sequencing for excluding mutations in known LCA and JBTS genes, homozygosity mapping, and whole-exome sequencing identified a homozygous missense variant, c.317G>C (p.Arg106Pro), in POC1B, a gene essential for ciliogenesis, basal body, and centrosome integrity. In silico modeling suggested a requirement of p.Arg106 for the formation of the third WD40 repeat and a protein interaction interface. In human and mouse retina, POC1B localized to the basal body and centriole adjacent to the connecting cilium of photoreceptors and in …
Enteroparasites in Preschool Children on the Pacific Region of Nicaragua
2018
The aim of this study was to determine for the first time the prevalence of enteroparasites in preschool children originating from the seven departments of the Pacific region in Nicaragua. One stool sample of each of 1,217 children, from 6 months to 5 years of age, was collected and personal data were recorded on delivery of the container. Samples fixed in 10% formalin were processed by a formol-acetate concentration and a modified Ziehl–Neelsen technique. The overall prevalence of enteroparasite infections was 68.2% with a total of at least 20 species. Blastocystis hominis (45.5%), Giardia intestinalis (31.7%), Trichuris trichiura (8.2%), and Ascaris lumbricoides (5.2%) were the most preva…
The Tick Salivary Protein Sialostatin L Inhibits the Th9-Derived Production of the Asthma-Promoting Cytokine IL-9 and Is Effective in the Prevention …
2012
Abstract Ticks developed a multitude of different immune evasion strategies to obtain a blood meal. Sialostatin L is an immunosuppressive cysteine protease inhibitor present in the saliva of the hard tick Ixodes scapularis. In this study, we demonstrate that sialostatin L strongly inhibits the production of IL-9 by Th9 cells. Because we could show recently that Th9-derived IL-9 is essentially involved in the induction of asthma symptoms, sialostatin L was used for the treatment of experimental asthma. Application of sialostatin L in a model of experimental asthma almost completely abrogated airway hyperresponsiveness and eosinophilia. Our data suggest that sialostatin L can prevent experime…
Saliva electrophoretic protein profiles in infants: changes with age and impact of teeth eruption and diet transition.
2011
International audience; Objective : The objective of this study was to describe the changes in salivary protein profiles in infants between the ages of 3 and 6 months, and to evaluate the impact of teeth eruption and introduction of solid foods on such profiles. Design : 73 infants were followed longitudinally at 3 and 6 months of age. Their whole saliva proteins were separated by SDS–PAGE electrophoresis and semi-quantified by image analysis. Amylase activity was also measured on a sub-sample of the population (n=42 infants). Bands which abundance was significantly different between the two ages according to paired comparisons were identified by mass spectrometry techniques. Results : Out …
