Bilateral lung and liver hydatid cyst
2012
Introduction. Thymomas (THs) are rare epithelial tumors of the thymus gland. In this study we report our personal experience in the management and surgical treatment of THs. Case reports. We report two clinical cases treated with combined therapy (surgery followed by adjuvant therapy). Results. Total transternal thymectomy was performed in both patients. The post-operative course was uneventful. The patients received adjuvant radiotherapy and chemotherapy. No relapse has been observed during follow-up. Discussion. THs are usually slowly growing tumors with similar incidence in both sexes. They occur through a wide age range, with a peak in the fifth and sixth decades. Distinctive features r…
OSSERVAZIONi A PROPOSITO DI UN CASO DI CISTI GIGANTE DELLA MILZA
2005
The Authors, on the basis of a case of giant spleen cyst with positive tumoral markers, analyse some epidemiological and clinical aspects related to splenic non parasitic cysts. They affirm the priority of the conservative surgery, whenever possible, followed by an appropriate follow-up, although in this case their therapeutic choice was radical, due to the lack of residual parenchyma. In accordance with the data of several publications, as well as on the basis of the results obtained, the conservative approaches have been reevaluated, above all in view of the modern findings related to the function of the spleen. The conservative approach cannot be carried out in the following cases: neopl…
Struma ovarii. Case report and revision of the literature
2011
Struma ovarii is a rare form of ovarian neoplasm, entirely or predominantly composed of thyroid tissue. This tumour generally has a benign biological behavior, although some cases of malignant transformation have been reported (5-10%). The tumour usually presents as an asymptomatic mature mass that may measure as much as 10 cm in diameter. The presence of ascites is possible (15-20%), and in a few cases the association of ascites and hydrothorax has been recorded (Pseudo-Meigs Syndrome); a close relationship between ascites and high levels of Ca-125, that may wrongly induce to a diagnosis of ovarian carcinoma is present. Other possible clinical consequences are compressive symptoms on adjac…

ADIPONECTIN, LEPTIN, RESISTIN LEVELS IN CYSTIC FIBROSIS ADOLESCENTS
2012
INTRODUCTION: Patients with Cystic Fibrosis, especially in adolescence, could develop endocrine and metabolic complications, related to nutritional state and chronic inflammation. They develop a progressive decrease in lean body mass correlated with the progression of lung disease. Adipose tissue is involved as well and adipocytokines are a possible link between malnutrition and long term complications. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In 24 Cystic Fibrosis adolescents we studied auxological, nutritional, glycometabolic, endocrine patterns, together with leptin, adiponectin and resistin levels. We selected patients not affected by diabetes, insulin resistance, malnutrition, acute inflammatory states s…
Transporter (TAP)- and proteasome-independent presentation of a melanoma-associated tyrosinase epitope.
2000
The melanosomal protein tyrosinase is considered as a target of specific immunotherapy against melanoma. Two tyrosinase-derived peptides are presented in association with HLA-A2.1 [Wolfel et al., Eur. J. Immunol., 24, 759-764 (1994)]. Peptide 1-9 (MLLAVLYCL) is generated from the putative signal sequence. The internal peptide 369-377 is posttranslationally converted at residue 371, and its presentation is dependent on functional TAP transporters and proteasomes [Mosse et al., J. exp. Med.187, 37-48 (1998)]. Herein, we report on the processing and transport requirements for the signal sequence-derived peptide 1-9 that were studied in parallel to those for peptide 369-377. After infection of …
Reactivity of antitumor coinage metal-based N-heterocyclic carbene complexes with cysteine and selenocysteine protein sites
2021
Abstract The reaction of the antitumor M(I)-bis-N-heterocyclic carbene (M(I)-NHC) complexes, M = Cu, Ag, and Au, with their potential protein binding sites, i.e. cysteine and selenocysteine, was investigated by means of density functional theory approaches. Capped cysteine and selenocysteine were employed to better model the corresponding residues environment within peptide structures. By assuming the neutral or deprotonated form of the side chains of these amino acids and by considering the possible assistance of an external proton donor such as an adjacent acidic residue or the acidic component of the surrounding buffer environment, we devised five possible routes leading to the binding o…
Solitary Necrotic Nodule of the Liver: Different Pathological Findings Express a Different Histogenesis
2008
Solitary necrotic nodule of the liver is a rare benign lesion the histogenesis of which is still debated. We here report the case of a patient who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy for gallstones and who was accidentally found to have a solitary necrotic nodule of 2 cm in the fifth segment of the liver. On the basis of the histological findings, the hypothesis that different pathogenetic mechanisms could be involved in the histogenesis of this lesion is discussed.
Aberrant methylation patterns at the two-cell stage as an indicator of early developmental failure
2002
The fertilized mouse egg actively demethylates the paternal genome within a few hours after fertilization, whereas the maternal genome is only passively demethylated by a replication-dependent mechanism after the two-cell stage. This evolutionarily conserved assymetry in the early diploid mammalian embryo may have a role in methylation reprogramming of the two very different sets of sperm and egg chromatin for somatic development and formation of totipotent cells. Immunofluorescence staining with an antibody against 5-methylcytosine (MeC) showed that the incidence of abnormal methylation patterns differs between mouse two-cell embryos from superovulated females, nonsuperovulated matings, an…
