Quality-of-Life Outcomes in Female Patients With Ileal Conduit or Orthotopic Neobladder Urinary Diversion: 6-Month Results of a Multicenter Prospecti…

2022

Radical cystectomy (RC) often affects patients’ life as this surgery is a traumatic and invasive event for the patients, with drawbacks on their daily, social, working, and sex life. Such changes in the quality of life (QoL) of patients are commonly studied through retrospective clinical evaluations and rarely with longitudinal studies. To date, studies focusing on functional outcomes, sexual function, and health-related QoL for female patients are lacking. We evaluated 37 patients using EORTC QLQ-C30 (QLQ-30) and Short-Form 36 (SF-36) questionnaires, before and after surgery, at 3 and 6 months of follow-up. The mean values for the emotional functioning in QLQ-C30 as well as the mental heal…

Validation of Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte Ratio in a Multi-institutional Cohort of Patients With T1G3 Non–muscle-invasive Bladder Cancer

2018

The aim of this multicenter study was to investigate the prognostic role of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and to validate the NLR cutoff of 3 in a large multi-institutional cohort of patients with primary T1 HG/G3 non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC).

LOCAL MICROWAVE HYPERTHERMIA AND INTRAVESICAL CHEMOTHERAPY AS BLADDER SPARING TREATMENT FOR SELECT MULTIFOCAL AND UNRESECTABLE SUPERFICIAL BLADDER TU…

1998

Purpose: The role of a combined regimen of local hyperthermia and topical chemotherapy in patients with multifocal and recurrent superficial bladder tumors not curable by transurethral resection was evaluated in a neodjuvant organ sparing clinical study. Materials and Methods: A total of 19 patients with multifocal, superficial grades 1 to 3 bladder tumors that recurred after intravesical chemoprophylaxis or immunoprophylaxis underwent local combined administration of microwave induced hyperthermia and intravesical chemotherapy as a debulking approach. Due to extensive superficial involvement of the bladder walls complete transurethral resection of all tumors seemed technically unfeasible i…

Videolaparoscopic cholecystectomy: personal experience

2005

Aim: Laparoscopic cholecystecomy (l.G) is now the gold standard for the treatment of gallstones, In this report were analyzed 153 IX ' performed by it single surgical team and, according to results, elaborated any technical recommendation. Mai i riai s and mi thuds: 153 IX. has been performed in Section of General and Thoracic Surgery of University' of Palermo, Sicily, by a single surgical team, since 2000. Indications for LC were all forms of calculous cholecystitis (biliary colic in 73.2%, acute cholecystitis in 4.5%, gallbladder polyps in 5.8%) or colecystocoledochal Hthiasis (9.8%). The mean age of patients was I9.-/6 years (range 18-78) and 6 2.7%) were female. The patients were studie…

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy in a patient with Steinert myotonic dystrophy. Case report.

2011

Myotonic dystrophy (MD) is a serious multi-systemic autosomal dominant disease. The estimated incidence is 1 in every 8000 births, with an estimated prevalence of between 2.1 and 14.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Signs and symptoms vary from a severe form of congenital myopathy, present from birth and often fatal, to a classic form and a delayed form, which generally presents after the age of 50 and in which the only sign is a cataract and life expectancy is completely normal. We describe the clinical case of a 40-year-old woman with Steinert myotonic dystrophy who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy (under general anesthesia) for symptomatic gallbladder stones. The conduct of anesthes…

Effect of depth of neuromuscular blockade on the abdominal space during pneumoperitoneum establishment in laparoscopic surgery.

2015

To evaluate the effect of neuromuscular blockade (NMB) upon the abdominal space during pneumoperitoneum establishment in laparoscopic surgery, comparing moderate NMB and deep NMB.Prospective, randomized, crossover clinical trial.Operating room.Seventy-six American Society of Anesthesiologists 1 to 2 patients scheduled for elective laparoscopic surgery. Two independent evaluations were performed at the establishment of pneumoperitoneum for a preset intraabdominal pressures (IAPs) of 8 and 12 mm Hg, both during moderate NMB (train-of-four count, 1-3) and deep NMB (posttetanic count,5). Rocuronium was used to induce NMB, and sugammadex was used for reversal. We evaluated (i) the volume of CO2 in…

Changes of inflammatory mediators in obese patients after laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

2010

Background Obesity is associated with the impairment of immunological functions. The aim of this study was to analyze some inflammatory mediators in obese subjects who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Methods Seventeen consecutive female patients with a BMI ranging from 35 to 45 kg/m2 (obese) and 17 consecutive female patients with BMI ranging from 20 to 25 kg/m2 (nonobese) were included in the study. All patients were affected by symptomatic gallbladder stone disease and underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Changes in levels of leukocytes, neutrophils, IL-6, IL-10, leptin, and adiponectin were evaluated. Results We observed a significant increase in leukocyte and neutrophil level…

HCV infection is a risk factor for gallstone disease in liver cirrhosis: an Italian epidemiological survey

2007

We assessed the prevalence of gallbladder disease (i.e. gallstones plus cholecystectomy) among patients with liver disease and its association with the severity and aetiology of hepatic injury. Subjects, referred to 79 Italian hospitals, were enrolled in a 6-month period. The independent effect of the severity and aetiology of liver disease on gallstone disease prevalence was assessed by multiple logistic regression analysis. Overall, 4867 subjects tested anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV) positive alone, 839 were hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg) alone, and 652 had an excessive alcohol intake. The prevalence of gallstone disease was 23.3% in anti-HCV-positive patients, 12.4% in HBsAg pos…

Podoplanin serum and urine concentration in transitional bladder cancer

2016

Background Podoplanin (PDP) is a mucin - a type of transmembrane protein expressed in numerous tissues during ontogeny and in adult animals, including the brain, heart, kidney, osteoblasts and lymphoid organs. Objective The aim of this study was to determine podoplanin concentration in the blood serum and urine of patients with bladder cancer. Quantifying podoplanin concentration and its correlation with various clinicopathological parameters may be useful for more accurate predictions and identifying high-risk patients. Methods The present study included 82 patients with bladder cancer confirmed by transurethral resection or cystectomy and 27 healthy volunteers. The Surface Plasmon Resonan…

Quality of life in patients with bladder cancer undergoing ileal conduit: A comparison of women versus men

2018

Background/Aim: Studies comparing health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) between patients who underwent radical cystectomy (RC) and those who underwent a different form of urinary diversion has not reached yet univocal and reliable conclusions. The aim of our study was to evaluate bladder-specific long-term HR-QoL after radical cystectomy and ileal conduit. Patients and Methods: A multicenter study was carried out on 145 consecutive patients (112 males and 33 females) undergoing RC and ileal conduit (IC). HR-QoL assessment was conducted using Italian versions of European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer QLQ-C30 and EORTC BLM-30 questionnaires. Results: Our data showed that…
