Odontogenic tumors: A study of 120 cases in an Indian teaching hospital

2010

Objective: Studies on odontogenic tumors published from many parts of the world show a distinct geographic variation; however, there is little information available in the English-language literature on the relative frequency of odontogenic tumors in India. This retrospective study was designed to determine the relative frequency of odontogenic tumors in an Indian population and compare them with various reports from other parts of the world. Study design: The histopathology records of the Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology of Government Dental College and Hospital, Mumbai were retrieved retrospectively within the period of January 2001 to July 2010. A total of 120 lesions classi…

Day-3 embryo metabolomics in the spent culture media is altered in obese women undergoing in vitro fertilization

2015

Objective To determine whether the global metabolomic profile of the spent culture media (SCM) of day-3 embryos is different in obese and normoweight women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF). Design Prospective cohort analysis. Setting IVF clinic. Patient(s) Twenty-eight young, nonsmoking women with normoweight, nonsmoking male partners with mild/normal sperm factors undergoing a first IVF attempt for idiopathic infertility, tubal factor infertility, or failed ovulation induction: obese ovulatory women (n = 12); obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS; n=4); normoweight ovulatory women (n = 12). Intervention(s) Fifty μl of SCM collected from two day-3 embryos of each cohort. M…

The epidemiology, treatment, and complication of ameloblastoma in East-Indonesia

2018

Background Ameloblastoma is a neoplasm classified as a benign epithelial odontogenic tumor of the jaws, grow slowly and are locally invasive. The aim of the present study was to investigate the incidence, treatment, and complication of patients with ameloblastoma in East-Indonesia during six years retrospective study. Material and Methods This retrospective study included 84 patients who were diagnosed with ameloblastoma from 2011 to 2016. There were 56 patients with treatment data available. Data from each patient, including gender, age, histologic type, the size of the tumor, radiologic form, tumor location, type of treatment, and complication were reviewed and analyzed retrospectively. R…

Odontogenic tumors: a collaborative study of 218 cases diagnosed over 12 years and comprehensive review of the literature.

2015

Objectives: The objective of this study was to analyze the frequency and distribution of odontogenic tumors (OTs) in the Cappadocia region of Turkey, and to compare the findings with those reported in the literature. Study Design: The records of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Pathology Departments at Erciyes University, with histologic diagnosis of odontogenic tumors (based on the World Health Organization classification, 2005), over a 12-year period, were analyzed. The relative frequency of different types of tumors was also analyzed and compared with the literature. Results: OTs in the present study constituted 2.74% of all the 7,942 registered biopsies. A total of 218 cases of OT…

Paranasal sinuses malignancies: A 12-year review of clinical characteristics

2016

Background Inadequate epidemiologic investigations of the paranasal sinuses malignancies prompted this retrospective study with special emphasis on a major group of 111 tumors. Material and Methods Clinical records of 111 patients with histologically confirmed malignant tumors of the paranasal sinuses were investigated retrospectively from April 2000 to January 2012. Collection of data included demographic information, clinical manifestations, treatment plans, and histopathology of the tumor. Results There were 69 (62.16%) male and 42 (37.83%) female patients (male-to-female ratio of 1.6:1), with a median age of 49±12.2 years (range 21 to 88 years). A high level of occurrence was noticed in…

Incidence rate of metastases in the oral cavity: a review of all metastatic lesions in the oral cavity

2021

Background Metastases in the oral cavity are rare and account for only 1 to 3% of all malignant lesions in this area. The primary location from which most metastases have been described in the oral cavity in adult patients include lungs, breasts, kidneys and colon. Material and Methods A systematic search of the literature was carried out following the PRISMA statement in PubMed database. Clinical trials and case series published in the last 10 years [2010-2020] were eligible to be selected. The headings and keywords used in the searches were “cancer” AND “oral metastases”, “incidence” AND “oral metastases”, “oral metastases” AND “jaw bone”, “oral metastases” AND “soft tissue”. Mild androgen phenotypes.

2006

Mild androgen phenotypes are found in 30-40% of patients referred to an endocrine clinic because of suspected hyperandrogenic syndrome. These disorders are characterized by clinical or biological signs of hyperandrogenism in women with normal ovulatory menstrual cycles. Three main mild androgen disorders may be distinguished: ovulatory polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), idiopathic hyperandrogenism, and idiopathic hirsutism. Ovulatory PCOS includes ovulatory hyperandrogenic patients presenting with polycystic ovaries. Using ESHRE/ASRM criteria for diagnosis of PCOS, this disorder is now part of PCOS spectrum. While in vivo and in vitro studies have confirmed the similarities between the two…

Milder forms of atherogenic dyslipidemia in ovulatory versus anovulatory polycystic ovary syndrome phenotype

2017

BACKGROUND: Dyslipidemia is common in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) but its prevalence in different PCOS phenotypes is still largely unknown. METHODS: We measured plasma lipids and lipoproteins in 35 anovulatory PCOS (age: 25 ± 6 years, BMI: 28 ± 6 kg/m2), 15 ovulatory PCOS (age: 30 ± 6 years, BMI: 25 ± 3 kg/m2) and 27 healthy women (controls) age- and BMI-matched with ovulatory PCOS. PCOS was diagnosed by the presence of clinical or biologic hyperandrogenism associated with chronic anovulation and/or polycystic ovaries at ultrasound. In women with normal menses chronic anovulation was indicated by low serum progesterone levels (<9.54 nmol/l) during midluteal phase (days 21…

Influence of sociocultural factors on the ovulatory status of polycystic ovary syndrome.

2009

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of social and cultural differences inside the same ethnic group on the ovulatory status of women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). DESIGN: To correlate social and cultural status with the phenotypic expression (body weight and ovulation) and with androgen and insulin levels of PCOS. SETTING: University department of medicine. PATIENT(S): Two hundred and forty-four consecutive PCOS women. INTERVENTION(S): All studied patients completed a simple questionnaire to indicate their mean family income and their school education. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Ovulation was assessed by measurement of serum progesterone on day 22 of a spontaneous or induced menstrual cy…

Does ovarian blood flow distinguish between ovulatory and anovulatory patients with polycystic ovary syndrome?

2003

The purpose of this study was to determine whether parameters of ovarian blood flow distinguish between women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) who ovulate and those who are anovulatory. This was a prospectively enrolled trial, carried out as a cross-sectional comparison of 12 ovulatory patients with PCOS and 20 matched subjects with classic PCOS and 10 healthy control subjects. Hormonal parameters and ovarian blood flow by color flow Doppler imaging were obtained in the early follicular phase.Characteristic elevations in luteinizing hormone (LH) and androgens were found in both groups with PCOS compared with control groups. Women with anovulatory PCOS had high insulin levels and lower Q…
