Seasonal cycle of benthic denitrification and DNRA in the aphotic coastal zone, northern Baltic Sea

2020

Current knowledge on the seasonality of benthic nitrate reduction pathways in the aphotic, density stratified coastal zone of the Baltic Sea is largely based on data from muddy sediments, neglecting the potential contribution of sandy sediments. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of seasonality in this part of the Baltic Sea coast, we measured rates of benthic denitrification, anammox and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) monthly in the ice-free period of 2016 in both sandy and muddy aphotic sediments, northwestern Gulf of Finland. No anammox was observed. The seasonal cycle of denitrification in both sediment types was related to the hydrography-driven development …

Cobalt−NHC Catalyzed C(sp2)−C(sp3) and C(sp2)−C(sp2) Kumada Cross‐Coupling of Aryl Tosylates with Alkyl and Aryl Grignard Reagents

2021

The first cobalt‐catalyzed cross‐coupling of aryl tosylates with alkyl and aryl Grignard reagents is reported. The catalytic system uses CoF3 and NHCs (NHC=N‐heterocyclic carbene) as ancillary ligands. The reaction proceeds via highly selective C−O bond functionalization, leading to the corresponding products in up to 98 % yield. The employment of alkyl Grignard reagents allows to achieve a rare C(sp2)−C(sp3) cross‐coupling of C−O electrophiles, circumventing isomerization and β‐hydride elimination problems. The use of aryl Grignards leads to the formation of biaryls. The C−O cross‐coupling sets the stage for a sequential cross‐coupling by exploiting the orthogonal selectivity of the cataly…

SBA-15/POSS-Imidazolium Hybrid as Catalytic Nanoreactor

2019

Supported imidazolium modified polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) on SBA-15 have been used as platform for Pd(II) species. The so-obtained material was firstly characterized by means of TGA, solid state NMR, TEM, XPS, SAXS, porosimetry and ICP-OES and it was successfully tested as pre-catalyst in C−C cross couplings, namely Suzuki-Miyaura and Heck reactions. In both cases, the solid proved to be highly efficient and easily recoverable from the reaction mixture. The recyclability was verified for up to seven cycles without showing any activity decrease. Interestingly, only Pd(II) was detected in the reused catalyst in the Heck reaction. Therefore, the versatility of the material w…

Dehydrogenative Anodic C−C Coupling of Phenols Bearing Electron‐Withdrawing Groups

2019

Abstract We herein present a metal‐free, electrosynthetic method that enables the direct dehydrogenative coupling reactions of phenols carrying electron‐withdrawing groups for the first time. The reactions are easy to conduct and scalable, as they are carried out in undivided cells and obviate the necessity for additional supporting electrolyte. As such, this conversion is efficient, practical, and thereby environmentally friendly, as production of waste is minimized. The method features a broad substrate scope, and a variety of functional groups are tolerated, providing easy access to precursors for novel polydentate ligands and even heterocycles such as dibenzofurans.

A Next‐Generation Air‐Stable Palladium(I) Dimer Enables Olefin Migration and Selective C−C Coupling in Air

2020

Abstract We report a new air‐stable PdI dimer, [Pd(μ‐I)(PCy2 tBu)]2, which triggers E‐selective olefin migration to enamides and styrene derivatives in the presence of multiple functional groups and with complete tolerance of air. The same dimer also triggers extremely rapid C−C coupling (alkylation and arylation) at room temperature in a modular and triply selective fashion of aromatic C−Br, C−OTf/OFs, and C−Cl bonds in poly(pseudo)halogenated arenes, displaying superior activity over previous PdI dimer generations for substrates that bear substituents ortho to C−OTf.

Developments in the dehydrogenative electrochemical synthesis of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethyl-2,2′-biphenol

2021

Abstract The symmetric biphenol 3,3′,5,5′‐tetramethyl‐2,2′‐biphenol is a well‐known ligand building block and is used in transition‐metal catalysis. In the literature, there are several synthetic routes for the preparation of this exceptional molecule. Herein, the focus is on the sustainable electrochemical synthesis of 3,3′,5,5′‐tetramethyl‐2,2′‐biphenol. A brief overview of the developmental history of this inconspicuous molecule, which is of great interest for technical applications, but has many challenges for its synthesis, is provided. The electro‐organic method is a powerful, sustainable, and efficient alternative to conventional synthesis to obtain this symmetric biphenol up to the …

Concise and modular synthesis of regioisomeric haptens for the production of high-affinity and stereoselective antibodies to the strobilurin azoxystr…

2011

The immune response to regioisomeric haptens of azoxystrobin with varied derivatization sites was studied. Based on the Sonogashira and Suzuki-Miyaura couplings and following a straightforward modular design, we have synthesized four haptens with the same linker anchored through C-C bonds and located at different sites of the molecule. The most stereoselective antibodies were produced from immunogens with the spacer arm at a distal position from the β-methoxyacrylate moiety characteristic of strobilurins. Moreover, we observed that assay cross-reactivity was reliant on the functionalization site of the competitor derivative. Finally, the antibody binding site was explored using synthetic ch…

Catechol-Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes as Support for Pd Nanoparticles

2022

Carbon nanotubes have been covalently functionalized with catechol moieties through the formation of the corresponding aryl radicals obtained by reacting 4-aminocatechol with isoamyl nitrite. The functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes have been in turn used to immobilize Pd(II) ions on its surface forming catechol-Pd complexes, which were reduced to Pd nanoparticles (NPs). The so-obtained hybrid material has been characterized by means of thermogravimetric analysis coupled with differential scanning calorimetry (TGA-DSC), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). This latter technique allowed to estimate the nanoparticle size (5.7 +/- 2.8 nm) wh…

Palladium-Based Metal Organic Frameworks as Heterogeneous Catalysts for C-C Couplings

2022

Among the various cross coupling reactions, C−C cross coupling reaction has attracted many researchers to investigate in the last four decades. The continuous, constant, and consistent progress in this field fetched a Noble prize in 2010, showing the importance of this reaction in diversified fields. Among the various transition metals studied for this reaction, Pd is one of the metals that has exhibited the highest activity due to its unique features and reactivity. Although Pd-based homogeneous catalyst was the preferred choice for many researchers, the field slowly diverted towards the development of Pd-based heterogeneous catalysts for C−C coupling reactions. This is obviously due to th…
