2020

This article studies the functioning of Venetian galere da mercato along one of the coastlines where they operated, that of Valencia. The system was known to have seven routes during the XIVth to the XVIth centuries and was used to collect goods at the point of arrival. The first galleys which carne to the port of Valencia (from Flanders) were in 1391, but the most active period was 1450-1534, from Aigues Mortes and Barbary. Analysis of fiscal and notarial records shows that the fleet system operated with the import of textiles, metal and spices and the export of wool, slaves and cloth, though the basic function of the market was the exchange of billion for spices. The market benefited fro…

2020

The increase in late medieval trade favoured the spread of technical developments in sea transport. Valencia, a growing market at this period, also went through significant changes. Closer analysis of the structure and behaviour of trading companies allows us to explore this. Persistence of poor financial resources and a piecemeal strategy in trade, combined with use of local shipping, affected the high number of stops and slowness in transactions.

2020

The bankruptcy of the valencian moneychanger Francesc de Pals, in 1316, was another one in the long sequence of banking failures that happened in the Western Mediterranean Sea, and specially in Valencia, by the end of XIIIth Century. Thc conservation of ths process where his creditors shared out his inheritance is the staring point for a breakdown on the nascent financial world of Valencia only half a Century after its integration to Christian Europe. So, native moneychangers had already developped at this time a business network that included important relations with Italy and the South of France, and they had even settled agents in Seville. The connexion between Francesc de Pals and the m…

2012

Vincent Ferrer used in his sermons many and varied resources to make your message intelligible to its many listeners. One such resource was hunting activities and especially the form of hunting with birds. On the one hand, this activity was provided appropriate elements to construct analogies that facilitate the understanding of the word of God. However, on the other hand, it seems that perhaps other reasons may explain this preference of the speaker, more related to their own experience and the reality of the society to which he was going. And, in addition to the textual sources, father Vincent often drew on his own experience and, indeed, to those aspects of the daily lives of his audienc…

2013

During the late Middle Ages the mobility of people was intense, for various reasons. Frequently, people stayed in hostels, which were abundant in all cities and in the countryside and where they could rest, eat and receive medical care for themselves and their horses. These hostels were favourable environments to the intervention of barbers and surgeons, because many fights resulting in injuries took place there.

1996

The studies about the conquest of Valence by the king Jaume I during the Xlllth century had emphasized the more great participation of the Aragonese nobility rather than the Catalan, so in the war as in the repartition of the land and the seigniories. Also it's affirmed that the Aragonese people remained in the Vanencian country, though the Catalans only came by religious reasons and went back to their land. This paper revises all the royal documents of the chancellery, the donations of the Repartiment and also the chronique of the king Jaume I, and demonstrates the opposed situation. The participation of the catalans nobility in the conquest of Valencia was very important —more than 150 kn…
