Derechos de la viuda en la Valencia foral
2001
This article is about the rights of widows over their deceased husbands’ goods. We can not forget that, because of regulations regarding the separation of properties, these women are in a defenceless situation if they lack their own property, having to depend in most cases on their husbands’ testament. The severity of the system has to be alleviated with dowries, in order that when their husbands die women without inheritance could have at least a certain security. They are in a situation of economic vulnerability, especially grave when their husbands die without property. In this case, the widow’s rights are important in order to ameliorate the economic suffering they experience in their j…
Different approaches to research and innovation in physics education at college and university
2019
Abstract In this article we report a Symposium organized by GTG-Physics Education Research at University (PERU) with different proposals that includes innovative educational approaches and research on problems of teaching-learning physics at university. In the second section, two research projects are described on teaching specific curriculum topics that present special difficulties for students. In the next section the third project on a work experience in the laboratory that takes into account the characteristics of scientific work, is presented. Finally, the fourth project presents a way to investigate the types of student reasoning. In the discussion, the importance of research projects…
Intervenir à titre privé dans la diplomatie de sa cité : l'exemple de la paix de Nicias chez Thucydide
2013
Act on private basis in diplomacy of one’s own city. The example of Nicias’ peace in Thucydides. During the diplomatic exchanges related at the beginning of the fifth book, Thucydides shows two explicit private interventions using words connected with idia. First, two ephores, Cleoboulos and Xenares, make private propositions. Then, an Athenian, Alcibiades sends a private messenger. Whereas these two actions are unique in the fifth book, because Thucydides’ vocabulary is specific, some other citizens express opinions different from the majority decisions. Some of them act against the policy of their City. Self-interest may incite some citizens to participate in civic action, and the private…
Narkotisko un psihotropo vielu diskurss Holivudas filmās: jauniešu realitātes konstruēšana
2016
Association between use of novel glucose-lowering drugs and COVID-19 hospitalization and death in patients with type 2 diabetes: a nationwide registr…
2022
Abstract Aims Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in patients with coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) is associated with a worse prognosis. We separately investigated the associations between the use of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i), glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RA), and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4i), and the risk of COVID-19 hospitalization and death. Methods and results Patients with T2DM registered in the Swedish National Patient Registry and alive on 1 February 2020 were included. ‘Incident severe COVID-19’ was defined as the first hospitalization and/or death from COVID-19. A modified Poisson regression approach was applied to a 1:1 propensity sc…
Modeling Tyrosinase and Catecholase Activity Using New m-Xylyl-Based Ligands with Bidentate Alkylamine Terminal Coordination
2012
Chemical model systems possessing the reactivity aspects of both tyrosinase and catechol oxidase are presented. Using two m-xylyl-based ligands providing bidentate alkylamine terminal coordination, 1,3-bis[(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl)aminomethyl]benzene (L(H,H)) and 1,3-bis[(N,N,N'-trimethylaminoethyl)aminomethyl]benzene (L(Me,Me)), four new dicopper(I) complexes, [Cu(I)(2)(L(H,H))(MeCN)(4)][ClO(4)](2) (1), [Cu(I)(2)(L(H,H))(PPh(3))(2)(MeCN)(2)][ClO(4)](2) (2), [Cu(I)(2)(L(Me,Me))(MeCN)(2)][ClO(4)](2) (3), and [Cu(I)(2)(L(Me,Me))(PPh(3))(2)][ClO(4)](2) (4), have been synthesized and characterized. Complex 2 has been structurally characterized. Reaction of the dicopper(I) complex 3(2+) with diox…
Amino acid substitutions enhancing thermostability of Bacillus polymyxa beta-glucosidase A
1996
Mutations enhancing the thermostability of β-glucosidase A of Bacillus polymyxa, a family 1 glycosyl hydrolase, have been obtained after hydroxylamine mutagenesis of a plasmid containing the bglA gene, transformation of Escherichia coli with the mutagenized plasmid, and identification of transformant colonies that showed β-glucosidase activity after a thermal treatment that inactivated the wild-type enzyme. Two additive mutations have been characterized that cause replacement of glutamate at position 96 by lysine and of methionine at position 416 by isoleucine respectively. The thermoresistant mutant enzymes showed increased resistance to other denaturing agents, such as pH and urea, while …
Role of Solvent on Protein-Matrix Coupling in MbCO Embedded in Water-Saccharide Systems: A Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy Study
2006
AbstractEmbedding protein in sugar systems of low water content enables one to investigate the protein dynamic-structure function in matrixes whose rigidity is modulated by varying the content of residual water. Accordingly, studying the dynamics and structure thermal evolution of a protein in sugar systems of different hydration constitutes a tool for disentangling solvent rigidity from temperature effects. Furthermore, studies performed using different sugars may give information on how the detailed composition of the surrounding solvent affects the internal protein dynamics and structural evolution. In this work, we compare Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy measurements (300–20K) o…
Additive effects of enhanced ambient ultraviolet B radiation and increased temperature on immune function, growth and physiological condition of juve…
2009
Climate change models predict increased ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation levels due to stratospheric ozone depletion and global warming. In order to study the impact of these two environmental stressors acting simultaneously on the physiology of fish, Atlantic salmon parr were exposed, for 8 weeks in outdoor tanks, to different combinations of UVB radiation (depleted and enhanced) and temperature (standard rearing temperature of 14 °C or 19 °C). The immune function (plasma IgM, lysozyme activity and complement bacteriolytic activity), growth (body weight) and physiological condition (haematocrit and plasma protein concentration) of the fish were determined. Increased UVB level, regardless of w…
Study and characterization of polyphenol oxidase from eggplant (Solanum melongena L.)
2011
ABSTRACT: In this study the catecholase and cresolase activities of eggplant polyphenol oxidase (PPO) were investigated. Enzyme activity was determined by measuring the increase in absorbance using catechol as substrate and 3-methyl-2- benzothiazolinone hydrazone (MBTH) as coupled reagent. The effects of substrate specificity, heat inactivation, temperature, pH, and inhibitors were investigated to understand the enzymatic alteration of ready-to-eat preparations. Browning of vegetables was determined through a colorimeter. Decrease of lightness (L*) and increase of color difference values (ΔE*) were correlated with tissue browning. Antibrowning agents were tested on PPO under the same condit…
