COLLARD GREEN (BRASSICA OLERACEA VAR. ACEPHALA) CULTIVATION IN SICILY

2013

Collard greens (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) are a group of plants cultivated for its thick, slightly bitter, edible leaves. As other Brassicaceae, have a good nutritional value as they are a good sources of vitamin C and soluble fiber, and contain various compounds with potent anticancer properties. In order to enhance collard cultivation in Sicily, different planting dates were tested. The research was carried out during 2009-2010 in the experimental field of SAgA Department – University of Palermo. Plants of a Sicilian local cultivar, with high vigor, good emission of side shoots, large and moderately curly leaves and long and strong petiole, were planted in three different periods: …

Comparative Study of the Compressibility of M3V2O8 (M = Cd, Zn, Mg, Ni) Orthovanadates

2022

We report herein a theoretical study of the high-pressure compressibility of Cd3V2O8, Zn3V2O8, Mg3V2O8, and Ni3V2O8. For Cd3V2O8, we also present a study of its structural stability. Computer simulations were performed by means of first-principles methods using the CRYSTAL program. In Cd3V2O8, we found a previously unreported polymorph which is thermodynamically more stable than the already known polymorph. We also determined the compressibility of all compounds and evaluated the different contributions of polyhedral units to compressibility. We found that the studied vanadates have an anisotropic response to compression and that the change in volume is basically determined by the compressi…

Reclutamiento y reclutas en la ciudad de Valencia (1717-1762)

2019

This research aims to analyze recruitment by quintas, Spanish word for recruitment levies by lot, in the city of Valencia and the townships included in its jurisdictional area. The analyzed period began in 1717 with the first levie decreted by king Philip V once the War of Spanish Succession was over. Applied this levie in the kingdom of Valencia, this was the first application of levies by lot. The closing year for the reported period up to 1762, whith the last levy made by king Charles III before the establishment of the annual periodicity for the recruitment process. Procedures with which human contingents claimed to the city of Valencia between the mentioned dates were organized and dis…

The Ph.D.-candidate as an information literate resource: developing research support and information literacy skills in an informal setting

2013

Published version of an article in the journal Liber Quarterly, Open Access This article aims to suggest a new way of developing research support for PhD-candidates. Previous research on the field of research support is greatly focused on librarians’ competencies and how to assist researchers with what they lack in information literacy (IL) skills. There is little focus on collaboration with researchers to achieve a mutual learning outcome in regard to developing research support and IL skills. A socio-cultural view on IL indicates that IL skills are developed in a context, and therefore are situated. A high level of IL in one situation could be regarded as insufficient in another. Therefor…

Multicolor upconversion luminescence of GdVO4:Ln3+/Yb3+ (Ln3+ = Ho3+, Er3+, Tm3+, Ho3+/Er3+/Tm3+) nanorods

2016

Lanthanide-doped GdVO4 nanorods that exhibit upconversion emission under 982 nm excitation have been prepared by a facile room-temperature chemical co-precipitation method followed by a subsequent annealing at temperatures of 600 degrees C, 800 degrees C and 1000 degrees C. Multicolor upconversion emission, including white, was achieved by tuning the concentrations of dopant lanthanide ions (Ho3+, Er3+, Tm3+ and Yb3+) in GdVO4. It is found that four GdVO4 samples emit light with the white chromaticity coordinates of (0.326, 0.339), (0.346, 0.343), (0.323, 0327) and (0.342, 0.340) respectively, under a single-wavelength NIR excitation. These coordinates are very close to the standard equal e…

Beneficial effects of heme oxygenase-1 up-regulation in the development of experimental inflammation induced by zymosan.

2003

Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is part of the integrated response to oxidative stress. This enzyme may exert anti-inflammatory effects in some animal models, although the precise mechanisms are not fully understood. We have examined the role of HO-1 in the inflammatory response induced by zymosan in the mouse air pouch. Zymosan administration induced HO-1 protein expression in leukocytes migrating to exudates, with maximal levels in the late phase of this response (24-48 h). This was accompanied by ferritin induction and bilirubin accumulation, indicating that this enzyme is active in our model. HO-1 expression by zymosan treatment was partly reduced by aminoguanidine, suggesting the participation…

Halogenido ligand exchange synthesis, spectroscopic properties and thermal behaviour of the inorganic–organic hydrogen-bonded network solid [4,4′-H2b…

2014

Abstract Dark-red single crystals of 4,4′-bipyridinium triaquahydrogen(1+) hexabromidorhodate(III) [4,4′-H2bipy][H7O3][RhBr6] (1) have been synthesized by a diffusion-controlled ligand exchange process from rhodium(III) chloride trihydrate and 4,4′-bipyridine dissolved in hydrochloric and hydrobromic acid, respectively. 1 could be considered as an inorganic–organic hydrogen-bonded network solid built up from the inorganic isolated hexabromidorhodate [RhBr6]3− octahedra, organic 4,4′-bipyridinium(2+) [4,4′-H2bipy]2+ and triaquahydrogen(1+) [H7O3]+ cations with nearly symmetrical O⋯O distances. The oppositely charged components in the structure of 1 are bound together by an intricate system o…

Molecular phylogeny of the Notostraca

2012

Abstract We used a combined analysis of one nuclear (28S rDNA) and three mitochondrial markers (COI, 12S rDNA, 16S rDNA) to infer the molecular phylogeny of the Notostraca, represented by samples from the six continents that are inhabited by this group of branchiopod crustaceans. Our results confirm the monophyly of both extant notostracan genera Triops and Lepidurus with good support in model based and maximum parsimony analyses. We used branchiopod fossils as a calibration to infer divergence times among notostracan lineages and accounted for rate heterogeneity among lineages by applying relaxed-clock models. Our divergence date estimates indicate an initial diversification into the gener…

p38 MAPK-dependent shaping of the keratin cytoskeleton in cultured cells

2007

Plasticity of the resilient keratin intermediate filament cytoskeleton is an important prerequisite for epithelial tissue homeostasis. Here, the contribution of stress-activated p38 MAPK to keratin network organization was examined in cultured cells. It was observed that phosphorylated p38 colocalized with keratin granules that were rapidly formed in response to orthovanadate. The same p38p recruitment was noted during mitosis, in various stress situations and in cells producing mutant keratins. In all these situations keratin 8 became phosphorylated on S73, a well-known p38 target site. To demonstrate that p38-dependent keratin phosphorylation determines keratin organization, p38 activity …

COOLING-INDUCED CONTRACTION OF TRACHEA ISOLATED FROM NORMAL AND SENSITIZED GUINEA-PIGS

1991

Fast (−7°C/min) cooling of guinea-pig isolated trachea produced a rapidly developing, transient contraction followed by relaxation. Cooling-induced contraction was dependent on temperature (30, 20 or 10°C) and responses in trachea obtained from actively sensitized guinea pigs were significantly greater (20 and 10°-C) than those observed in normal trachea. Cooling to 20°C was selected for subsequent experiments. Pre-treatment with sufficient concentrations of atropine, clemastine, cromoglycate, indomethacin, or nordihydroguaiaretic acid did not depress contraction to cooling in either normal or sensitized trachea. This indicates a direct effect of cooling. The contraction. produced by coolin…
