OBJECTIVES To investigate the significance of the ice water test in patients with multiple sclerosis and to evaluate a novel ice water test nomogram in a large patient cohort. METHODS A total of 201 ice water tests of patients with multiple sclerosis were retrospectively evaluated. Incontinence episodes in 24 h and sex were correlated with the ice water test. The role of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is well established in the treatment of cancer pain. This class of drugs is considered particularly effective in pain due to somatic mechanisms, although proof of this observation is lacking. To ascertain whether NSAIDs are more effective in specific nociceptive forms of cancer pain, they were administered alone or added to opioids in 32 patients with a sole pain mechanism, somatic pain due to bone metastases (17 patients) or visceral pain (15 patients), respectively. Ultrasonographic evaluation of 213 patients with urinary schistosomiasis in different age groups was performed in an endemic area of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The results were compared with 94 age matched controls without urinary schistosomiasis. In patients the bladder showed thickening of the wall, polypoid lesions of the mucosa and bladder wall, calcifications and urinary retention. Urinary tract obstruction, predominantly unilateral, was demonstrated. The lesions increased in severity with the intensity of infection, parallel to an increase in ova excretion. Sudden death due to cardiac sarcoidosis in a case of suspected homicide

In a case of suspected homicide death due to natural causes — cardiac death (SCD) — was found at autopsy. Despite an extensive replacement of myocardial tissue by sarcoid granulomata there was no history of cardiac dysfunction or preceding symptoms. The transmurally infiltrating granulomata and the concomitant fibrosis were predominantly confluent. They occupied vast areas within the interventricular septum and the adjacent posterior wall of the left ventricle. The only other organs involved were mediastinal lymph nodes, which appeared macroscopically normal.
