Shared online spreadsheets and hidden profiles: Technological effects on dyad decision strategy

2012

We report a study in which dyads use Instant Messaging to agree a preference among a set of three apartments. The information given to participants is partially overlapping, and contains a ''hidden profile'' (HP), such that a single apartment emerges as the best according to an unweighted sum of feature values only if dyad members pool information that is presented to only one of them. When dyads were additionally provided with a shared online spreadsheet, their decision strategy was more likely to be compensatory and relatively exhaustive, even if the distribution of importance among the cues in which the apartments vary meant that a ''fast and frugal'' heuristic such as take-the-best woul…

Bi-objective multi-layer location–allocation model for the immediate aftermath of sudden-onset disasters

2019

International audience; Locating distribution centers is critical for humanitarians in the immediate aftermath of a sudden-onset disaster. A major challenge lies in balancing the complexity and uncertainty of the problem with time and resource constraints. To address this problem, we propose a location–allocation model that divides the topography of affected areas into multiple layers; considers constrained number and capacity of facilities and fleets; and allows decision-makers to explore trade-offs between response time and logistics costs. To illustrate our theoretical work, we apply the model to a real dataset from the 2015 Nepal earthquake response. For this case, our method results in…

Neutron-Induced Effects on a Self-Refresh DRAM

2022

International audience; The field of radiation effects in electronics research includes unknowns for every new device, node size, and technical development. In this study, static and dynamic test methods were used to define the response of a self-refresh DRAM under neutron irradiation. The neutron-induced effects were investigated and characterised by event cross sections, soft-error rate, and bitmaps evaluations, leading to an identification of permanent and temporary stuck cells, single-bit upsets, and block errors. Block errors were identified in different patterns with dependency in the addressing order, leading to up to two thousand faulty words per event, representing a real threat fr…

LOCAL MICROWAVE HYPERTHERMIA AND INTRAVESICAL CHEMOTHERAPY AS BLADDER SPARING TREATMENT FOR SELECT MULTIFOCAL AND UNRESECTABLE SUPERFICIAL BLADDER TU…

1998

Purpose: The role of a combined regimen of local hyperthermia and topical chemotherapy in patients with multifocal and recurrent superficial bladder tumors not curable by transurethral resection was evaluated in a neodjuvant organ sparing clinical study. Materials and Methods: A total of 19 patients with multifocal, superficial grades 1 to 3 bladder tumors that recurred after intravesical chemoprophylaxis or immunoprophylaxis underwent local combined administration of microwave induced hyperthermia and intravesical chemotherapy as a debulking approach. Due to extensive superficial involvement of the bladder walls complete transurethral resection of all tumors seemed technically unfeasible i…

Microwave-Induced Hyperthermia and Cytostatic Agent for Superficial Bladder Cancer

2005

The efficacy and local toxicity of the intravesical combination of microwave-induced hyperthermia with a cytostatic agent in patients affected by superficial bladder cancer is presented. Between 1994 and 2002, two studies were performed on ablative and adjuvant intravesical thermo-chemotherapy. The ablative study demonstrated complete tumor eradication in 88% of patients who should have undergone cystectomy due to diffuse multiple papillary tumors non-responsive TUR and intravescical adjuvant therapy. In a randomized study, comparing adjuvant thermo-chemotherapy vs. standard chemotherapy with mitomycin C, recurrence-free survival analysis at 24 months revealed a significant difference in f…

Impact of portable device restrictions on IEEE 802.16 performance

2008

IEEE 802.16 is a good alternative for fast wireless connection in the next generation portable information devices (PID). However it was not originally designed for portable devices, but mobility was added later to the specification. This means that the lack of resources on portable devices might have a significant impact on which IEEE 802.16 features should be chosen and how they should be used. Proper usage of ARQ can increase the IEEE 802.16 performance but it can also require much resources from PIDs. In this paper we focus on how ARQ features are affected by limited resources on PID and how much the limitations affect on the performance.

Experimental Assessment of the Backoff Behavior of Commercial IEEE 802.11b Network Cards

2007

It has been observed that different IEEE 802.11 commercial cards produced by different vendors experience different performance, either when accessing alone the channel, as well as when competing against each other. These differences persist also when thorough measurement methodologies (such as RF shielding, laptop rotation, etc) are applied, and alignment of the environmental factors (same laptop models, traffic generators, etc) is carried out. This paper provides an extensive experimental characterization of the backoff operation of six commercial NIC cards. It suggests a relevant methodological approach, namely a repeatable, well defined, set of experiments, for such a characterization. …

Analysis of the limitations of WiFi communications managed by the IEEE 802.11 protocol in data transmission in automated power distribution systems

2010

This paper presents a study on the performances of the IEEE 802.11 protocol used in a Medium Voltage networks management system, carried out using a model for the simulation of WiFi chains architectures. The results of the simulations give some practical indications for the use of the IEEE 802.11 protocol also in presence of transmissions characterized by rigid time intervals, for which this protocol is usually not suitable. Finally the whole communications system is presented.

Multi-purpose embedded communication gateway : system design and testbed implementation

2014

Masteroppgave i Informasjons- og kommunikasjonsteknologi IKT590 Universitetet i Agder 2014 This dissertation revolves around developing a multi-purpose embedded communication gateway. The gateway is equipped with multiple communication interfaces including Ethernet, Bluetooth, WiFi, Zigbee, LTE, and it can be configured and utilized for many purposes, such as a failover of an Ethernet cable via 4G in order to maintain the network connectivity. Raspberry Pi circuit board and the operating system Raspbian are selected as the hardware and the software platforms respectively. Different communication interfaces are coordinated by the Raspberry Pi and are configured via Linux scripts according to…
