Consequences of applying new technologies to sources of law (overview)
2020
Technological change has a very significant impact on the functioning of a lawyer. It is not only an advocate, judge, adviser or notary public with a law, but also specialized software in which the law is incorporated. The quality of this software, safety but also the certainty of its correctness is very important for legal certainty and functioning of lawyers. Modern law is not only the text of legal acts or contracts but also IT codes in which the law is incorporated (for example, smart contract). The law is controlled by the courts. The question arises as to who will control the codes in which the law is written. In the EU, only a few countries have recognised this problem when creating …
Changing forest stakeholders’ perception of ecosystem services with linguistic nudging
2019
This paper explores whether the perceptions of forest owners and professionals could be nudged towards more sustainable management practices by adjusting a policy text's metaphorical content. Recent research has demonstrated a link between information interventions and preference change, but there is a need to further explore individuals' reactions to information on forest-based ecosystem services and to link these to the design of policy instruments. We contribute to narrowing this gap by nudging the content of a policy text comparing rotation forest management (RFM) and continuous cover forestry (CCF), and exposing it to forest stakeholders. The research is carried out in Finland, the so-…
When is More Really More? The Effect of Brands on Choice Overload in Adolescents
2021
Research on choice overload with adult participants has shown that the presence of a brand significantly mitigates the phenomenon. The aim of this study is to investigate whether these findings can be expanded to a population of adolescents, where it has already been shown that choice overload occurs in a similar way as adults. We present evidence from two studies that when facing either a large or a small amount of choice options that are associated with brand names, choice overload disappears among adolescents. Conversely, when no brands are associated to the choice options, adolescents report choice overload, that is a greater dissatisfaction, difficulties, and regret with larger (versus…
Third molar surgical difficulty scales: systematic review and preoperative assessment form
2021
Background The main objective of this systematic review was to collect the pre-existing scales for assessing the difficulty of third molar extraction. The secondary objective was to design a proposal for a preoperative evaluation protocol for the difficulty of third molar extraction. Material and Methods Two independent researchers conducted an electronic search in Pubmed (MEDLINE), Cochrane, and Scopus databases during March 2021. Included studies evaluated the prediction of the difficulty of surgical removal of impacted upper or lower third molars using new indices/scales or pre-existing scales with or without modifications. Articles referring to coronectomies or assessing pre-surgical di…
Responsible cognitive digital clones as decision-makers: A design science research study
2022
This study uses a design science research methodology to develop and evaluate the Pi-Mind agent, an information technology artefact that acts as a responsible, resilient, ubiquitous cognitive clone – or a digital copy – and an autonomous representative of a human decision-maker. Pi-Mind agents can learn the decision-making capabilities of their “donors” in a specific training environment based on generative adversarial networks. A trained clone can be used by a decision-maker as an additional resource for one’s own cognitive enhancement, as an autonomous representative, or even as a replacement when appropriate. The assumption regarding this approach is as follows: when someone was forced t…
A cognitive/decision-making model of evaluation for ethical urban and building renewal
2009
Creativity is a strategic factor not only in the production sector, but also for planning, development and management of the city. The physical shape of the city is determined by the plan of buildings and settlements as a whole. Nevertheless, the functional and aesthetical criteria alone are inadequate, if you adopt the view of sustainability. In particular, from biological, ecological and economic points of view, the shape of the sustainable city is the result of a process of creative choice of traditional and innovative forms, materials and technologies that contribute to the quality of buildings and urban ambient. This principle applies a fortiori in cities interested by not-negligible p…

Barriers to Data-Driven Decision-Making Among Online Retailers
2022
This study investigates the barriers to data-driven decision-making among online retailers. The study seeks to deepen the previous knowledge by considering data-driven decision-making as a process and identifying the critical obstacles within its different (6) stages. Qualitative interview data (N=10) collected from Finnish e-commerce professionals are analyzed. The findings show that barriers to data-driven decision-making occur at all stages during the decision-making process. The barriers are mostly related to the employees’ and the management’s expertise in collecting, organizing, analyzing, summarizing, synthesizing, and prioritizing data. In addition, attitudinal, technical, and strat…
Datapackage for national high-resolution conservation prioritisation of boreal forests
2023
This data package concerns the following work: Ninni Mikkonen, Niko Leikola, Joona Lehtomäki, Panu Halme, Atte Moilanen, National high-resolution conservation prioritisation of boreal forests, Forest Ecology and Management, Volume 541, 2023, 121079 ISSN 0378-1127 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.foreco.2023.121079 The overall objective of the work was to develop spatial prioritizations that can assist the forest conservation programme METSO (The Finnish Government 2008; 2014) to make well-informed decisions about acquisition of forests for protection. The results are also aimed to be useful for other actors interested in forest conservation or biodiversity friendly forest management. We focused th…
Information as a determinant of a decision system
2018
The purpose of the article is to describe the considerations of measuring information in the aspect of making decisions. In the last two decades an "informational revolution" has been made that opens the era of computer tools supporting decision-making processes (Internet, mobile telephony). This relatively new information environment includes information, users and systems that enable information processing. In the information environment, the value and quality of information should be taken into account. An important place in the consideration of information is the measurement of information in the aspect of decision-making.
