Algorithms for the Maximum Weight Connected $$k$$-Induced Subgraph Problem

2014

Finding differentially regulated subgraphs in a biochemical network is an important problem in bioinformatics. We present a new model for finding such subgraphs which takes the polarity of the edges (activating or inhibiting) into account, leading to the problem of finding a connected subgraph induced by \(k\) vertices with maximum weight. We present several algorithms for this problem, including dynamic programming on tree decompositions and integer linear programming. We compare the strength of our integer linear program to previous formulations of the \(k\)-cardinality tree problem. Finally, we compare the performance of the algorithms and the quality of the results to a previous approac…

A distributed dynamic load balancer and its implementation on multi-transputer systems for molecular dynamics simulation

1990

Abstract A new and efficient approach is described to the dynamic load-balancing problem which is central in concurrent computing. A transputer-based implementation is tested on a molecular dynamics simulation of spinodal phase separation.

Measuring the gender wage gap—a methodological note

2019

We propose to estimate the Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition by a single-equation model augmented with interactions between the group membership and other predictors. The relative importance of predicto...

Life cycle and housing decisions: a comparison by age cohorts

2013

The use of decomposition methodologies when the involved variable is continuous is not common in the literature. This article uses this methodology, together with other decomposition methodologies, to explain how age can influence on housing decisions. In particular, we use Spanish data to study whether the age of the householder plays a significant role in influencing household decisions with respect to housing tenure and demand. From the comparison of housing decisions between different groups of households classified by the age of the householders, we conclude that age plays the primary role in explaining the gap between households regarding tenure choice, while it shares its importance …

An Augmented Static Olley-Pakes Productivity Decomposition with Entry and Exit Measurement and Interpretation

2015

We develop an augmented Olley–Pakes (OP) decomposition that allows us to examine how entering and exiting firms contribute to the popular OP covariance measure of allocative efficiency. Applying the decomposition to a comprehensive micro-level data, we find that a large part of the OP covariance component can be attributed to entrants and exiting firms. We also build a model of firm dynamics that is consistent with our main empirical results. In the model economy, the standard OP covariance component tends to increase with certain type of distortions because of endogenous changes in firm entry and exit.

Forecasting the pulse

2013

Purpose – The steady increase of data on human behavior collected online holds significant research potential for social scientists. The purpose of this paper is to add a systematic discussion of different online services, their data generating processes, the offline phenomena connected to these data, and by demonstrating, in a proof of concept, a new approach for the detection of extraordinary offline phenomena by the analysis of online data. Design/methodology/approach – To detect traces of extraordinary offline phenomena in online data, the paper determines the normal state of the respective communication environment by measuring the regular dynamics of specific variables in data documen…

On the international co-movement of natural interest rates

2022

Using quarterly data for 10 OECD countries and the Euro area and a Kalman filtering technique, we investigate the international co-movement among natural interest rates. We show that the US is the main source of global spillovers and global/common factors appear to be key drivers of such co-movement. Indeed, global liquidity is a net transmitter of shocks, while quantitative easing (QE) and the US Dollar are net recipients of shocks. We also find that total spillovers among natural interest rates have been rising since the late nineties, spiking at around economic re-cessions, periods of US monetary policy tightening, the global financial crisis and the Eurozone sovereign debt crisis. Online Detection and Removal of Eye Blink Artifacts from Electroencephalogram

2020

The most prominent type of artifact contaminating electroencephalogram (EEG)signals are the eyeblink (EB) artifacts, which could potentially lead tomisinterpretation of the EEG signal. Online detection and removal of eyeblink artifacts from EEG signals are essential in applications such a Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI), neurofeedback and epilepsy diagnosis. In this thesis, algorithms that combine unsupervised eyeblink artifact detection (eADA) with enhanced Empirical Mode Decomposition (FastEMD) and Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) are proposed,i.e. FastEMD-CCA2 and FastCCA, to automatically identify eyeblink artifacts andremove them in an online setting. FastEMD-CCA2 and FastCCA have …

Highly efficient full-wave electromagnetic analysis of 3-D arbitrarily shaped waveguide microwave devices using an integral equation technique

2015

A novel technique for the full-wave analysis of 3-D complex waveguide devices is presented. This new formulation, based on the Boundary Integral-Resonant Mode Expansion (BI-RME) method, allows the rigorous full-wave electromagnetic characterization of 3-D arbitrarily shaped metallic structures making use of extremely low CPU resources (both time and memory). The unknown electric current density on the surface of the metallic elements is represented by means of Rao-Wilton-Glisson basis functions, and an algebraic procedure based on a singular value decomposition is applied to transform such functions into the classical solenoidal and nonsolenoidal basis functions needed by the original BI-RM…
