Combined effect of AAV-U7-induced dystrophin exon skipping and soluble activin Type IIB receptor in mdx mice.

2012

Adeno-associated virus (AAV)-U7-mediated skipping of dystrophin-exon-23 restores dystrophin expression and muscle function in the mdx mouse model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Soluble activin receptor IIB (sActRIIB-Fc) inhibits signaling of myostatin and homologous molecules and increases muscle mass and function of wild-type and mdx mice. We hypothesized that combined treatment with AAV-U7 and sActRIIB-Fc may synergistically improve mdx muscle function. Bioactivity of sActRIIB-Fc on skeletal muscle was first demonstrated in wild-type mice. In mdx mice we show that AAV-U7-mediated dystrophin restoration improved specific muscle force and resistance to eccentric contractions when applied a…

Effects of muscle activation on shear between human soleus and gastrocnemius muscles

2017

Lateral connections between muscles provide pathways for myofascial force transmission. To elucidate whether these pathways have functional roles in vivo, we examined whether activation could alter the shear between the soleus (SOL) and lateral gastrocnemius (LG) muscles. We hypothesized that selective activation of LG would decrease the stretch-induced shear between LG and SOL. Eleven volunteers underwent a series of knee joint manipulations where plantar flexion force, LG, and SOL muscle fascicle lengths and relative displacement of aponeuroses between the muscles were obtained. Data during a passive full range of motion were recorded, followed by 20° knee extension stretches in both pass…

Endocannabinoid Role in Synaptic Plasticity and Learning

2009

Endocannabinoids have recently emerged as versatile modulators of synaptic transmission and can act as retrograde neurotransmitters. As they cannot be stored in synaptic vesicles, endocannabinoid signaling is believed to start ‘on-demand,’ via a stimulus-dependent synthesis from membranous precursors at the postsynaptic site. After synthesis, endocannabinoids bind presynaptically to cannabinoid type 1 (CB1) receptors, leading to a short- or long-term suppression of neurotransmitter release. CB1 receptors are present in a plethora of different synaptic connections in the brain. Electrophysiological and behavioral analyses of mutant mice lacking CB1 receptors and of pharmacologically treated …

Music Therapy as an Effective Intervention in the Treatment of of Depression in a Patient With Korsakoff's Syndrome

2013

The main aim of this study is to demonstrate the efficacy of the Music Therapy intervention and the possibility of influencing positively on depressive symptoms of a patient with this Syndrome making significant improvements in the general condition and in particular on the “activation versus apathy". The Music Therapy approach is mainly based on a sonorous music relationship between the patient and music therapist. Active Music Therapy facilitates the expressive process, increasing communicative-relational abilities and modulation and regulation of emotions. This approach is based on intersubjective psychological theories and allows “affect attunement” moments. After 24 sessions of Music T…

State composers and the red courtiers : music, ideology, and politics in the Soviet 1930s

2007

Venäläisiin arkistolähteisiin pohjaavassa väitöstutkimuksessaan Simo Mikkonen käsittelee Neuvostoliiton poliittisen eliitin ja taiteilijoiden keskinäisiä suhteita 1930-luvulla. Ajanjakso muistetaan Stalinin valtaannoususta ja joukkoterrorista. Taiteiden osalta on puhuttu taiteellisen vapauden alistamisesta poliittisiin päämääriin puolueen pakkokeinojen ja vainon avulla. Mikkonen osoittaa käsityksen osin virheelliseksi: yhtään eturivin säveltäjää ei terrorin aikana lähetetty vankileireille, teloituksista puhumattakaan. Säveltäjistä neuvostoeliittiä Säveltäjien asema muuttui merkittävästi 1930-luvun aikana. Säveltäjien työ ammattimaistui, he nousivat osaksi eliittiä ja heidän elintasonsa kohe…

Brain integrative function driven by musical training during real-world music listening

2017

The present research investigated differences in the brain dynamics of continuous, real-world music listening between listeners with and without professional musical training, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). A replication study was aimed at validating the reliability of the naturalistic approach to studying brain responses to music, wherein the brain signal and the acoustic information extracted from the musical stimulus were correlated. After a successful replication, a series of three studies dealt with differences in integrative brain function during music listening between musicians and nonmusicians. Findings (a) emphasized the crucial role of the distinctive postura…

Frequency and Correlates of Mild Cognitive Impairment in Myasthenia Gravis

2023

Background: Antibodies against acetylcholine receptors (AChRs) can also target nicotinic AChRs that are present throughout the central nervous system, thus leading to cognitive dysfunctions in patients with myasthenia gravis (MG). However, the presence of cognitive impairment in MG is controversial, and the factors that may influence this risk are almost completely unknown. In this study, the frequency of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in MG, as well as the clinical, immunological, and behavioral correlates of MCI in MG were evaluated. Methods: A total of 52 patients with MG underwent a comprehensive assessment including motor and functional scales, serological testing, and neuropsychologi…

O nowy kształt Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej. Z dziejów myśli geopolitycznej Ligi Niepodległości Polski po II wojnie światowej

2020

The Polish Independence League established at the end of 1944 became the political representation of Piłsudski’s adherents in exile. The head office of the PIL was in London, where Piłsudski’s adherents published a bulletin ‘Listy z Londynu’ (Letters from London), and then a magazine ‘Za Wolność i Niepodległość’ (For Freedom and Independence) published irregularly, in which they promoted their political concepts. The establishment of a regional union of states (federation) in Central and Eastem Europę after World War II occupied a prominent place in the political thought of the Marshall’s heirs. They were in favour of political, military and economic integration of the countries in this par…

A comparative analysis of the sustainability of rice cultivation technologies using the analytic network process

2010

Sustainability of local farming systems and technologies is a very important issue that faces notorious measurement difficulties. Multi-criteria methods may help researchers to solve empirical problems in the construction of composite sustainability indicators and in ranking agricultural technologies according to their sustainability. This paper shows how a multi-criteria decision-making technique, the Analytic Network Process (ANP), can be fruitfully employed to this end. Contrary to simpler and hierarchical goal-criteria-alternative approaches, in ANP all the elements in the network can be related in any possible way, which means that a network can incorporate feedback and interdependent …
