Molecular basis of early epithelial response to streptococcal exotoxin: role of STIM1 and Orai1 proteins

Streptolysin O (SLO) is a cholesterol-dependent cytolysin (CDC) from Streptococcus pyogenes. SLO induces diverse types of Ca(2+) signalling in host cells which play a key role in membrane repair and cell fate determination. The mechanisms behind SLO-induced Ca(2+) signalling remain poorly understood. Here, we show that in NCI-H441 cells, wild-type SLO as well as non-pore-forming mutant induces long-lasting intracellular Ca(2+) oscillations via IP(3) -mediated depletion of intracellular stores and activation of store-operated Ca(2+) (SOC) entry. Novel method for determination of tritium depth profiles in metallic samples

Tritium accumulation in fusion reactor materials is considered a serious radiological issue, therefore a lot of effort has been concentrated on the development of radiometric techniques. A novel method, based on gradual dissolution, for the determination of the total tritium content and its depth profiles in metallic samples is demonstrated. Exclusive measurement of quasi-free η-photoproduction from deuterium

Quasi-free photoproduction of eta-mesons from the deuteron has been measured at the tagged photon facility of the Mainz microtron MAMI with the photon spectrometer TAPS for incident photon energies from the production threshold at 630 MeV up to 820 MeV. In a fully exclusive measurement eta-mesons and recoil nucleons were detected in coincidence. At incident photon energies above the production threshold on the free nucleon, where final state interaction effects are negligible, an almost constant ratio of sigma(n)/sigma(p)=0.66+/-0.10 was found. The current study examines the role of action-depicting gestures in conversational turns by focusing on their semantic characteristics and temporal position in relation to their verbal affiliates (action verbs or more complex verb phrases). In a musical ensemble musicians can influence each other’s performance in terms not only of timing but also in other aspects of the performance such as dynamics, intonation, and timbre. The goal of this work is to test whether this influence can be perceived by a listener from an audio recording solely. Le trincee drenanti profonde rappresentano uno dei metodi più efficaci per la mitigazione del rischio da frana, in pendii con falda idrica. Esse sono realizzate mediante pannelli o pali secanti. Il riempimento è costituito di calcestruzzo poroso o materiale granulare. Se le trincee sono adeguatamente “innestate” nel terreno stabile e il materiale di riempimento ha sufficiente resistenza e rigidezza come il calcestruzzo poroso, si ha ulteriore in-cremento di resistenza a taglio per effetto shear keys, oltre a quello derivante dalla riduzione delle pressioni in-terstiziali. Pervious concrete for deep trench drains used to stabilise slopes must simultaneously satisfy many requirements namely adequate hydraulic conductiv-ity adequate shear strength a few days after pour-ing capacity to act as a protective filter for soils in which the drain is installed good resistance to clog-ging and adequate residual hydraulic conductivity. The pervious concrete with appropriated mix-design can effectively satisfy all the abovementioned requirements. If the trenches depth is such that they intersect the sliding surface and if the trenches are adequate-ly "socket" in the layers of stable soil there is a fur-ther increase in shear strength due to the shear keys effect. This latter is in addition to the increase in shear strength resulting from the reduction of inter-stitial pressures that remains the principal scope of the draining trenches. Obviously the increase of shear strength due to the shear keys effect occurs if the trenches are filled with material that have enough strength and stiffness such as the porous concrete. In this case the beneficial effects of the draining trenches on stability are also due to the resistance at the concrete interface of the trench - soils and to the intrinsic resistance of the concrete at the area of the trench intersected by the sliding surface taken into consideration.The increase in resistance due to the shear keys effect can be very significant in relation to the thickness and interspace of the trenches. Results reported in the paper demonstrated that the interface fine grained soil-pervious concrete is higher than the residual shear strength of the soil.
