Decline in sexuality and wellbeing in older adults: A population-based study
2019
Background: Age-related declines in sexuality and increase in mental health complications have been well documented. However, whether these two phenomena are related has not been explored. The present study therefore aimed to investigate associations between a decline in sexuality and markers of mental health and wellbeing. Method: Data were collected in 2012/13 from 2614 men and 3217 women participating in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, a population-representative panel study of older adults (≥ 50 years). Past-year declines in sexual desire, frequency of sexual activities, and sexual function were self-reported. Three markers of wellbeing (depressive symptoms, quality of life an…
Epidemiology of sexual dysfunction in the male population.
2006
Sexual dysfunctions have found an increasing attention in recent epidemiological studies of the ageing male. The purpose of this paper is to review the prevalence of sexual dysfunctions and risk factors based on community samples. Studies have not only demonstrated a strong age-related incline of erectile dysfunction (ED), but also of ejaculatory and orgasmic disorders (particularly a reduced or absent ejaculation). Despite a declining sexual desire, sexual interest remains present in old age. Lower urinary tract symptoms have been identified as strong risk factors for ED along with cardiovascular, metabolic, psychiatric disorders and lifestyle factors. The wide range of prevalence rate est…
Do women have a hidden heat period?
2002
This article aims to throw light on the controversial topic of whether women have a 'heat' period within their menstrual cycle. The majority of publications in this field report, in addition to a periovulatory peak, no changes at all or even rises in male- and female-initiated sexual activity, woman's sexual desire, autosexual activity and sexual arousability, and interpersonal sexual activities during the mid-follicular and late luteal phases. The lack of a distinct pattern of women's sexual behaviour across the menstrual cycle may be explained by the interplay between cyclical endocrine fluctuations and many psychological, social, cultural and environmental factors, as well as the methodo…

The Loss of Male Sexual Desire in Ancient Mesopotamia

After more than fifty years since the last publication, the cuneiform texts relating to the treatment of the loss of male sexual desire and vigor in Mesopotamia are collected in this volume. The aim of the book is to present Mesopotamian medical tradition regarding the so-called nīš libbi therapies. šà-zi-ga in Sumerian, nīš libbi in Akkadian, lit. "raising of the 'heart'", is the expression used to indicate a group of texts intended to recover the male sexual desire. This medical tradition is preserved from the Middle Babylonian period to the Achaemenid one. This broad range testifies to the importance of the transmission of this material throughout Mesopotamian history. The book provides …
Et sant og ekte liv i en falsk og narkoman verden - Begjær, produksjon og identitet i Thure Erik Lunds Myrbråtenfortellinger (1999-2005)
2011
Author's version of an article published in the journal: Edda. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.idunn.no/ts/edda/2011/03/art08 Thure Erik Lund’s Myrbråten stories may be read as grim and funny descriptions of (post)modern Norway – anatomies made by means of highly ideosyncratic style(s). The postmodern condition is ridiculed along with the regressive utopias it engenders. The essay highlights the terms of subject formation in a society where traditional values and social forms have given way to forces of the marked. By way of Deleuze and Guattari’s coupling in L’Anti-Œdipe of schizophrenia, desire and production, it is possible to discern a strategy for emancipation in Myrbr…
Le temps du désir : ontologies de l'imaginaire et de l'affectivité chez Sartre, Merleau- Ponty et Grimaldi
2013
This study aims at confronting the ontologies of the imaginary of Sartre, Merleau-Ponty and Grimaldi. Following the path of a critical assessment of Bergsonism, each of these philosophies develops by granting ontological value to the negative, and through a reconsideration of the meaning of temporality. A new approach of negativity emerges from the reflection on the status of the image and further, upon the relationships between real and imaginary, past and present, conscious and subconscious. Merleau-Ponty and Grimaldi thus reject dialectics of being and nothingness in favour of the idea of a negativity thoroughly penetrating being itself; the first one opening the way for a phenomenologic…
