Abstract The Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line facility at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyvaskyla is currently being re-commissioned as IGISOL-4 in a new experimental hall. Access to intense beams of protons and deuterons from a new MCC30/15 cyclotron, with continued possibility to deliver heavy-ion beams from the K = 130 MeV cyclotron, offers extensive opportunities for long periods of fundamental experimental research, developments and applications. The FAIR[1] facility is an international accelerator centre for research with ion and antiproton beams. It is being built at Darmstadt, Germany as an extension to the current GSI research institute. The SPEDE Spectrometer: Combined In-Beam γ-ray and Conversion Electron Spectroscopy with Radioactive Ion Beams

The SPEDE spectrometer [1] aims to combine a silicon detector, for the detection of electrons, with the MINIBALL γ-ray detection array for in-beam studies employing radioactive ion beams at the HIE-ISOLDE facility at CERN. The setup will be primarily used for octupole collectivity [2] and shape coexistence studies [3, 4] in Coulomb excitation experiments. In the shape coexistence cases the transitions between states of the same spin and parity have enhanced E0 strength [5]. Additionally the 0→0 transitions, typically present in nuclei exhibiting shape coexistence [6], can only occur via E0 transitions, i.e. via internal conversion electron emission.
Iodine determination in food samples using inductively coupled plasma isotope dilution mass spectrometry.

Two different sample treatment methods are used in connection with inductively coupled plasma isotope dilution mass spectrometry for accurate and precise determinations of iodine traces in food samples. 129I-enriched iodate is applied as a spike compound for the isotope dilution step. Extraction of iodine by tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) solution at high temperatures in a closed vessel is one of the sample treatment methods. The other one is a complete decomposition of the sample with a mixture of perchloric acid and nitric acid using microwave assistance. Mechanically stable metal layers for ohmic and blocking contacts on CdZnTe detectors by electroless deposition

CdZnTe detectors are commonly exploited for the detection of gamma rays. However, obtaining mechanical stable, low noise contacts on CdZnTe is still an issue. In particular, ohmic contacts would be preferable for high flux applications. In this work, we show that it is possible to obtain mechanical stable gold contacts by electroless deposition in methanol solution. Moreover, we show that electroless deposited nickel contacts are also mechanical stable and are good candidates for the realization of ohmic contacts on high resistivity CdZnTe crystals.
Charge carrier transport mechanisms in CdZnTe detectors grown by the vertical Bridgman technique

In this work, we report on the results of electrical characterization of CdZnTe (CZT) detectors, with gold electroless contacts, grown by the boron oxide encapsulated vertical Bridgman technique (B-VB), currently produced at IMEM-CNR (Parma, Italy). The detectors, with different thicknesses (1 and 2.5 mm), have the same electrode layout: the anode is a central electrode (2 x 2 mm(2)) surrounded by a guard ring electrode. The cathode is a planar electrode covering the detector surface (4.1 x 4.1 mm(2)). Photon counting arrays with energy resolving capabilities are recently desired for the next-generation X-ray imaging systems. In this work, we present the performance of a 2 mm thick CZT pixel detector, with pixel pitches of 500 mu m and 250 mu m, coupled to a fast and low noise ASIC (PIXIE ASIC), characterized by only the preamplifier stage. A 16-channel digital readout electronics was used to continuously digitize and process each output channel from the PIXIE ASIC, performing multi-parameter analysis (event arrival time, pulse shape, pulse height) at low and high input counting rates (ICRs). In this article, a new efficient and robust approach—the high-resolution microwave imaging system—for early breast cancer diagnosis is presented. The core concept of the proposed approach is to employ a combination of a newly proposed delay-and-sum (DAS) algorithm and the specific absorption rate (SAR) parameter to provide high image quality of breast tumors, along with fast image processing. The new algorithm enhances the tumor response by altering the parameter referring to the distance between the antenna and the tumor in the conventional DAS matrices.
