Organic residues in lake and drinking water from the lagoa de Juturnaíba (região dos lagos - RJ, Brazil)

Various analytical methods for the determination of organic residues in water were applied to samples from the Lagoa de Juturnaíba in the Região dos Lagos, east of Rio de Janeiro. The concentrations of more than 60 pesticides and of different aminopolycarboxylic acids were determined using GC/MS detection, and a GC/MS screening procedure was applied to detect additional compounds. None of the investigated pesticide residues could be detected in the lake water at detection limits of less than 100 ng/L. This thesis is about the control and characterisation of the alignment and orientation of molecules by ultra short laser pulses on a theoretical and experimental approach. Alignment corresponds to a symmetric angular distribution of the molecular axis peaked along the laser field axis, whereas orientation provides an asymmetric distribution favouring one spatial direction. Orientation by sudden two-colour (2+1) pulses is studied extensively for the non resonant case and conditions required for achieving significant orientation are explored. Automatic program for peak detection and deconvolution of multi-overlapped chromatographic signals

Several interlinked algorithms for peak deconvolution by non-linear regression are presented. These procedures, together with the peak detection methods outlined in Part I, have allowed the implementation of an automatic method able to process multi-overlapped signals, requiring little user interaction. A criterion based on the evaluation of the multivariate selectivity of the chromatographic signal is used to auto-select the most efficient deconvolution procedure for each chromatographic situation. This article briefly describes the use of a photon counting system (ARGUS-100) in the detection of low levels of light. The ARGUS-100 was used in determining ATP in cell sections from tumor tissues and in measuring a luminescence-enhanced immunoluminometric assay, using ferritin as the analyte, based on the luminol-peroxide-4-iodophenol reaction with peroxidase as the enzyme. The aim is not so much the presentation of data, but rather to show the potentials of the photon counting camera in increasing our knowledge of the cellular and subcellular levels, as well as lowering the detection limits in already sensitive systems, such as immunoassays.

Leisure time physical activity in individuals with screen-detected type 2 diabetes compared to those with known type 2 diabetes.

Abstract Aims To investigate whether leisure time physical activity (LTPA) characteristics differ between individuals with previously undiagnosed (screen-detected) and those with previously diagnosed (known) type 2 diabetes. Methods A population-based random sample of 1364 (participation rate 61%) men and 1461 (65%) women aged 45–74 years participated in a cross-sectional health examination including an oral glucose tolerance test and physical activity assessment by a self-administered questionnaire. Position-sensitive neutron detector

Abstract A position-sensitive neutron detector has been developed for use in nuclear physics research. The detector consists of a ∅5.5 cm×100 cm long quartz tube filled with liquid scintillator viewed from both ends by photomultipliers and enclosed in a light-tight titanium container. The properties of the detector were determined both experimentally and by Monte Carlo simulations (EFEN code). A time resolution of 0.4 ns was reached resulting in the position resolution of less than 4 cm. The neutron registration efficiency varies from 36% to 20% within neutron energy range 1–10 MeV and is practically independent of the position along the detector length. Neutron fluence spectrometry using disk activation

Abstract A simple and robust detector for spectrometry of environmental neutrons has been developed. The technique is based on neutron activation of a series of different metal disks followed by low-level gamma-ray spectrometry of the activated disks and subsequent neutron spectrum unfolding. The technique is similar to foil activation but here the applied neutron fluence rates are much lower than usually in the case of foil activation.
