Stability of charge-pump phase-locked loops : the hold-in and pull-in ranges

2020

The problem of design and analysis of synchronization control circuits is a challenging task for many applications: satellite navigation, digital communication, wireless networks, and others. In this article the Charge-Pump Phase-Locked Loop (CP-PLL) electronic circuit, which is used for frequency synthesis and clock generation in computer architectures, is studied. Analysis of CP-PLL is not trivial: full mathematical model, rigorous definitions, and analysis still remain open issues in many respects. This article is devoted to development of a mathematical model, taking into account engineering aspects of the circuit, interpretation of core engineering problems, definition in relation to m…

HARD X-RAY CZT DETECTOR DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING ON STRATOSPHERIC BALLOON PAYLOADS

2009

We report on the R&D activities on the development of room temperature semiconductor detectors (CZT detectors) for high energy space instrumentation. Our groups have been involved in the development of new hard X and soft gamma ray telescopes (e.g. Laue lens telescopes) and focal plane detectors. We present the characteristics and the performance of various CZT detector prototypes coupled with custom read-out electronics. The main target of this R&D activity is an end to end system for domestic growth CZT crystals, new sensor configurations and related read out architecture to provide an effective 3D focal plane able to perform contemporaneously imaging (spatial resolution mm or better), ti…

Advances in High-Energy-Resolution CdZnTe Linear Array Pixel Detectors with Fast and Low Noise Readout Electronics

2023

Radiation detectors based on Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) compounds are becoming popular solutions thanks to their high detection efficiency, room temperature operation, and to their reliability in compact detection systems for medical, astrophysical, or industrial applications. However, despite a huge effort to improve the technological process, CZT detectors’ full potential has not been completely exploited when both high spatial and energy resolution are required by the application, especially at low energies (<10 keV), limiting their application in energy-resolved photon counting (ERPC) systems. This gap can also be attributed to the lack of dedicated front-end electronics whic…

FPGA implementation of a deep learning algorithm for real-time signal reconstruction in particle detectors under high pile-up conditions

2019

The analog signals generated in the read-out electronics of particle detectors are shaped prior to the digitization in order to improve the signal to noise ratio (SNR). The real amplitude of the analog signal is then obtained using digital filters, which provides information about the energy deposited in the detector. The classical digital filters have a good performance in ideal situations with Gaussian electronic noise and no pulse shape distortion. However, high-energy particle colliders, such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, can produce multiple simultaneous events, which produce signal pileup. The performance of classical digital filters deteriorates in these conditions sinc…

A chamber to test the response of radon detectors to changing environmental conditions.

2011

Radon risk assessment is carried out with accurate measurements with active or passive instrumentation. All radon detectors must be calibrated and tested using a radon chamber containing a known concentration of radon produced by specific sources of 226Ra. Some of the chambers can also be used to test the response of detectors as a function of environmental conditions. In this case, it can be inferred a calibration curve with respect to changing of the parameter considered. For this aim, a new chamber radon was designed and realized to perform both calibration of instruments and to study the detector response in a large range of variation of the environmental parameters (pressure, 700 - 110…

The TileCal Optical Multiplexer Board 9U

2011

Abstract TileCal is the hadronic calorimeter of the ATLAS experiment at LHC/CERN. The system contains roughly 10,000 channels of read-out electronics, whose signals are gathered and digitized in the front-end electronics and then transmitted to the counting room through two redundant optical links. Then, the data is received in the back-end system by the Optical Multiplexer Board (OMB) 9U which performs a CRC check to the redundant data to avoid Single Event Upsets errors. A real-time decision is taken on the event-to-event basis to transmit single data to the Read-Out Drivers (RODs) for processing. Due to the low dose level expected during the first years of operations in ATLAS it was deci…

ATLAS beam test results

1996

Many different configurations of electronics and-semiconductor strip detectors were studied in 1995 using the ATLAS tracking detector test area at the H8 beam-line of the CERN SPS. A significant fraction of these investigations are presented elsewhere in this volume and this paper will concentrate on the results with silicon strip detectors read out with electronics preserving the pulse height information. Data has been collected with the ADAM, APV5 and FElix read-out chips on a number of different detectors. The first results are presented for read out with LHC electronics of detectors to the ATLAS-A specification of 112.5 mu m pitch, employing n-strips in n-type silicon, capacitive coupli…

Evaluation of Cardiac Volumetric and Functional Parameters

2012

The milestone definition of “Cardiac Function” has to be attributed to William Harvey, the discoverer of the circulation, who in 1628 stated: “The movement of the blood is constantly in a circle, and is brought about by the beat of the heart” [1, 2]. From a modern point of view, the main function of the heart is the delivery of oxygen to metabolizing tissues. Since oxygen delivery is dependent on (1) the oxygen-carrying capacity of blood, (2) the flow output from the heart, and (3) regional distribution of flow, then the heart is nowadays regarded as a pump with the function of supplying flow in blood vessels [2].

Experimental results from Al/p-CdTe/Pt X-ray detectors

2013

Recently, Al/CdTe/Pt detectors have been proposed for the development of high resolution X-ray spectrometers. Due to the low leakage currents, these detectors allow high electric fields and the pixellization of anodes with the possibility to realize single charge carrier sensing detectors. In this work, we report on the results of electrical and spectroscopic investigations on CdTe diode detectors with Al/CdTe/Pt electrode configuration (4.1×4.1×0.75 and 4.1×4.1×2 mm3). The detectors are characterized by very low leakage currents in the reverse bias operation: 0.3 nA at 25 °C and 2.4 pA at -25 °C under a bias voltage of -1000 V. The spectroscopic performance of the detectors at both low and…
