The role of the ergosphere in the Blandford-Znajek process
2012
The Blandford-Znajek process, one of the most promising model for powering the relativistic jets from black holes, was initially introduced as a mechanism in which the magnetic fields extract energy from a rotating black hole. We study the evolution of force-free electromagnetic fields on regular spacetimes with an ergosphere, which are generated by rapidly rotating stars. Our conclusive results confirm previous works, claiming that the Blandford-Znajek mechanism is not directly related to the horizon of the black hole. We also show that the radiated energy depends exponentially on the compactness of the star.
Molecular Electron Density Theory: A Modern View of Reactivity in Organic Chemistry
2016
A new theory for the study of the reactivity in Organic Chemistry, named Molecular Electron Density Theory (MEDT), is proposed herein. MEDT is based on the idea that while the electron density distribution at the ground state is responsible for physical and chemical molecular properties, as proposed by the Density Functional Theory (DFT), the capability for changes in electron density is responsible for molecular reactivity. Within MEDT, the reactivity in Organic Chemistry is studied through a rigorous quantum chemical analysis of the changes of the electron density as well as the energies associated with these changes along the reaction path in order to understand experimental outcomes. St…

COMPOSITION OF REFUSE DERIVED FUELS IN LATVIA AND ESTONIA IN COMPARISION WITH WORLDWIDE AVERAGE VALUES
2019
Information about composition of RDF worldwide was collected using literature analysis. RDF samples produced in Latvia and Estonia were collected, those fractional and elemental composition analyzed using standard methods. Comparing obtained results with worldwide data we have found that the quality of local RDFs in general is higher than typical values, while elevated content of chlorine must be mentioned as a problem. Results also show that majority of chlorine in studied samples exists in organic form. Recommendations to overcome this problem have been developed.
Light and electron microscopical demonstration of methylene blue accumulation sites in taste buds of fish and mouse after supravital dye injection
1995
Electron microscopical data regarding methylene blue staining of taste buds in the epithelia of the goldfish lip and the cirumvallate papilla of the mouse tongue after supravital dye application are presented for the first time. The ultrastructural details were compared with the corresponding light microscopical findings. The dye was applied in different concentrations by injection or in crystalline from directly to the surface of the tissues. Both methylene blue and tissue were simultaneously fixed by immersion in a paraformaldehyde-glutaraldehyde solution with the addition of phosphomolybdic acid. The ensuing dye precipitate was further stabilized by ammonium heptamolybdate. On the light …
Brief remote intervention to manage food cravings and emotions during the Covid-19 pandemic: a pilot study
2022
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic people have endured potentially stressful challenges which have influenced behaviors such as eating. This pilot study examined the effectiveness of two brief interventions aimed to help individuals deal with food cravings and associated emotional experiences. Participants were 165 individuals residing in United Kingdom, Finland, Philippines, Spain, Italy, Brazil, North America, South Korea, and China. The study was implemented remotely, thus without any contact with researchers, and involved two groups. Group one participants were requested to use daily diaries for seven consecutive days to assess the frequency of experience of their food cravings, frequ…

A theoretical study on NHC-catalysed enantioselective cycloaddition of ketenes and 3-aroylcoumarins: mechanism and enantioselectivity.
2018
NHC-catalysed enantioselective cycloaddition of ketenes to 3-aroylcoumarins to yield dihydrocoumarin-fused dihydropyranones has been investigated using DFT methods at the B3LYP/6-31G* and MPWB1K/6-311G** computational levels. Two plausible mechanisms have been studied: the “ketene-first” mechanism A and the “coumarin-first” mechanism B. An analysis of the activation Gibbs free energies involved in the two competitive pathways makes it possible to rule out the pathway associated with the “coumarin-first” mechanism B. The first step of the “ketene-first” mechanism A is the formation of zwitterionic intermediate IN1-Zvia a nucleophilic attack of NHC 1 on ketene 2. A [4 + 2] cycloaddition throu…
The analysis of endurance, speed and explosive strength in young football players
2011
Introduction Endurance, speed and explosive strength are determinant factors of sporting performance for football players (Hoff & Helgerud, 2004). An evaluation of these abilities is fundamental in young subjects, who have still not completed their maturation, to plan an individualised and effective training program (Fernandez-Gonzalo et al., 2010). The aim of this study was to examine the level of variability in endurance, speed and explosive strength of lower limbs among young football players. Methods Sixteen male players with 5 years of experience playing football and participating in the “Giovanissimi Regionali” amateur championship (14.00 years old ± 7 months; 57.5 ± 6.66 kg weight, 1…
PVDF based vibration measurements and their correlation with torque estimation in a FOC induction motor drive
2008
This paper presents a study concerning the vibrations generated by an induction motor drive controlled by field oriented control algorithm (FOC). The aim of the study is to identify suitable measurement points and analysis techniques in order to achieve information about vibration generated by an electric drive. Vibrations take origin both by the torque generated by the motor and the motor supply through an inverter, then they are transmitted to neighbouring structures. Torque is estimated on the basis of the estimated flux linkage; vibrations have been both measured and analysed numerically by FEM at two points of the cradle. The numerical and experimental analysis have been carried out fo…
