Ajatuksia koulutusviennistä – mahdollisuudet ja riskit vaakakupissa

2015

Cannabinoid control of brain bioenergetics: Exploring the subcellular localization of the CB1 receptor

2014

Brain mitochondrial activity is centrally involved in the central control of energy balance. When studying mitochondrial functions in the brain, however, discrepant results might be obtained, depending on the experimental approaches. For instance, immunostaining experiments and biochemical isolation of organelles expose investigators to risks of false positive and/or false negative results. As an example, the functional presence of cannabinoid type 1 (CB1) receptors on brain mitochondrial membranes (mtCB1) was recently reported and rapidly challenged, claiming that the original observation was likely due to artifact results. Here, we addressed this issue by directly comparing the procedures…

Translating Transculturality: Mediation of Identity in John Rabe’s Diaries

2019

Along with people’s movement and technology, local and foreign components in language and culture become interconnected. Hence translation and cultural studies need approaches, beyond the national, to fuzzy linguistic and cultural forms. One such case originates from the Nanking Massacre, which occurred in the East Asian theatre of WWII. John Rabe, a businessman from Hamburg and a foreign resident in Nanking, was elected by the International Committee for the Nanking Safety Zone to be its chairman. His humanitarian efforts eventually won him a special cultural identity, «the Living Buddha». This article focuses on mediation of identity. It presents «translating transculturality» as a new re…

Efficacy and safety study of an eyelid gel after repeated nocturnal application in healthy contact lens users and non-users

2020

Purpose: To evaluate skin biocompatibility of a nighttime hydrating eyelid gel and possible ocular surface effects in contact lens users (CLU) and non-contact lens users (NCLU). The formulation is registered as a medical device as Tridocosahexaenoine-AOX® (TDHA-AOX) (a concentrated DHA triglyceride), containing also hyaluronic acid (HA). Methods: A prospective, randomized, masked clinical trial was performed with 62 participants of both sexes, aged 20–70 years, split into: (1) CLU (n = 30) and (2) NCLU (n = 32). All participants were instructed to apply a single dose of the moisturizing gel (containing TDHA-AOX and HA) nightly to the upper and inner eyelids of their right eye (RE) only, and…

Aeromonas hydrophila subsp. dhakensis isolated from feces, water and fish in Mediterranean Spain.

2012

Eight Aeromonas hydrophila-like arabinose-negative isolates from diverse sources (i.e., river freshwater, cooling-system water pond, diseased wild European eels, and human stools) sampled in Valencia (Spain) during 2004-2005, were characterized by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and extensive biochemical testing along with reference strains of most Aeromonas species. These isolates and all reference strains of A. hydrophila subsp. dhakensis and A. aquariorum showed a 16S rRNA sequence similarity of 99.8-100%, and they all shared an identical phenotype. This matched exactly with that of A. hydrophila subsp. dhakensis since all strains displayed positive responses to the Voges-Prokauer test and to t…

The ambivalent action of the anti-cancer agent 5-Fluorouracil on myeloid derived suppressor cells under control of docosahexaenoic acid : Role of NLR…

2018

A limitation to 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) anti-cancer efficacy relies on the secretion of IL-1β by myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) according to a previous pre-clinical report. The release of mature IL-1β originates from 5 FU mediated NLRP3 activation with increased caspase-1 activity in MDSC and sustains tumor growth recovery in 5 FU treated mice. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) belongs to omega-3 fatty acid family and harbors both anti cancer and anti inflammatory properties which might could improve 5 FU chemotherapy. Here, we demonstrate that DHA inhibits 5 FU induced IL 1β secretion produced by a MDSC cell line (MSC-2). In tumor-bearing mice treated with 5 FU, we showed that a DHA enrich…

Acute myocardial effects of mitoxantrone in the rabbit

1987

Some clinical studies that were performed for the purpose of assessing the potential cardiotoxicity of mitoxantrone (DHAD) have shown that repeated administrations of the drugs in some patients cause a mild impairment of cardiac functions and morphological changes in the myocardial cells qualitatively similar to those elicited by anthracyclines. Since doxorubicin has been reported to cause acute cardiac effects, probably related to its chronic cardiotoxicity, experiments were carried out on the rabbit heart to investigate whether DHAD is also able to induce acute cardiac effects. Our results show that this drug caused a reversible dose-related impairment of cardiac contractility on the isol…
