Transcatheter embolization of a renal artery pseudoaneurysm after open partial nephrectomy.

Twelve days after an open partial nephrectomy, a 31-year-old man was re-admitted urgently for acute lumbar pain. An emergent helical computed tomography scan with intravenous contrast revealed a 3-cm renal artery pseudoaneurysm at the site of the partial nephrectomy, which was responsible for a large perirenal hematoma. Transarterial hyperselective embolization successfully occluded the pseudoaneurysm with less than 1 mL of N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate, an embolizing agent less costly than coils. The kidney parenchyma was fully preserved.

Background: Erythropoietin (EPO) is a cytokine primarily involved in the regulation of erythropoiesis. In response to hypoxia–ischemia, hypoxia-inducible factor 1 induces EPO production, which, in turn, inhibits apoptosis of erythroid progenitor cells. By the same mechanism and acting through other signaling pathways, EPO exerts neuroprotective effects. There is a lack of information on the characteristics of patients with chronic hepatitis C virus infection (HCV) who fail to respond to antiviral treatment. We studied HCV-positive subjects with chronic liver diseases treated with pegylated-interferon (PEG-IFN) and ribavirin (RBV) who failed to clear HCV in routine clinical practice. A total of 2150 consecutive adult patients treated with PEG-IFN plus RBV therapy in 46 Italian centres between 1 July 2004, and 30 June 2005, were studied. An increase of retrobulbar adipose tissue has been shown by imaging techniques in patients with Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO). Immunohistochemical staining was applied to investigate the involvement of different retrobulbar (especially adipose) tissue components in the autoimmune process of the disease. Cryostat sections from retrobulbar tissues of 15 GO patients and 11 controls were analyzed with a battery of monoclonal antibodies against CD2, CD4, CD8, CD11a, CD19/22, CD25, CD54, CD57, CD68, C3b, HLA-A, B, C, and HLA-DR.
