Formation of N-methylnicotinamide in the brain from a dihydropyridine-type prodrug
1999
The enhancement of brain choline levels is a possible therapeutic option in neurodegenerative diseases; however, brain choline levels are held within narrow limits by homeostatic mechanisms including the rapid clearance of excess choline from the brain. The present study tests whether N-methylnicotinamide (NMN), an inhibitor of the outward transport of choline from the brain, can elevate brain choline levels in vivo. As NMN does not cross the blood-brain barrier, we synthesized and administered the brain-permeable prodrug, 1,4-dihydro-N-methyl-nicotinamide (DNMN), and tested its effect on the levels of NMN and choline in brain extracellular fluid, using the microdialysis procedure. Administ…
Monitorización de la vacomicina en administración intraperitoneal en pacientes sometidos a diálisis peritoneal continua ambulatoria
2012
Objective: To validate a pharmacokinetic model of the treatments with intraperitoneal vancomycin applied to patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis with bacterial peritonitis. Methods: To carry out a prospective study divided in 2 cohorts: the first one including ten patients of 56 ± 14 years and 65 ± 5 kg, and the second one with 10 patients (12 episodes of peritonitis) aged 52 ± 13 years and 64 ± 8 kg. The treatment consists of administering and retaining for 6 h in the peritoneal cavity a solution containing 2 g of vancomycin and 1 g of ceftazidime into 2 l of ‘‘dialysis solution’’. After the antibiotic administration, blood samples were obtained at 4, 6, 8, 10, 24, 48 and …
Approach of the State Pharmacopeia of Ukraine to analytical procedures validation on the example of chloride ions assay in peritoneal dialysis soluti…
2019
The objective of this study was to develop and validate an alternative analytical procedure for the total chloride assay in solutions for peritoneal dialysis (PD). The proposed analytical procedure was validated according to the requirements of the International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) Guideline: Topic ICH Q2(R1) and the approach of the State Pharmacopeia of Ukraine (SPU). The analytical procedure was specific. The li-nearity of the procedure was evaluated in the concentration range of 76 to 114 mmol/L of chloride ions (80-120% of the stated content (95 mmol/L)) with the regression equation y = 1.0029 ∑ X -0.2269 and a correlation coefficient of 0.9989. The y-intercept of the regr…
Experimental investigation and modelling of diffusion dialysis for the recovery of waste acid solutions
2018
Pickling is widely used as a chemical pre-treatment method for cleaning metal surfaces before other surface treatments and it consumes large amount of acids and water
Experimental investigation and modelling of diffusion dialysis process for regeneration of acidic pickling solutions
2017
Pickling is one of the key steps in metal finishing industries, where HCl solutions are largely used thus generating significant amounts of spent waste solutions containing high concentrations of metals and acid. The recovery of acid from such waste solutions is thus one of the most beneficial steps for reducing the environmental and economical impact of these processes. Among several separation methods, diffusion dialysis (DD) is becoming more and more attractive thanks to the recent important advances in ion exchange membranes (IEMs) field and because of its clean nature and operational simplicity, low installation and operating costs and low energy consumption [1,2]. In the present work,…
Effective recovery of HCl and metals from pickling solutions by cutting-edge membrane technologies
2018
The pickling process is an essential step in the hot-dip galvanizing process. It is performed by immersing manufacturedsteel pieces inacid bathsin order todissolve the oxidized layers. During the pickling process, acid attacks metal oxides on the surface, dissolving them in the pickling bath. Thus, the efficiency of the pickling liquor decreases due to the accumulation of metal salts and the consumption of free acid in the solution. When hydrochloric acid is used, ferrous chloride is producedduring the pickling treatment, reaching concentrations up to 250 g/l, while the acid concentration decreases by 75-85%. A pickling bath in this condition is considered spent [1] due to thevery low picklin…
The REAPower Project
2019
Abstract Reverse electrodialysis technology has grown significantly in the last decade, gaining a fast increase in its technology readiness level and presenting some interesting examples of pilot systems operating under very different real environments. Among these, one was able to operate in a saltwork in Marsala (Sicily, Italy) with real concentrated brine and real saline waters (i.e., either seawater or brackish water), producing electric power in the order of 1 kW. This pilot plant was one of the main achievements of the European REAPower research project. This chapter presents an overview of the main research efforts and results achieved in the framework of this project starting from t…
Cathodic abatement of Cr(VI) in water by microbial reverse-electrodialysis cells
2015
Abstract For the first time a microbial reverse electrodialysis cell (MRC) was used for the treatment of water contaminated by Cr(VI). It has been recently shown that both inorganic and organic pollutants can be removed by reverse electrodialysis processes (RED) using water with different salinity without the supply of electric energy. However, a high number of membrane pairs is usually necessary for the treatment of wastewater by RED. Here, it was showed that a lower number of membranes can be used by the utilization of a MRC (i.e., a RED cell with a biotic anode) for such purposes. Indeed, the abatement of Cr(VI), chosen as model pollutant, was successfully achieved by cathodic reduction …
Novel poly (ionic liquid)-based anion exchange membranes for efficient and rapid acid recovery from industrial waste
2020
Abstract Owing to the less energy consumption, positive impact on the environment, and prospect of providing clean water resources, anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are promising materials for acid recovery from various industrial wastewater/effluent. Based on the diffusion dialysis process, AEMs selectively allow rapid proton permeation while efficiently retaining metal ions. To enhance the efficiency of the acid recovery process, precise control of macromolecular architecture and chemical composition that enables high hydrophilicity, proton conductivity through the membrane, and ion exchange capacity is required. In this direction, we report on the one-step fabrication of novel poly (ionic…
CFD prediction of concentration polarization phenomena in spacer-filled channels for Reverse Electrodialysis
2014
Abstract Salinity Gradient Power generation through Reverse Electrodialysis (SGP-RE) is a promising technology to convert the chemical potential difference of a salinity gradient into electric energy. In SGP-RE systems, as in most membrane processes, concentration polarization phenomena may affect the theoretical driving force and thus the performance of the process. Operating conditions, including the feed solution flow rate and concentration and the channels׳ geometrical configuration, may greatly influence both the polarization effect and the pumping energy consumption. The present work uses CFD to investigate the dependence of concentration polarization and pressure drop on flow rate, f…
