Social integration of Ethiopian and Eritrean women in Switzerland through informal sport settings

2021

This study investigated the role of informal sport settings (i.e. self-organised and non-voluntary sports clubs) in the social integration of Ethiopian and Eritrean women into Swiss society. Social integration seen as a multidimensional, interdependent process between the interaction of social bond, bridge and links; and two-way interaction between the migrant and local community. Thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions (n=12, 1851years old) was used to understand the interplay between social integration and participation in informal sport settings. The findings indicated that such settings have become a crucial sphere for establishing and reb…

Meridianos tendinomusculares (Jīng Jīn) y tejido fascial, comparativa anatómica y funcional

2016

The description of the pathways of the Jīng Jīn meridians is based on empirical observations carried out more than 2000 years ago, and though historical records have shown their possible anatomical basis, nowadays these energetic pathways lack a solid scientific base from the biomedical standpoint. Nonetheless, the comparison between the pathways and function of the Jīng Jīn with the new insights regarding contributions to anatomy and physiology of the fascial system brought from western medicine allows for meeting points and closer relations between the two areas of knowledge. Physiologically, both the Jīng Jīn and the fascial system participate in common structural, biomechanical, integra…

Telomere Length, SIRT1, and Insulin in Male Master Athletes: The Path to Healthy Longevity?

2021

AbstractLower SIRT1 and insulin resistance are associated with accelerated telomere shortening. This study investigated whether the lifestyle of master athletes can attenuate these age-related changes and thereby slow aging. We compared insulin, SIRT1, and telomere length in highly trained male master athletes (n=52; aged 49.9±7.2 yrs) and age-matched non-athletes (n=19; aged 47.3±8.9 yrs). This is a cross-sectional study, in which all data were collected in one visit. Overnight fasted SIRT1 and insulin levels in whole blood were assessed using commercial kits. Relative telomere length was determined in leukocytes through qPCR analyses. Master athletes had higher SIRT1, lower insulin, and l…

Sportomics in professional soccer players: metabolomics results during preseason.

2021

BACKGROUND Sportomics is the application of metabolomics to study the metabolism shifts of individuals that practice sports or do physical exercise. This aim was reached by the analysis of low molecular weight metabolites (<1.5 kDa) present in biological fluids such as blood, saliva or urine. METHODS In this study, authors performed a 1H-NMR analysis of urine from 21 professional soccer players collected at 3 different time points during the preseason preparation period before the beginning of Serie A Championship (first division) in Italy. RESULTS Urine profile changed during the observational period. In particular, significant variations were observed for trimethylamine-N-oxide, dimethyla…

2020

BACKGROUND Women experience drastic hormonal changes during midlife due to the menopausal transition. Menopausal hormonal changes are known to lead to bone loss and potentially also to loss of lean mass. The loss of muscle and bone tissue coincide due to the functional relationship and interaction between these tissues. If and how physical activity counteracts deterioration in muscle and bone during the menopausal transition remains partly unresolved. This study investigated differences between premenopausal, early perimenopausal, late perimenopausal, and postmenopausal women in appendicular lean mass (ALM), appendicular lean mass index (ALMI), femoral neck bone mineral density (BMD) and T …

Infrared microspectroscopic determination of collagen cross-links in articular cartilage

2017

Collagen forms an organized network in articular cartilage to give tensile stiffness to the tissue. Due to its long half-life, collagen is susceptible to cross-links caused by advanced glycation end-products. The current standard method for determination of cross-link concentrations in tissues is the destructive high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The aim of this study was to analyze the cross-link concentrations nondestructively from standard unstained histological articular cartilage sections by using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) microspectroscopy. Half of the bovine articular cartilage samples ( n = 27 ) were treated with threose to increase the collagen cross-linking whi…
