Gingival calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor: case report and review of the literature comprising a period of 44 years

2011

Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumors are rare odontogenic neoplasms that account for approximately 1% of all odontogenic tumors. The extraosseous variant is extremely rare, with only few cases being described in the literature. To our knowledge, only 22 cases have been reported over a period of 44 years. Therefore, the aim of this study was to present a critical literature review comprising the period from 1966 to 2010. In addition, we discuss the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and subsequent treatment of a patient with a gingival calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor in the anterior mandible. This study shows that even though being an extremely rare neoplasm the gingival calcifyin…

Inflammatory and tumor-like lesions of the pancreas

2020

Summary Inflammatory/tumor-like lesions of the pancreas represent a heterogeneous group of diseases that can variably involve the pancreatic gland determining different signs and symptoms. In the category of inflammatory/tumor-like lesions of the pancreas, the most important entities are represented by chronic pancreatitis, which includes alcoholic, obstructive and hereditary pancreatitis, paraduodenal (groove) pancreatitis, autoimmune pancreatitis, lymphoepithelial cyst, pancreatic hamartoma and intrapancreatic accessory spleen. An in-depth knowledge of such diseases is essential, since they can cause severe morbidity and may represent a potential life-threatening risk for patients. Furthe…

Die Rosai-Dorfman-Lymphadenopathie, eine seltene reaktive lymphoproliferative Erkrankung

2008

Aim The established criteria for benignity or malignancy of lymph nodes when evaluated with B-mode ultrasound can be divided into quantitative measures (size, quantity, contour and density) and qualitative parameters (configuration and structure). The validity of these criteria is controversial. Methods Two cases of sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (SHML) are presented; this is a rare benign reactive disorder in which massive enlargement of cervical lymph nodes often occurs. These enlarged nodes offer a chance to demonstrate and discuss the validity of the sonomorphological criteria. Results The enlarged lymph nodes in SHML fulfill most of the criteria for malignancy. The sa…

Fibro-osseous lesion of maxilla. Report of two cases in a family with review of literature

2011

Fibrous dysplasia is a disturbance of bone metabolism that is classified as a benign fibro-osseous lesion. Fibrous connective tissue containing abnormal bone, replaces normal bone. The etiology of fibrous dysplasia is unknown. The radiographic appearance of the irregularly shaped trabeculae aids in the differential diagnosis. Occurring most commonly in the second decade of life, the lesions of fibrous dysplasia can be surgically recontoured for esthetic or functional purposes once they become dormant.

Pancreatitis autoinmune: pseudotumor inflamatorio, afectación multifocal, hipertensión portal y evolución a largo plazo

2008

Autoimmune pancreatitis is a recently characterized disease that still constitutes a diagnostic challenge, especially regarding differential diagnosis from neoplasia. Long-term outcome is poorly known. We herein report a case of a patient with autoimmune pancreatitis and 14 years of follow-up, and show its clinical, biochemical, and morphological characteristics. A 54-year-old female presented with obstructive jaundice and abdominal tenderness, as well as a mass at the pancreatic head on a CT scan, suggestive of pancreatic neoplasia. Surgery showed an increase of the whole pancreas, malignancy was intraoperatively ruled out, and a cholecystectomy and choledochoduodenostomy were carried out.…

Ameoblastic carcinoma of mandible - A rare case report with review of literature

2010

Ameloblastic carcinoma is a rare malignant lesion with characteristic histologic features and behavior that dictates more aggressive surgical approach than that of a simple ameloblastoma. However, reliable evidence of its biologic activity is currently unavailable due to the scarcity of well-documented cases. It occurs primarily in the mandible in a wide range of age groups; no sex or race predilection has been noted. It may present as a cystic lesion with benign clinical features or as a large tissue mass with ulceration, significant bone resorption and tooth mobility. Because the lesion is usually found unexpectedly after an incisional biopsy or the removal of a cyst, a guide to different…

Radial Scar Versus Tubular Carcinoma of the Breast

1995

Summary The present study is focused on the differential diagnosis between radial scar (RS) and tubular carcinoma (TC) using morphometrical and cytophotometrical analysis (static and flow cytometry) of a number of histologically well-established RS cases, (17 lesions) compared with 6 early infiltrating small TC with sclerotic stroma and pseudo-RS fields. One case displayed both RS and TC foci in contiguity. Mean nuclear area was larger in the group of tubular carcinomas (51.0 μ 2 ) than in the cases o f radial sclerosis (38.30 μ 2 ). We also found a larger number of aneuploid cases in tubular carcinomas measured by image cytometry, but both types o f lesions were diploid when measured by fl…

Giant cell granuloma of the maxilla. Global management, review of literature and case report.

2012

Giant cell granuloma is a relatively rare benign entity but can be locally aggressive. Histologically characterized by intense proliferation of multinucleated giant cells and fibroblasts. Affects bone supported tissues. Definitive diagnosis is given by biopsy. Clinically manifest as a mass or nodule of reddish color and fleshy, occasionally ulcerated surface. They can range from asymptomatic to destructive lesions that grow quickly. It is a lesion to be considered in the differential diagnosis of osteolytic lesions affecting the maxilla or jaw. Its management passed from conservative treatment with intralesional infiltration of corticosteroids, calcitonin or interferon, to the surgical rese…

Die Milzszintigraphie als Methode zur funktionellen Milzanalyse

1970

1. Percussion and palpation are only a superficial and subjective measure for the determination of a splenic tumor. Comparative scintigraphic and clinical investigations in more than 4,000 patients have shown that about 50% of spleens weighing between 600 and 750 g are not palpable. Considering the widespread use of radioisotope scanning it seems justified to claim that the size of the spleen during clinical investigation should be determined by a scan. In scientific problems one has to insist on the use of this method in any case. 2. Depending on the fact that until now no functional test for the spleen is available, it is of great importance that it is now possible to carry out a highly a…

Das basaloide Plattenepithelkarzinom (BSC) der Mundschleimhaut

1997

The basaloid-squamous carcinoma (BSC) that was first described in 1986 by Wain et al. for the head and neck region is a rare distinct variant of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The cardinal histopathologic feature is a biphasic cellular pattern of basaloid and squamous components. BSC has been confused with solid adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC). Although the number of reported cases is small, BSC appears biologically virulent, with a propensity to aggressive local behavior, early regional and distant metastasis, and subsequent poor survival. We report the clinicopathological characteristics of 4 new cases and compare their immunohistochemical features with those of solid ACC and conventional …
