Twin studies reveal shared genetic variance between liabilities to eating disorders and substance use, with the strongest associations between symptoms of bulimia nervosa (BN) and problem alcohol use (genetic correlation [rg], twin-based=0.23-0.53). Our aim was to revisit, in a Brazilian population, single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the MT gene family previously associated with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Competitive Equilibrium theory has been a widely accepted and extensively used cornerstone in economics for over a century. Here, we suggest a complementary model—motivated by the haggling in a bazaar—that offers a useful, first-principle account of market behavior that better accounts for the observed outcomes in forty market experiments. The Bazaar model uses simple stochastic processes to drive the matching of traders and the determination of price. We show that as agents become more impatient, the system tends toward more Competitive-Equilibrium-like outcomes.

Alcohol dependence (AD) is an important contributory factor to the global burden of disease. The etiology of AD involves both environmental and genetic factors, and the disorder has a heritability of around 50%. The aim of the present study was to identify susceptibility genes for AD by performing a genome-wide association study (GWAS). The sample comprised 1333 male in-patients with severe AD according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition, and 2168 controls.
