Dispersion of magnetic susceptibility in a suspension of flexible ferromagnetic rods

Abstract The properties of suspensions of magnetosomes extracted from magnetotactic bacteria are investigated. By using dynamic light scattering and measuring the dispersion of magnetic susceptibility it is shown that sonicated samples with broken magnetosome chains have qualitatively different behavior in comparison with native samples. This is explained by the presence of flexible chains of magnetosomes in non-sonicated samples which have the qualitative features of magnetic susceptibility predicted by the model of flexible magnetic rods.

Diffusion Measurements on Crystalline Rock Matrix

AbstractA new gas flow technique is introduced such that experiments on very long samples are possible. This new technique together with increased accuracy of the measurements, allows the observation of power law tails in the break-through curves. Dispersion in these experiments can be controlled in great detail, and therefore the power law tails can be used to determine very accurately the parameters relevant in matrix diffusion. Dispersion induced effects of high-order optical sidebands in the performance of millimeter-wave fiber-optic links

In this paper, chirped fiber Bragg gratings (CFBGs) are proposed as signal-phase controllers for microwave-photonic wireless downstream fiber links. The effect of high-order modulation optical sidebands that disturbs the output mm-wave signal due to the chromatic dispersion induced by the gratings is studied theoretically and experimentally. The 1st and 2nd mm-wave harmonics of the output signal have been measured for conventional intensity modulation and for intensity modulation with optical carrier suppression. In the last case, data transmission at 2.5 Gb/s is demonstrated through a chirped grating of 280 ps/nm dispersion in a 40-GHz modulated link.

Extremely efficient evaluation of chromatic dispersion in realistic photonic crystal fibers

We present a fast and accurate procedure for the evaluation of chromatic dispersion in photonic crystal fibers. It combines an iterative Fourier technique to compute the propagation constant at any fixed wavelength and an analytical approach to calculate its derivatives.

Strong coupling between surface plasmon polaritons and Sulforhodamine 101 dye

We demonstrate a strong coupling between surface plasmon polaritons and Sulforhodamine 101 dye molecules. Dispersion curves for surface plasmon polaritons on samples with a thin layer of silver covered with Sulforhodamine 101 molecules embedded in SU-8 polymer are obtained experimentally by reflectometry measurements and compared to the dispersion of samples without molecules. Clear Rabi splittings, with energies up to 360 and 190 meV, are observed at the positions of the dye absorption maxima. The split energies are dependent on the number of Sulforhodamine 101 molecules involved in the coupling process. Impact of the inclusion of hydrotalcite on the morphological and electrical characteristics of an epoxy-based CNT nanocomposite

The experimental results concerning the correlation between morphological and electrical characteristics of a MWCNT/epoxy based composites are presented. The impact of a nanoclay filler is investigated on the DC conductivity of a matrix loaded with different concentrations of MWCNT in order to evaluate the improvements on the dispersion of CNT inside the epoxy matrix. The dispersion is deemed to be very influencing on the electrical conductivity of the nanocomposite. A detailed morphological and structural characterization allows to interpret the electrical behaviour of the nanocomposites. © 2012 IEEE.

Novel non-destructive evaluation technique for the detection of poor dispersion of carbon nanotubes in nanocomposites

Abstract A wide use of advanced carbon nanotube polymer composites can be boosted by new non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques that can test the quality of the products to ensure that their specifications are met. It is well known in literature that the parameter that far more than others can affect the enhancing capabilities of the carbon nanotubes is their dispersion. Here we have presented a novel NDE technique based on infrared thermography able to evaluate the dispersion of the added nanoparticles in polymer nanocomposites. Preparation and characterization of polyamide 6/polyethylene blend-clay nanocomposites in the presence of compatibilisers and stabilizing system

Abstract Several compatibilising systems were added to high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polyamide 6 (PA6) blends in the presence of an organically modified montmorillonite (OMM). All the blends were prepared by using a co-rotating twin-screw extruder and characterized by SEM, TEM and XRD analyses. In addition, the rheological behaviour and the mechanical properties – tensile and impact – were evaluated. The presence of OMM affects the dimensions of the polymeric phases in the blend but not their mutual adhesion, granted only by the compatibilisers.
