Oleuropein ameliorates acute colitis in mice.

2011

Oleuropein, the major secoiridoid in olive tree leaves, possesses a wide range of health promoting properties. It has recently been shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory activity. We have evaluated the effect of oleuropein on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced experimental colitis in mice in order to provide insight into its mechanisms of action. Oral administration of oleuropein notably attenuated the extent and severity of acute colitis while reducing neutrophil infiltration; production of NO, IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α; expression of iNOS, COX-2, and MMP-9; and the translocation of the NF-κB p65 subunit to the nucleus in colon tissue. In LPS-stimulated peritoneal macrophages, the oleuropein m…

Anisakid Nematodes and Potential Risk of Human Anisakiasis through the Consumption of Hake, Merluccius spp., Sold Fresh in Spanish Supermarkets

2022

Nematode parasite species belonging to the Anisakis simplex complex are the most important cause of human anisakiasis through the consumption of (mainly) undercooked, previously not frozen, or conveniently treated fish. In Spain, the consumption of hake has been recognized as an important source of this parasitosis. With the aim of shedding light on the risk factors that can influence the potential risk of human anisakiasis in Spain through the consumption of fresh hake sold by nationwide supermarket chains, a total of 536 small hake specimens belonging to the species Merluccius bilinearis caught off the Northeast American coasts and Merluccius merluccius caught in the Northeast Atlantic an…

Structures of Alkaloid Biosynthetic Glucosidases Decode Substrate Specificity

2011

Two similar enzymes with different biosynthetic function in one species have evolved to catalyze two distinct reactions. X-ray structures of both enzymes help reveal their most important differences. The Rauvolfia alkaloid biosynthetic network harbors two O-glucosidases: raucaffricine glucosidase (RG), which hydrolyses raucaffricine to an intermediate downstream in the ajmaline pathway, and strictosidine glucosidase (SG), which operates upstream. RG converts strictosidine, the substrate of SG, but SG does not accept raucaffricine. Now elucidation of crystal structures of RG, inactive RG-E186Q mutant, and its complexes with ligands dihydro-raucaffricine and secologanin reveals that it is the…

Nomenclatural changes in Apteranthes Mikan (Asclepiadoideae, Apocynaceae)

2006

Inversion Formulas for the Discretized Hilbert Transform on the Unit Circle

1998

A discrete version of the Hilbert transform on the unit circle is considered. Its Moore--Penrose inverse with respect to suitable scalar products is derived for different side conditions. Furthermore, stability of the pseudo-inverse is studied. These results allow the efficient computation of approximate solutions of singular integral equations with Hilbert kernel. Furthermore, the stability analysis of such methods becomes much easier even for graded meshes which are useful for weakly singular solutions.

Effect of storage on quality parameters and phenolic content of Italian extra-virgin olive oils

2019

The quality of extra virgin olive oils is affected mainly by hydrolytic and oxidative reactions. The present paper investigated the changes of major and minor components and oxidation indices of three monovarietal extra virgin olive oils after 18 months of storage at room temperature and in dark glass bottles conditions. After storage, the basic quality parameters such as free acidity, peroxide values, extinction coefficients, fatty acids composition, chlorophyll and carotenoid content, did not exceed the upper limits set by European Community Regulations for extra-virgin olive oils. Given the importance of the phenolic fraction, UHPLC-HESI-MS metodology was used. A decrease in 3,4-DHPEA-ED…

Frequency, Risk-Factors and Survival of Children With Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumors (AT/RT) of the CNS Diagnosed between 1988 and 2004, and Regis…

2011

Purpose To analyze the frequency, prognostic factors, and outcome of children with atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors (AT/RT), a rare and highly malignant embryonal brain tumor. Materials and Methods Clinical data of patients diagnosed between 1988 and 2004 with AT/RT who were registered to the German HIT trial center, were correlated with outcome. Patient numbers for AT/RT were compared to numbers for primitive neuroectodermal tumors and medulloblastomas (PNET/MB) registered to the population-based HIT trials. Results We identified 56 patients with the centrally confirmed histopathological diagnosis of AT/RT with a median age of 1.2 years (range, 0.1–14.0 years). The AT/RT:PNET/MB ratio was…

Generalized inverses and similarity to partial isometries

2010

Abstract We obtain some results related to the problems of Badea and Mbekhta (2005) [1] concerning the similarity to partial isometries using the generalized inverses. Especially, we involve the Moore–Penrose inverses. Also a characterization for such a similarity is given in the terms of dilations similar to unitary operators, which leads to a new criterion for the similarity to an isometry and to a quasinormal partial isometry.
