Structure, ferroelasticity and Goldilocks zone phase transitions in C3H5N2Al(SO4)2·6H2O

The single crystal growth and sequence of reversible phase transition are described for C3H5N2Al(SO4)2·6H2O. Thermal and structural analyses combined with dielectric studies and optical observations revealed the structural phase transition at T 1 = 339/340 K (I↔II) and T 2 = 347/348 K (II↔III) on heating and cooling, respectively. Both phase transitions are of the first-order type. The symmetry changes from monoclinic to trigonal phase. At 293 K, the large crystals are usually divided into numerous domains of the ferroelastic type that disappear above T 1 on heating and reappear below T 1 on cooling. Inhibitory GABA(A) receptors are regulated by numerous allosteric modulators, the most receptor-subtype specific of which is furosemide. It recognises receptors of the subunit composition alpha6beta2/3gamma2, restricted to cerebellar granule cells. To locate furosemide's site of action we constructed chimeras of the furosemide-sensitive alpha6 and the furosemide-insensitive alpha1 subunit, and expressed and studied them together with the beta3 and gamma2 subunits in Xenopus oocytes by the two-electrode voltage clamp technique. The inhibition of GABA-induced currents by furosemide mainly depended on a short domain proximal to the first transmembrane region of the alpha6 subunit.

1 Both in mammalian tissues and in transfected cells, only low levels of α1D-adrenoceptors are detected in radioligand binding studies. It has been implicated that the comparatively long N-terminal tail of the α1D-adrenoceptor is responsible for the inefficient surface expression of the receptor. 2 In the present study, we created gene constructs for six N-terminally truncated variants of the human α1D-adrenoceptor. Abstract The paraelectric ⇌ antiferroelectric phase transition of the compound Bi 2 Ti 4 O 11 is studied in situ by electron diffraction and electron microscopy. The transition is reversible and clearly second order. Above T c faint streaking at the superlattice positions persists. In the low-temperature phase, antiphase boundaries with a displacement vector R = 1/2[101] are revealed; they show a finite width, suggesting a gradual displacement of the Bi atoms at the transition. A model for the domain wall configuration is proposed, based on the influence of the lone pairs of Bi 3+ ions at the transition.
Mechanisms for the Dynamics of Phase Transformations

An introductory review of the dynamics of (first- order) phase transitions is given. Concepts describing the initial stages of the transition, such as nucleation, spinodal decomposition (in the case of unmixing) are introduced, and their validity is critically discussed. The theoretical results are compared to recent computer simulations and pertinent experiments. Then the scaling concepts describing the late stages of domain growth are discussed, and open problems are outlined.
Some nonlinear properties of ferroelectric smart materials

Four types of nonlinear properties of ferroelectric smart materials have been considered: nonlinear dynamics of the paraelectric–ferroelectric interphase boundaries, nonlinear equilibrium excitations}domain walls, nonlinear response of the domain structure near the first-order phase transition}wetting of domain walls}andnonlinear effects causedby external high magnetic fields. Control of the Magnetic Configuration of Ferromagnetic Nanostructures Across the Structural Phase Transition of Vanadium Dioxide

We investigate the effect of the structural phase transition in VO 2 in magnetoelastically coupled heterostructures of VO 2 and Ni. Continuous and nano-patterned Ni layers were used, and we found reversible and reproducible magnetic domain switching induced by the VO 2 structural phase transition. The magnetic states of the nano-patterned ferromagnetic elements were dominated by topographic features which generated strong pinning but still allowed for a reversible switching between the states. Nucleation and Collapse of the Superconducting Phase in Type-I Superconducting Films

The phase transition between the intermediate and normal states in type-I superconducting films is investigated using magneto-optical imaging. Magnetic hysteresis with different transition fields for collapse and nucleation of superconducting domains is found. This is accompanied by topological hysteresis characterized by the collapse of circular domains and the appearance of lamellar domains. Magnetic hysteresis is shown to arise from supercooled and superheated states. Domain-shape instability resulting from long-range magnetic interaction accounts well for topological hysteresis. Connection with similar effects in systems with long-range magnetic interactions is emphasized.
